oh how i love the reminiscing about the days of old.

people with lives don't have to reflect on the glory days of a message board. they have actual memories from real-life events, people, and places.

you keep being proud of everything you have witnessed unfold from your keyboard there poncho.

Which, by your own logic, makes YOU even more pathetic that you're here posting and complaining about shit you didn't even experience from the keyboard you may or may not have.

But, HEY, keep flapping your gums and whining, little bozo boy, we're ALL mightily impressed.
who's complaining and whining? this is entertainment for me, not my life, Mr. Elite Senior Mod :)

I still cherish your PM asking for my address so you could come to my place and beat me up. You're a loose cannon. Get a grip, Perky.

You issued the challenge that you could beat me up. I was simply calling your faggy little blowhard bluff.

And, oh, look, months later, you're still whining about it because it's all you've got.

Face it, you're a cum stain on the trousers of the internet, except that trousers can be washed. There's no cure for you, no magic Tide "now with extra anti-melty". Stupid is bred in the bone.

You bring nothing to the table, have nothing, exhibit nothing, and add nothing but the yip-yap annoyance of your punk-mouthed little whines.

No wonder all you can do here is post out of jealousy and spite, about something that doesn't even concern you, but about which you obviously care deeply enough to post and post, taking your piss-ant snipe shots, all the while trying to claim you don't care -- it's all you have going on in your pathetic little life.

It must really, really SUCK to be you.

Awesome :) I'm glad it worked out for her.

what do you expect? everyone has to have a skill of some sort in this life.

my reply to Perk was via PM, just letting him know, between us, how utterly wrong he is about me. i do have a life... and it exists outside of the intertubes.

Yup. Perk's assessment of Melty is funny, but not accurate at all (which is pretty typical of Perk's flaming ;))

You have that completely and utterly bass-ackwards. Back in the day, there was a FAR higher percentage of FAR more mature posters who were a) knowledgeable about hardware and b) had attention spans longer than that of a gnat.

Despite the many now here with "college degrees", the quality of the average poster these days has plummeted beyond belief. That tells me a lot about the worth of an average college degree these days, btw.

That's not to say that there aren't still a fair number of high quality posters, but, back in the day, AT was a serious hardware site that just happened to develop a side OT forum. We banned AOL addys, fer Chrissake, just to keep the brainless and immature out.

Nowadays, much of our new membership comes from the very same brainless and disposable culture demographic that would have all been AOL members back in the day, except today these same dumbo kiddies are covered in a thin veneer of high tech knowledge, simply because it's reached all the way through our current popular culture.

Back in the day, our members were a pioneering elite of the hardware savvy in an idiot world. These days, we are just another stop on the fail train FOR the idiot world.

Don't believe me? Just look at this thread! This is about unique AT history, that reached outside of AT and broke through into the wider world. And yet, look at the one brain celled IDIOTS who not only lack the intellectual curiosity AND the necessary two minute attention span to read an interesting post BUT take the time out of their busy and important lives to post TL;DR as if this were some sign of their coolness and NOT a sad admission that they're freaking mouth breathers.

They are not only sub 80 IQ ignorant, but so firmly and utterly encased in their ignorance that they proudly post it.

Yeah, AT has changed.

QFMFT!

Well worded.

I too welcome back Dennil.

Life move on.
Actually the Floster was a Mod himself at the time and people were pissed because many were heartbroken over the alleged demise of NWM and her child. Things have changed significantly, now days most doubt anything like the story Flossie contrived but back then we weren't so jaded. In looking back with the attitude most of us have about the Internet and this silly forum yeah I can see how people would think it was funny but back then we took people on the Internet like we take them in real life. Of course as the Interent and these forums get longer in the tooth the more ridiculous they become. Of course that also goes hand in hand with a generation who've grownup on the Internet. Shit anybody posting a YAGT thread would have been laughed off the forum, now it's one of the most popular type of threads. It's like the demise of Western Civilization:shocked::laugh:

I was asked and I have no clue. How were the original mods chosen? I always wondered what happened if a mod quit back in the super secret days. They would know who the other mods were and could out them...right?

Unlocked after a Mod edit. The full feel of the original thread/post is no longer intact.

What's missing?

Dunno; the OP was edited. Actually, there's nothing missing from the OP that wasn't "added back" by the replies to the OP. The point is that even the "New ATOT" is not new by any means.

Verboten posts (porn, morbidity, war3z) aside, posts here are still edited for content based on the whims/emotions/moral dipstick of the mods. AT is the CNN of Message Boards.

Exactly! Thanks for quantifying that for me Perk. Those are the exact reasons I almost never post anymore. Theres rarely anything intelligent worth responding to these days.

Concerning Wombatwoman. I think she left for similar reasons. Being sick was just a convenient excuse.

Thanks for the OP Reitz. This has been an interesting trip down memory lane. My opinion about the whole thing was that it wasn't that big a deal. I was taken in just like everyone else. When the truth came out I would have to say only one word could describe what I thought of it. Masterful Simply Masterful. I laughed til I cried. I could never understand the moderators reaction to it but honestly I've had difficulty understanding their reactions to many things over the years. Still I thought their handling of it was actually more out of hand than the act itself.

In any case was nice to reminisce about days when there was still interesting conversation and stimulating discussion to be found here.

OK. It took sifting through a lot of CDs from that time but I have most of the relevant material relating to this sordid affair: pics, emails, forum posts, pictures, I even have Nowhereman's Nowheremom memorial page saved. I was such an internat pack rat back then. I think only Ornery (I do miss the old ah heck) was worse when it came to archiving AnandTech. What I am missing most are my private messages. The reason for this is that they seemingly were quickly deleted by someone when my account got banned on May 19th 2001. I had saved a few hundred of my PMs from time to time but thousands were lost. Still, I don't think that there were many that dealt with the incident in a significant manner. Most were private messages between me and WombatWoman. I tended to discuss Nowheremom via email and I have all of those still in my inbox.

I am too emotionally drained to keep on reading this stuff tonight. It's like reliving it all over again and feeling waves of shame and guilt washing over me. However, I think it's important that I reread my exact words because memories can become altered or embellished after nearly a decade and I want what I'll post to be an accurate representation of the truth.

So I'll probably write a narrative of the events tomorrow night or the day after. You see, there are a few things I need to do in that pesky real life.

I do not plan to repost Lily Marlene's death story. That would not bring much to the table in my opinion and might inflame matters. In the meantime, you can read my confession of May 18, 2001.

nowheremom: my confession

I come here today to reveal that I have deceived this community and deceived myself into believing that I was doing the right thing.

I am revealing this now because some people came to my defense without knowing that they were defending a lie.

I am revealing this now because the people who uncovered the truth will not let the matter die and this forces people to take sides, threatening to uncover the fabric of our community.

I am revealing this now because it was never my intention to harm anyone or have anyone harmed in my name.

In October 1999, I created a cyberpersona called NOWHEREMOM partly out of elements from real people I had encountered, partly out of my imagination. I started this simply as a joke and to see what it would feel like for a woman to post on the forums. Women were really scarce on the forums at that time and, as time went by, I deluded myself into thinking that this portrayal of a strong woman would help others be less afraid of the overwhelming male presence and what I perceived as strong misogyny on the boards. NOWHEREMOM was hit on instantly by a couple of male posters in emails, so I decided to make her flirt with me to prevent this by having us be a declared couple. These male posters need not be afraid. They were just making innocent first contact and I was not about to pull a Thunderbooty on them. Their identity is and will remain secret.

Throughout November and December 1999, I engaged in a banter with this persona. At that time, I wanted mainly to bring some humour and entertainment to the forums. People were indeed entertained and some called it a soap opera. As time went by, NOWHEREMOM started to take an air of reality even to me. Once again, it never was my intention to hurt anyone. I simply had not realized how much people and even myself had become attached to her.

In early January 2000, after Ornery mentioned the word 'marriage', one day I simply panicked and in that instant, my mind was clouded enough that, instead of simply revealing that it was a hoax, I killed her.

I had never expected the grief that overcame this community. It even overcame me and I sobbed for three days as if she had been real. I even mourned for 6 months before I let myself court WombatWoman. On April 29th, Yucky posted a thread entitled "Has everyone forgotten about dennilfloss' tragic loss?" and the reaction of many who posted in that thread convinced me that they did not want to be reminded of her demise. That thread was in my Favorites and I read it several times in the next months. I came to the conclusion that to reveal the hoax would hurt too many innocent people and I was hoping that the whole thing would simply fade away. It was not meant to be.

In July 2000, a member named vapor uncovered evidence of the hoax and revealed it to a few people. Instead of coming clean, still believing that the hurt to our community would be too great, I denied the whole thing. vapor was villified and ostracized for this. To him, I can only offer my sincere apology for I am truly sorry for the way he was treated on this matter. I lied to some people closest and dearest to me because I thought that, in doing so, I was protecting them from becoming accomplices in my cover-up. Unfortunately, many came to my defense in a spirited fashion and ended up unknowingly defending a lie. I thought that I could carry the guilt and the reproach on my lone shoulders but these friends ended up unwittingly carrying some because of my misjudgement. To all those who fought on my behalf, please accept my sincere apologies for having deceived you. There was no malice on my part and I truly thought that I was somehow protecting you by leaving you in the dark. I and only I am to blame.

The matter never rested and many of my friends and acquaintances ended up being divided into two clans. Some people who had other grudges against me never let the matter rest. So now we arrive at this point in time and I am not willing to see the community of AnandTech members divided into two clans, one of which would be defending a lie on my behalf. In particular, I know some outside individuals who would be pleased to no end watching the fabric of this community unravel over this.

To all the people close to me who defended me: please believe me when I say that I wanted to somehow protect you from this knowledge. I hope that you will find it in your heart to forgive me.

To all the members of AnandTech: please believe me when I say that I never wanted to hurt anyone and that I am truly sorry.

It was simply a hoax which I thought was harmless and which got out of hand when I panicked 16 months ago.

I sincerely apologize to everybody involved or hurt by this matter.

Denis Fillion

If, after rereading the material, I find that I need to correct or expand what I said then, I will do just that.

I have also found tons of pictures of members from 1999-2000 (e.g. Sailorette, Crysla, Dannylove, Yeenie, Happykitten, Entity, Isla, Narzy, Viper GTS, Windogg, Viedit and Visgf, NFS4, etc... I think that next weekend I'll post a monster memory thread with all those pics so people can see what the ATOT crowd looked like when there were just a few thousand registered members.

For the moment though, here is Russ bungie jumping around the turn of the century.

Wow, Russ looks like Freddy Mercury, Freddie Mercury is dead and Russ is gone... Coincidence? I think not.

I met Russ a few years ago at a Seattle meet up with HotChic, Brutuskend, and a few others. Russ is still kickin' (and still rockin the Freddy 'stache!) :p

I agree with pretty much everything you just expressed.

By the time the whole Dennilfloss thing happened I was already a veteran on the forum. In the early days of the forum it was much more technical and mature. I joined in 1997. In fact, if you go to the Wayback Machine and look up Anandtech's earliest forum archive from January 1998, you'll see that one of my posts is on there. Anand himself would frequently post and I saw him at Comdex (didn't talk to him, just thought it was neat that I saw him). I was working in my company's booth at the time.

In the early days I was all business and talked about computer equipment. After AT switched to the cartoonish layout of the forums and the idiots came in, I gave up and adopted my current role of forum asshole (hey, with Dennilfloss getting visited by aliens on a daily basis and Guy Under the Bridge "keeping it real" all the time, trying to have an intelligent discussion became impossible and it was much more fun to mess with people). I miss the old days.

Well, part of your sig sure hasn't changed since then. I posted that quote late one night as the Mean Mod. Funny thing is, most of the time the Fun Mod was me too, sometimes within the same thread. Guess that means I ate myself.:D
