I read the story, but hadn't seen the picture till here in this thread. This is definately gray area type stuff. Regardless of whether it is outright racism or not, this is not something that should passed around or circulated through email by a political official. I think what is truly amazing is how ignorant many republicans and teabaggers really are on this subject. They forget there is a lot of white people who like Obama and some others who will be turned off by this stuff and support him solely as way to distance themselves from behavior like this.

I think classy hit the nail on the head, here.

I suppose the only non-racial argument that a teabagger could use to defend this, is to take the picture as an acceptance that creation is a steaming pile of bullshit.

see: we came from Apes! This just shows Obama as a less-evolved human! that's not racst!

I'd agree with that. Good luck getting a teabagger to come around to it, though. It's probably harder for a teabagger to accept science than it is for them to be tolerant of non-WASPS.

Tasteless action by a inconsequential party member magnified by a partisan hack to broadly denigrate his perceived enemies...wow. Party of Intellectualism my ass.

the picture in question doesn't even make sense racially. his mom was fucking white, yet she is depicted as a chimp as well. so how does drawing the conclusion that dressing obama up as a chimp = racist? because he's black? did it say that? or was it just some silly picture? Please...

I just don't think the Obama pictures are funny because Obama isn't a dumbass. He is a smart guy whether you share his beliefs or not, but Bush came off as a genuine idiot.

You've nailed both people correctly, but unfortunately Obama strikes me as a reasonably intelligent egotistical fool, but I'd not portray him as a chimp, merely as a pious donkeys ass.

It's tasteless, and because he's black (let's face it there isn't "half black" in our culture), that makes the person doing it racist even if it wasn't intended. Perception is key in understanding the dynamic. Is the person really racist? I don't know, but that doesn't matter. The tag sticks.

Perhaps one of these days people will look at intent rather than words, but that day is a long time off. Fortunately I associate with a lot of people who don't take themselves seriously so a lot of things fly around that outsiders wouldn't understand. That's not our problem though.

The Bush pictures made sense. The Obama pic is vague and a poor way to make a punchline out of suspicions of his birth certificate if that was really the goal. I'm not even black and I can see how that's mildly offensive.

Again, it's not clear what the intention is, and that's a problem for some people. Understandably so.

no it doesn't fucking matter hayabusa. if someone is trying to say "since obama is black, being portrayed as a chimp is racist" what does that say about the picture in question which is quite clearly a "family" of chimps, mama chimp, papa chimp and obama chimp. Everyone knows Obama's mom was white, if they don't they really aren't worth your time anyways so they don't count as part of "everyone", so is it too racist to depict white people as chimps? Or only black people? I don't see the issue.

bad taste = check
stupid picture = check
racist = uh... not unless it explicitly says so.

The dude has chimp like ears. He doesn't have the uncanny resemblance Bush did, but the joke can be made. Also, all of you flogging his cock on his intelligence are morons. Without a teleprompter Obama stumbles over his words and says just as much dumbshit as Bush did. I'm not sure being literate now a days is such a worthy thing of praise, considering fucking 3 year olds are reading now a days.

1.) No he doesn't.
2.) Every president uses teleprompters constantly. Bush said as much dumb shit as he did WITH a teleprompter.

As I said before, black people in America were enslaved for centuries in one of the most shameful acts this nation has ever been engaged in. It was justified in a significant part by the idea that they were subhuman and apelike. With that in mind, is there any person with any understanding of human society whatsoever surprised that showing black people to be subhuman and apelike today is more offensive than doing the same thing to a white person? How is this difficult to understand?

Well it's as racist as a person wants it to be. It depicts Obama's white mother as a chimp too, so I'm not so sure it's all that different from the Bush pictures. I wouldn't actively argue against anyone who saw it as racist because one's perceptions are what they are. I can understand how someone could infer that and don't begrudge them that position. If one is arguing the intent of the picture's creator I don't know that it's all that relevant. Whatever juvenile or possibly hateful motive it was, the details don't concern me. This much is clear: it's beyond distasteful to be coming out of any elected official's office.

LOL. Are you seriously arguing that the person who made that was intending to depict Obama's white mother as a chimp? I don't see her face photoshopped onto the chimp.... the only face is Obama's.

California Republican sends E-mail depicting Obama as an ape

An e-mail reportedly sent by party central committee member Marilyn Davenport shows an image, posed like a family portrait, of chimpanzee parents and child, with Obama's face artificially superimposed on the child. Text beneath the photo reads, "Now you know why no birth certificate."

Davenport, a tea party activist, represents the 72nd Assembly District in Orange County on the central committee.

She represents Brea, Placentia, Fullerton and portions of other Orange County cities to the county committee tasked with fundraising, campaigning and debating policy for the Republican Party.

===========================================
I thought California was all Liberal and Democrat?

This was surprising especially coming from such a huge population center.

Looks like the Tea party has successfully infiltrated California.

This is the direction the country is going, pretty disgusting but like Wisconsin, don't complain about it after you voted them in power.

Orange County is very conservative politically, as is much of the inland empire and central California. Even San Diego has a fairly substantial conservative base.

Seriously, it doesn't fucking matter. He has ears that stick out from the side of his head, it looks chimpish. I'm sorry your dumbass thinks that's racist, it isn't. Like I said, it's clearly a family of chimps with Obama being the baby. His mother was a white woman, his mother is being depicted as a chimp. A white woman and a black man are both portrayed as chimps. It's only racist if 1. it's intent was to make that comparison(he's black so he looks like a chimp) or 2. you're dumbass views it as racist, in which case YOU think it's racist, that doesn't make it racist.

I'm not saying it can't be, I'm saying jumping to conclusion makes you look like an emotional dumbass with a narrow world view.

IIRC, Orange County was the cradle of the John Birch Society.
