It's ok, when you wreck your econobox at 130mph when the brakes fail I'm pretty sure we're gonna end up in the same place.

But when you crash your bike into another car at 40 miles per hour...you will be in a very different place than I would when I crash my car into another car at 40 miles per hour.

Why would he crash his bike into another car at any speed?

It's kind of hard to crash into cars when they are so far behind you. :D

I've seen that before. Another completely avoidable accident...and proof that stupidity kills.

I do love bikes, problem is I love to go fast. I think a ZX-10 would be my ideal bike, I hear the new ones are awesome. I just think I'll be going 180 mph down the highway one day and hit a hummingbird and disentegrate into dust. That or just fall off and skid to my death....

Please don't get a literbike as a first bike and screw up motorcycle statistics even more.

Anyway, it bugs me that people drive their 300hp+ nice cars at 60mph just cruising in the middle or right lane of a highway. Spirited driving is my favorite term. Don't care about 0-60 jackrabbits or quarter miles in the real world.

Why does it bug you? You realize they are bigger targets for tickets and usually have a rougher suspension/lowered so going fast equals REALLY rough ride or you fuck up your car if the freeway is all chopped up.

I didn't realize so many people took their cars to the track.

I wholeheartedly agree with this, but have never heard anyone else on this forum express the same sentiments.

Winding out an old Volvo up through the gears is WAY more fun than merely stomping on your AMG's exquisitely crafted Teutonic accelerator whilst the 6/7 speed automatic and host of electronic assists silently do your bidding.

You seeing a sports car going slow as you fly by on the highway at 80mph doesn't necessarily mean that they never ever push their car.

I don't think people that are paying insurance and such for these cars are going to be whomping on their gas pedals all the way home because they bought a "fast" car. Might as well be mad at all of the people with SUVs who never take them off the asphalt.

Yes and no. There is something very alluring to driving a car that quite literally never has to work hard at all on the street. I think that Peter Egan said it best,

"...fast cars and motorcycles are like the operatic tenors of the road. Pavarotti and Domingo don't have to hit a high C every time they open their mouths, but it's nice to know they can. The point is, if you are able to sing "Nessun dorma" competently at La Scala, it probably means you can also sing "I Got You, Babe" in the shower with almost no effort at all.

Likewise, a bike that can go 176 on a dry lake bed in California can also be counted upon to pass a gravel truck or a motorhome at normal highway speeds without too much suspense. also, it just feels good when you twist that grip, even at 35 mph. And the pipes are always there, waiting to sing that high C."

I'm not saying that it's not fun to drive a slow car fast. After all, my little 'teener is very, very far from "fast" and it's a hoot. It's just a different kind of fun. :)

ZV's post FTW! The LS V8 feels nice but it's definitely not as hair raising as trying to do 110mph in a Cavvy :p

and to the guy with the 12 second motorcycle, no one does give a shit about that. for comparison sake, you have a SLOW bike because my car would outrun you easily. maybe you could brag if you said you gsxr1000 was fast or something.

That's exactly my point. I made a general statement in regards to the whole vTec fad and everyone took it out of context. O-well, i'll work on dislodging my foot from my mouth and think more about my replies before hitting submit next time.

Very true :)

Both of those riders should really have slowed before they got close to the car. That accident was completely avoidable.

I completely agree with both of you...but don't know if this really applies to the question that the OP is asking...it actually almost points out the phenomenon that the OP is referring to. There are cars (like the VW GTI for instance) where the owners tend to drive very aggressively, ramming through the gears at high revs and drive quickly around town. The fact of the matter is that the car is actually not that fast relative to what is available today. But the owners feel like it is fast and drive it like it's a supercar. They think it is "fast"...but really it is not.

Whereas when you put your foot down on the accelerator of a ZR-1...you know that puppy is fast...and it is.

Hold on, because some of the young crowd at AT brings it to the track that means the 30-somethings in their BMW 335s / 6s, Infinitis, Lexus', all cruising along at 60 on the highway all bring it to the track to make use of their sweet rides too? I don't think so... what I'm saying is they've got nice cars that they are wasting away on an everyday basis and I just shake my head passing them wondering what the point is. If they wanted a nice cruiser, surely they could've gotten a Cadillac - not that that's slow either.

About the SUV comment... and I'm really tired of pointing this out to short-sighted people - (btw Jules I'm still waiting for an answer) they are made to be practical (except for gas - sometimes) at every situation. Driving in snow with ease for one... home depot trips for another. You don't buy a house long-term to fit the minimum amount of people, right? SUVs have the benefit of practicality at any time. They don't have to be off-roaders and for many crossovers they are not. But still, they have the cargo capacity compared to a passenger vehicle whether it be fold down rear seats, 3rd row, or roof racks. NOBODY complains when a minivan is not carrying 3 kids, or a pickup has no cargo on the bed, why are SUVs getting knocked?

What're the 335s or 6s cruising along with Prius's doing if they're not being driven aggressively? They are meant to be fun drivers and have no other practical purpose. This is what bugs me when I see such sweet vehicles wasted and that's all I'm saying.
