And since we're all taking a trip down memory lane, and since I'm really enjoying banging away on these keys, here's another unsolicited anecdote about AT from the mind of reitz:

I used to work for a [now defunct] company called Stargate in Pittsburgh. It was a regional ISP, with a small data center that I could see from my cubicle where we hosted servers for two dozen or so companies. One day on my way in, I noticed a brown kid and a few others - all my age or younger - putting together servers in one of the cubicles. The brown kid looked so familiar that I did a double-take...I had to know him from somewhere, but I couldn't figure out where. He and the others had taken over two cubes that would otherwise be occupied, so I figured they had to be big customers...but they were so young, and I didn't think I'd ever seen them in the office before.

I sat down at my desk and opened up the front page, and saw the news update that said, "In Pittsburgh for a Server Upgrade." I did a tracert to anandtech.com, and saw that it was two hops from my workstation. I looked through the window nearest my cube into the server room, and right there in front of me were the servers for Anandtech, with the hostnames and IPs taped to the front. I'd worked there nearly two years and this site was by far my number one stop on the Internet during that time, and I never realized that the servers I spent so much time on were less than fifteen feet away from where I sat at work every day.

Of course the brown kid was none other than Anand lal Shimpi himself. I went over to introduce myself to him and shook his hand...and I was actually a little nervous and stumbled on my first words. He was really nice and talked to me for a minute, and stopped by my desk to say hello when he came in to finish the build the next day. I've met a few other notable people in the years since, but no one that I was as interested in talking to as Anand.

lol brown kid. Thanks for giving us newbs the background info on Dennil's epic thread. It's interesting to hear from old timers about how the place has changed. I feel the sadness about how it's difficult to find a forum where one can have a nice thought out discussion that doesn't turn into "LOL dumbass" or "U R teh GHeyZorZ" I think maybe i would have fit better in the old days than here and now. I still like coming into OT though because every once in a while, you'll find that gem of a thread that makes your seams burst.

This all went down before I posted regularly as well, I remember browsing and lurking in the actual HARDWARE forums long before I ever signed up, let alone visited OT regularly, so I'm glad this thread was created, just for history sake. Very good read. :)

I didn't care about the whole Dennil/NWM fiasco when it happened, I'm surprised anybody else cares about it still.

Rio Rebel's post mirrors my feelings exactly Dennil, you've made your apology and paid your penance long ago.

Just don't post your colonoscopy pics, Ok?

I was around back then, and I never even noticed it happened, and didn't even hear about it until Dennilfloss was unbanned last year. Course, I didn't browse OT back then, Hot Deals mostly...

And I still don't get what the big deal was, bunch of drama queens...members and mods alike.

How many of you were here when we could actually post pictures in our posts.
I couldn't stand it when AT enable image posting because it invited useless threads thus became more of a thorn than anything positive.

Even with out the image posts, absolutely pointless threads like Butter repeatedly bring down the server/s.

Dennis, I don't speak for everyone, but the last thing I want to see is you feeling like you have to apologize yet again for this. It is history, and if anyone still feels bitterness toward you after this long, the problem is theirs, not yours.

As you probably are well aware, I always took one of the strictest positions against you on this. I was the last one to agree with letting you back. I say that to be transparent, not to restart any old animosities...because God knows, they are OLD. And they should stay that way - old and in the past.

As far as I'm concerned, you have made all the apologies necessary to this community long ago. You owe no more than that to us now - it is done.

I only defended the thread (and continue to do so) because it is interesting, and it is nice for people to know the story, since at the time we tried to control the situation and limit the information.

We should be able to talk about this now without raging emotions.
Yeah it's kind of like you were ahead of your time, now we have forums full of Flossies;)

i joined because a friend introduced me to the hotdeals forum but i did lurk OT quiet often. seeing some really old names in here and it's bringing back some memories. it's always good to have these types of discussions because not only is it a part of OT history, but being able to talk about shows that you've moved on also.

the forums were much different back then also, people replied because they really had something to contribute to the thread, not because they are trying to hit senior/gold/diamond...whatever member. personally, at this rate, i'll be a lifer when i'm 50/60. anywho, thanks for the post, much appreciated.

The forums have changed a lot. Also consider that back then a large chunk of the people on AT were high schoolers. Now days most seem to be college or post-college. With the maturing of those in the field things just change. I know that for myself back when I joined (~1999/2000 even though my account shows 2001) I could damn near tell you the serial numbers of every part in my desktop. Now days I have to look up what components I even have.

LOL how true.

Been awhile since the more "senior" members have check in.

Don't believe me? Just look at this thread! This is about unique AT history, that reached outside of AT and broke through into the wider world. And yet, look at the one brain celled IDIOTS who not only lack the intellectual curiosity AND the necessary two minute attention span to read an interesting post BUT take the time out of their busy and important lives to post TL;DR as if this were some sign of their coolness and NOT a sad admission that they're freaking mouth breathers.

fwiw, the first post in the confession thread was a nef or a tl;dr type post. so i'm not sure exactly how much OT has changed. the second post was ViperGTS.

I'd say it's mostly the signal to noise ratio that's changed.
I can echo the sentiment of many, although I wasn't on AT way back in the old days, I was highly active on WBS (from about 1995 to 99-00 when the last buyout killed it) and I'm pretty sure the sense of community there matched what it was here. Things just aren't like they used to be--we're all getting old :p

This thread has that odd feel of a grandparent telling their grandkids the story of back in the day. I joined these forums a bit late to the parade so all I knew of this was from the register article which I had to reread for the third time today but it's nice to finally read about it from a different perspective because it's actually quite interesting for someone as vested into ATOT as me. Thanks reitz.

Maybe a year or so after that, I was enjoying one of my favorite pasttimes (browsing porn) when I stumbled on an image that was immediately familiar. Not just "she looks like someone I know", but a certain, "I've seen this picture before". I must have stared at her for an hour, wracking my brain to figure out who she was. I was thinking she was someone I went to high school with, and then the light bulb went off. I pulled up the 'Memorial Page', and not only was it the same person I was looking at, but the same picture. My version, though, wasn't cropped at the shoulders, and I was looking at her naked boobs and then some...

I'm surprised nobody has asked for the picture yet. ATOT is getting slow.

I asked perknose in a different thread. Maybe reitz will hook us up?

I probably still have all the pics stored on a CD somewhere but don't expect me to share porn here. Probably have some text documents too, like my confession and the original post of the accident thread. I would need to look for them but I'm pretty sure I can find them. As for setting the record straight, I am willing to discuss details of the matter if the mods think this thread can help people to reconciliate and move forward and if the participants can remain level-headed and avoid drama. I have already apologized profusely and sincerely and amended my ways since this incident, which is why the mods offered me to come back.

I don't think you did anything wrong nor violated the TOS at the time either. You got railroaded by Red Dawn, Russ, and some other "special people" at ATOT.

haha, different times back then...
mods were all secret, and some people just couldn't seem to get banned no matter how many rules they violated.

I just remember a bunch of people basically calling for his head because he fooled them. OMG A FAKE PERSONA ON TEH INTERTUBES... CALL THE COPS!

I just thought all the uproar and righteous indignation was pretty loller.

DON'T APOLOGIZE FOR SHIT, DENNY. YOU'LL MAKE A GREAT BORG SOME DAY!

BTW my favorite aspect of the Flossie/ NWM charade is when they'd dicusss how Flossie was abducted by Aliens and how she was so distressed by the fact that they kept visiting him at night. She (Dennil) called them "The Greys"

If you were around, you would know that AT was more of a community in those days.
