this

She apparently got over her deathly-ill state. Last I heard she was hooked up to all kinds of machines because she'd lost intestines and other stuff. I'm not sure how she went from death-bed to Jeopardy, but apparently she got better  I never knew what she looked like, but she looks awfully young in the Jeopardy video. Not sure why she'd want to get involved with an ancient fossil like Dennis if she were so young :p

How many years ago was it that she was sick? I would think that after a couple years she would either recover or die. Just because she was "hooked up to all kinds of machines" at one point doesn't mean she has to stay like that for life.

When I decided to merge my car with a light pole, I was hooked up to all kinds of fancy machines. I definitely am not hooked up to them anymore and barely even have a scar where my forehead played cheese grater on my windshield.

Relax Nik...not everything is a scam. Even if this one is, who really cares?

Where did I say it was a scam?  Anyway, I just expected her to still be truckin' along like she used to. Just as it's not difficult to imagine someone 'recover or die,' it's not difficult to imagine someone with significant medical needs for decades. I was simply taken back by how grim her situation was when she personally explained it to me, then seeing her seemingly doing just fine last year or so. If that's really her, I'm glad she's recovered :)

Relax, NSFW...not all of my posts are paranoid conspiracy theories

the forums were much different back then also, people replied because they really had something to contribute to the thread, not because they are trying to hit senior/gold/diamond...whatever member. personally, at this rate, i'll be a lifer when i'm 50/60. anywho, thanks for the post, much appreciated.

The forums have changed a lot. Also consider that back then a large chunk of the people on AT were high schoolers. Now days most seem to be college or post-college. With the maturing of those in the field things just change. I know that for myself back when I joined (~1999/2000 even though my account shows 2001) I could damn near tell you the serial numbers of every part in my desktop. Now days I have to look up what components I even have.

Does this have anything to do with the 90s TV show starring Bruce Greenwood?

You have that completely and utterly bass-ackwards. Back in the day, there was a FAR higher percentage of FAR more mature posters who were a) knowledgeable about hardware and b) had attention spans longer than that of a gnat.

Despite the many now here with "college degrees", the quality of the average poster these days has plummeted beyond belief. That tells me a lot about the worth of an average college degree these days, btw.

That's not to say that there aren't still a fair number of high quality posters, but, back in the day, AT was a serious hardware site that just happened to develop a side OT forum. We banned AOL addys, fer Chrissake, just to keep the brainless and immature out.

Nowadays, much of our new membership comes from the very same brainless and disposable culture demographic that would have all been AOL members back in the day, except today these same dumbo kiddies are covered in a thin veneer of high tech knowledge, simply because it's reached all the way through our current popular culture.

Back in the day, our members were a pioneering elite of the hardware savvy in an idiot world. These days, we are just another stop on the fail train FOR the idiot world.

Don't believe me? Just look at this thread! This is about unique AT history, that reached outside of AT and broke through into the wider world. And yet, look at the one brain celled IDIOTS who not only lack the intellectual curiosity AND the necessary two minute attention span to read an interesting post BUT take the time out of their busy and important lives to post TL;DR as if this were some sign of their coolness and NOT a sad admission that they're freaking mouth breathers.

They are not only sub 80 IQ ignorant, but so firmly and utterly encased in their ignorance that they proudly post it.

Yeah, AT has changed.

yes the forums have changed..a lot.

but i disagree on that most were highschoolers. i think we had a pole at the time and the avarage age was like 30 (this was in 99/00 or so). At the time AT was a hard core hardware site.

now it seems we are filled with high school kids.

I found the OP an interesting read, and don't see the harm in telling the story (I was a lurker here, mostly in General Hardware and the Video Card forums at the time - I don't recall posting in ATOT until later). If people are too lazy (or drunk on Iron City!) to read the OP, it's their loss.

FWIW I find it hard to imagine anyone getting angry with Dennis now about this. I don't even see how he benefited from it - it's not as though there was a memorial fund. The whole thing seems a little sad but it's certainly not the crime of the (last) century.

What I've never understood...the guy perpetrated a beautiful hoax...and people got mad about it?

Fuck that. He should have been given accolades for his ingenuity!

Not only did he have everyone here believing his story, it crossed over into (somewhat) mainstream news.

I was only a lurker in those days, and didn't even know there was an OT....and didn't care. I was working way too many hours to care. I only stopped by to read up on topics that helped me with computer problems I had at the time...not for socializing. I don't remember if I even had an account before 2003...if I did, I lost all username and password info, and my email address didn't trigger an error when I registered in 03.

Dennilfloss pulled of a spectacular hoax...and everyone fell for it...for a while. He deserves our praise.

Yeah, AT has changed.

Odd, I thought more were high schoolers back then.

I think the changing of the post quality has a lot more to do with how IT has changed. IT used to be a geeky hobby. Now days it is a profession that you don't need to have an interest in in order to actually do it. A large chunk of those in the field are just complete idiots that can pass an A+ but can't necessarily troubleshoot to save their lives. At the end of the day they go home and stop thinking about technology. But regardless, the post quality has gone down. When I joined I rarely went into OT, and now days I probably venture out of OT once every few months.

I was under the impression that AOL addresses were banned (and, subsequently, all other popular free email sites) because some douchebag AOLer pulled a fast one in FS/FT and AOL refused to cooperate in identifying and aprehending the scumbag.

Yeah, that's a key part of the story, for sure, but the decision to ban any and all membership applications bearing an AOL addy was helped immeasurably by our feeling that we wouldn't much miss the entire lot of them -- that, as a group, they were far more trouble than they were worth.

But, yeah, Nik, when Harvey couldn't get even basic co-operation from the AOL admins re: FS/FT trolls, that was the kicker.

I don't see why this is even an issue. Everybody knows, nobody cares.

I have no idea why people like you think they speak for everyone. Some sort of ego problem. I also don't find the OP to be too long.

I didn't know any of the backstory and I found this a more interesting read than any post i've read tonight. It also prompted me to read up on a saga that I had heard referenced but never knew the full story of.

Those who've been around long enough to have been involved all know. Those too young to have been involved don't need to be involved. It's like this is part of the Anandtech Primer or some such right of passage to be able to post on AT.

It's more than eight years old, people. Let it go. Good grief.

Says the guy with a 2006 reg date

It is part of AT's history, and few of the newer members have any idea what happened. Dennis' 'Past Lifer' tag is unique, and a bit of history on it is always welcome.

And yes, Nik, this is my desk.

I posted in his original apology thread, noob. My old account is done.

Besides, that's just it. This is history. I was told years ago that one of the reasons the mods hadn't let Dennis back in yet was because they were afraid of additional drama and uproar about it. This isn't helping. Is he going to post another thread in 2015 too?

your attitude makes SO much more sense now, thanks for clearing that up.

Shit yeah, and I'll have another new account too! But I totally agree, let history be history, and never speak of anything that happened in the past again! That makes total and complete sense, so let's go with that!

Also, aren't multiple / secondary accounts a bad thing here? ;)

It's not a secret. In fact, Perknose himself was involved, so any insinuation you're trying to make you can shove up your ass :)

It's not so much talking about the past as it is rehashing shit that doesn't need to be rehashed. Now Dennis will probably have to deal with n00bs like you giving him a hard time over it and others who are too stubborn to let bygones be bygones start picking at old wounds. I'm not defending what he did, but I'm also not attacking him for it. Just leave it alone and move on.

Hey, I shove many things up my ass, but insinuations, especially regarding posters such as Perknose?!? I mean, just look at the name.... Perknose. Does that sound like it would slide smoothly up one's rectum? I think not!

I just think you're blowing it out of proportion.

My initial post wasn't. The conversation has degraded. My first post is what it is and I would have gladly left it at that.

lol you leaving something alone? yeah right.

who's complaining and whining? this is entertainment for me, not my life, Mr. Elite Senior Mod :)

I still cherish your PM asking for my address so you could come to my place and beat me up. You're a loose cannon. Get a grip, Perky.

You issued the challenge that you could beat me up. I was simply calling your faggy little blowhard bluff.

And, oh, look, months later, you're still whining about it because it's all you've got.

Face it, you're a cum stain on the trousers of the internet, except that trousers can be washed. There's no cure for you, no magic Tide "now with extra anti-melty". Stupid is bred in the bone.

You bring nothing to the table, have nothing, exhibit nothing, and add nothing but the yip-yap annoyance of your punk-mouthed little whines.

No wonder all you can do here is post out of jealousy and spite, about something that doesn't even concern you, but about which you obviously care deeply enough to post and post, taking your piss-ant snipe shots, all the while trying to claim you don't care -- it's all you have going on in your pathetic little life.

It must really, really SUCK to be you.
