That's the way I feel. OVer the years I've thrown out all my physical games, I don't think I have a single one I replaced lots of them with Steam sales. All music CDs are now gone, now it's all FLAC for me. I threw out my video Tape collection which was quite good and I might even throw out my DVD collection if TV on demand, Netflix types of technology get better.

I'm also going to buy an Ereader and hopefully get rid of half my books. Wave of the future, everything virtual.

How do you get FLAC without the physical disc? Do you buy a CD to rip and then throw it out? Or is there a digital shop that sells FLAC that I haven't heard of.

I would also like to know this. I would love it if Amazon or someone similar started selling FLAC, but nobody I know of actually does.

i like having everything all under one. be it steam, impulse or whatever. Though technically we shouldnt need any of that crap. we only have all these apps, plugins and services just because of cheaters and piraters...yet it doesnt stop them anyway.

though the main issue i have with impulse, steam..etc is they always want to start up with windows. if you don't its slow as hell to get logged in and launch a game. oh well

i wish there was a multiple account app...kinda like Trillian is for instant messages, but one where you could link your accounts all under one GUI.

Downloading music is legal in Canada but I have actually bought most of what FLAC I have. I don't like any new music except maybe one song from Gaga, a song here a song there. But Zeppelin, Rush, Floyd, Meat loaf, stones, I've bought several copies of the same favourite album. I think I bought Bat out of Hell 5 different times, now I have it on FLAC and I'm guilt free. For the new music, I might hear a good song on the radio but I have no idea who is singing it, I don't like a single new band, not one.

Once I figured out how to change my Origin account name, I was totally cool with it. It downloaded BF3 way faster than anything I've ever dl'ed from steam...

LOL @ people complaining about having a browser open. If your computer can't handle running an idling webpage while playing a game then you probably can't even run the game to begin with.

My question is, if BF3 is launched from the web browser, what is Origin doing that makes it a requirement? Nothing that I'm aware of.

Yes, it may be using a negligible amount of memory, but I dislike it when applications are opened for no reason. As near as I can tell, Origin is opening because EA says so, and only for that reason.

I dislike this. It's just weird. Any way you launch it, Origin->Browser->BF3, Browser->Origin->BF3, start menu->origin->browser-BF3, there's an extra step for no reason.

So, basically you want to cut out the middle-man

I was hyped for BF3, I've loved the whole series except for BF2142. But the news that it would be origin only just pushed the wrong buttons, I have 200 games on steam and I simply don't want to be loading origin or even have it installed to access 1 in 200 games, it's just silly.

I tend to make the comparison to mobile phones, I don't want to carry a different mobile phone for every network, if I have a T-mobile phone and someone releases a network where I can't get access from T-Mobile then I'm not going to carry a 2nd phone just to call people on that network, it's just stupid.

I struggled with the decision for a bit but ultimately it comes down to EA bending our arms using a popular title to try and force Origin on us as they're desperate to use the service, and I don't see that as a business/customer relationship I want to be part of, it's just all in bad taste.

once i'm done with single player campaign it's going off my system...

then you are missing the only part of the game that is getting the good reviews..
might as well skip it and save yourself the cash if you want to play single..

pretty much every review is in synch on this one.. single is very MEH and doesnt even embrace the power of Frostbite2 like the multi does.

I personally HATED both the Alpha and the beta.. going through Origin and the web browser flat sucked..
could not adjust any of my settings and flat turned off a day 1 1942-BFBC2 and everything in between veteran of BF..

I found it horrible and clunky and just flat miserable to use..
give me in in game MP browser like every other game..
also give me a launcher that allows me to tweak all my settings easily.
makes it especially better when trying to tweak an Eyefinity/Nvidia Surround setup..

People are finding myriad retarded reasons to hate on BF3 because it uses origin and battlelog. It uses too much ram. It requires too many mouse clicks to get in game. They don't want a service besides Steam on their system.

EA doesn't want to give Valve a cut of their cash, and doesn't want to pander to them for their DLC. Not hard to understand.

I dont understand all the fuss over Origin. Can someone fill me in on the rage?

Angry nerds and computer gamers who want to think they have control of the situation and by not buying BF3 think they will change something. The fact is they will still be buying it I bet. Watch out of 100 people who refuse to buy it I bet at least 90 of them will still.

it's not that i love steam - i like steam, and i want as few services and accounts as possible. steam does enough, well enough, that a competitor would need to offer something extraordinary in addition to exclusive titles. i don't see that coming from origin.

I think computer nerds get off on complaining about frivolous nonsense.

I don't like it. I really don't. Soon there will be 10 different apps running for 20 games because they all broke into their own little mandatory app.

I'm not overly interested in BF3 to begin with, but the reality isn't so much about BF3, but Origin, Impulse, Steam, Green Man Gaming, (is Amazons an app?), and whatever the next flavor of the week "marketing application" they want you to install, because essentially that's what it really is, just another way to market.

Let me purchase, download the executable, and be done with it. Games these days should all have autoupdates anyway (but they don't). If the people who only use Steam are that lazy (and yes, that's the excuses they use, i don't wanna have to update, etc etc) then why would they want 5 different software managers on their system to keep track of? It's only going to get worse.

Exactly, the biggest reason to not buy it is because the game is crap. ():)

I'm waiting till tomorrow till I use my key with Origin. If by tomorrow morning Steam hasn't gotten a deal struck, I doubt they will. Then its Origin for me. Hopefully they will. That's even assuming a key would transfer to Steam which seems highly unlikely.

When you invest money into games that are spread about various accounts linked to applications when technically nothing other than the game itself is needed, its just kinda stupid to start requiring more and more things.

when does it end is the question. How long till you need Impluse,GFWL,Steam,Origin, social club.and whatever else some publisher/dev decides they want to require to play the games you'd like to play.

i already have impulse, GFWL and Steam installed now. though it may seem like no big deal to add another on top of that, then i guess i just keep that idea goin when some other Market app store service becomes required too.
Next thing ya know each publisher will have their own required client of some sort regardless of where you buy it from.

though no one can deny its far nicer and more convenient to just open up one GUI to purchase and access all your games. Segregation of clients and accounts should be of some concern to any PC gamer when each becomes required to play various PC games.
Lets each publisher do similar onto a console sometime and see if everyone still shrugs it off as no biggie

At the same time, its this freedom that is one of the greatest things about the PC. If a publisher or devs wants to distribute via X way, so be it. Thats the beauty of the PC platform.
Not so with consoles. The online portion of consoles is ridiculous. Xbox Live is horrible in my opinion and I have to pay for it. I have to *pay* to simply access half of the game I've already forked 60$ over for. Ridiculous. Sorry, I grew up on PC and that is a travesty. I will never pay for Xbox Live. That's like forcing GFWL on me.
EA should just publish on both platforms and let gamers decide. Of course we know who would easily win. I'll vote with my wallet on the next release, but not BF3.

Yes, basically. I actually liked how Impulse did it. You needed Impulse open to download/update, but not to run the game. I like how Gamersgate/GOG do it, where you simply need an executable.

I do not like how Origin does it, where you need their app open because they say so. I'm not even the biggest fan of Steam, where they do the same thing. Steam, however, offers a bit more, including friends lists, screenshots, cloud saving, etc. Due to pouring hundreds of hours into TF2 and the L4D series, most of my gaming friends are on Steam, which sort of locks me into it.

I'd love it if everyone opened up their APIs so that they could interface through a third-party app like Trillian or Digsby. Steam cross-chat with Origin? Awesome.

What I would NOT want to see is this:

Unfortunately, this may be what we're headed for if everyone follows EA's lead.

For me, I like Steam... but really I like the idea of steam. A one stop shop where I can buy all my games, store them forever, automatic updating, no disc check, I can install with a simple click etc. It's like having my hard drive store online with all the games I own. Perfect world.
Now I look at steam's upcoming games list without EA titles, and it looks weak. I look at Origin and it looks bare, hardly worth visiting their store, but there are at least 2 games I'll be buying from them. And really Steam never had all the games, there's no Age of Empires series, lots of missing Star wars games I know there's lots more I just can't think of them right now. Steam could go bankrupt at anytime then where are we? no games I suppose. Better to spread the risk around if you enjoy the convenience of buying a virtual product.

Btw, is there an update on weather EA is going to be having limited installs on it's Origin games?

Exactly.

Part of the complaint is the principle of the thing, it's like with DRM that has limited installs, but require you to de-activate the game before uninstalling so that you get back an install.

That seems like a reasonable idea, until you consider what happens if every single game does it, then when you want to format your PC (which some of us like to do frequently), and you have say 50 games installed, then you have a massive amount of messing about ahead of you.

It's the same with these digital distribution platforms, how long is it before we have one for each publisher, with publishers going out of business and merging and all the rest of it. It's just not smart...

You want one mobile for all your needs, you want one internet connection for all your needs, you want one cable TV service for all your needs and I want 1 digital distribution platform for all my needs, it's perfectly reasonable in my eyes.
