Well fuck, take Pink Floyd out of that list then, because a lot of their hits are in the 80's and even 90's.

Give me a break. Nobody ever heard of Smashing Pumpkins until Siamese Dream (1993). Nobody ever heard of Pearl Jam until 10 (1991). Those aren't '80s bands, they are bands formed in the 1980's that became BANDS in the 1990's.

The Wall was released in 79. That is the last album of "great Pink Floyd"--the last of "the big four," which would ignore the great stuff released prior to Dark Side (73--though they had been touring with it as early as 71).

The Final Cut...pretty much sucked. Momentary Lapse of Reason had 1-2 very good songs, but at this point...is it really Pink Floyd? Many would say that it isn't.

...that being said, I wouldn't even consider them Classic Rock for several reasons. They are more Prog Rock, or even Psychedelic, depending on the PF era, but that is really splitting hairs, as they were a major force in the middle of what the Stones and Cream and Zeppelin and The Who and CCR and The Allmans, et al were doing in those days. 4/4 time wasn't really their gas, I guess.

It was tongue in cheeks, but anyways. The show must go on even though they lost a member, and arguably, the later releases were legendary in their own rights.

So, you should specify what qualifies as "classic rocks" in your OP then. Because oldies stations are playing 80's and early 90's songs, then you realized it's been at least 3 decades since...

But, I'm a bit confused, because in your OP you have Bon Jovi, GnR, Journey, etc...

Yeah, damn. I think I officially dated myself as an old bastard. Shoot. Pearl Jam and Smashing Pumpkins are still "newish" to me. lol.

This is not about what year a band started, it's about what music the band is releasing in that era.

- Pink Floyd is IN because of their 70's work (Animals, DSotM, live in pompeii stuff), not because of their 80's stuff (The Wall is my least favorite mainstream PF album), and I'm not even going to talk about their 90's stuff
- RHCP in the 80's is OUT, I get that it's towards the tail end of the classic rock era, but it's most certainly not the sound I attribute towards classic rock. Which leads me to...
- STP / NIN / RHCP / Smashing Pumpkins / Primus - all started in the 80's, all of which I would solidly call 90's bands. Nobody gave a fuck about "Freaky Styley"

I feel cheated for sticking to the rules. 90% (exaggerated) of the suggestions here aren't classic rock.
OP, start a new thread with a less specific title.

I think the list and playlist I have in this thread solidly embodies classic rock (except maybe the 90's santana stuff). I'm sure as hell not adding NIN to my classic rock playlist.

see:
My era is late 60's to late 80's WITH THAT CLASSIC ROCK VIBE

so late 80's AC/DC would be YES, late 80's RHCP would be NO.

Buck up hombre. NIN used to be alternative in the 80s and early 90s. It's classic rock now. Deal with it.

^give him credit. I *think* NS1 is a NIN homer, and he's doing what he can to eliminate them from the list.

good on him.

and, really, it's not like they stop being alternative just because "time." Those are their own genres.

deal with it

too much metal! D:

There's no such thing!

And no such list is complete without the gentle tones of Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Drifter, Slayer, Sepultura, and many of such other golden oldies. You could even consider including some of the earlier albums by Metallica.

It's classic rock.

/= metal. deal with it.

(I think this is why serious metal heads hate Zepplin, right?...because of the horrible insinuation that they should be considered Metal, but are never as great as...fuck I don't know, Sepultombera or some dumb shit? amirite?...even though they are always, and will always be better than all bands in the history of metal could ever be, despite the genres?--that's a fact, you know)

This is actually the thing I like about the genre Ns1 is looking for. You can have some hard rock bands that made some really good classic rock songs. Ozzie comes to mind with Crazy Train. Its much more about the song than the group.

The problem with it is that you could probably have 150 groups/artists but only get 250 songs. And to get those songs, you have to listen to some really shit music to filter.

If you move Queen to your Yes list I would suggest some of their older stuff, prior to A Night At The Opera; the rawness of their early albums make great additions to playlists. The "hits" are good but encompass very little of the variety of the band.

My own selections:
Moody Blues
Yes
Johnny Winter
Mountain
Genesis (with & without Peter Gabriel)
Deep Purple
Black Sabbath
Styx
Robin Trower
