hojl,

My fans were both "you-know-who" inside hologram. The 'pad' looked more like tape residue and I thinkI read the directions where it was a thermal compond.

Could be wrong... about being compound and reading the directions.

I tried running a Celeron 500 without a heat sink in this thing and it starts getting errors within a few minutes. If I open the windows and direct a window fan into the open case I can run for a little longer (I live in Minnesota). I ordered a low profile HSF from Directron but it won't be here until next week. None of my spare HSFs fit with that angled DIMM.

commemoratives I figured you had a intel retail HSF. I reread garsh's post and I found out he bought from Directron rather then package2you. Since you both bought from Directron most likely you guys got the same HSF .
I on the other had got a small POS little socket-7 type HSf from package2you. This thing is about 60% of the size of the smaller retail HSF of intel (the black one not the silver one). This little HSF has a spongy like pad on there...

Sorry for the mix up.

BTW
habraham I don't think it is advised to operate a computer now a days without a HSF. Thank god you didn't have a t-bird or you would have a small fire.

Not bad...I just bought a CD-Rom, floppy, NIC, thermal tape, and pentium HSF for $40 shipped.

I got mine from Package2you, picked up the chip at an auction.

Spongy material make me nervous by definition. I usually shoot for the thinnest film of AS2 I can apply with a razor, anything more sounds to me like it could act as an insulator...

The retail fans was really tight. Had to remove the RAM to get it on and bind the module a *little* to get it back in. The edge of the SIMM rests ever so slightly on the retaining clip.

After painting it I had my daughter decorate it with stickers... lots of stickers. Looks better than the silver, she had a great time, and now her grandma's computer will be truly special.

On a side note. I originally installed Win2K on this. Took less than 40 minutes and ran flawlessly. APM wasn't quite there, but it was solid requiring a gig on the hard drive. Last weekend I reformatted, Installed 98SE, did the driver updates. All at less than 500megs. Not as solid and all sorts of problems with the driver updates. Probably should have left it on 2K as it will be primarily a surfing machine.

I installed 98SE on mine too. After downloading the most up-to-date drivers from the various manufacturers web sites (well, Intel), everything seemed to be fine.

Then, I did a "Windows Update", and Microsoft's web site said that it had updated drivers for me.

Foolish me decided to install them, and the machine was hosed. No sound card, CD drive wasn't being recognized, and I couldn't shut down cleanly - the machine would hang.

So I re-installed from scratch, skipped Microsoft's updated drivers, and everything is fine again.

Come to think of it I did the MS update too. I didn't notice any problems before that...

I'll redo and see if I can get it running better without the MS update. Might just go with 2K, I was impressed with the ease and speed of that install.

I loaded 98SE and used Windows Update to download all the patches. I also installed all of Intel's 810 updates after that. I haven't had any problems with the CD-ROM or shut downs. I haven't tried the sound card yet.

The O/S patches are fine - just don't download the "updated drivers" from Microsoft. Get all the drivers from Intel's website.

Just ordered one (533/128MB) for my parents, should make a good surfing machine to replace their P100 :) I think the first thing I'll do is replace the CMOS battery to avoid problems.

Okay I remade my Burbie and wanted to put out some info about the HSF I used.
I put in a Gorb (Golden Orb) I had lying around. It fits and still has room to breath. It runs great under win2000.
Now I want to paint it :)
I am think if I have time I am gonna paint it Black and have a yellow strip down the middle on the top. This is because for some reason the burbie to me looks like a Football helmet and I want it to look like the steelers helmet. a plan hope I have time to compete it.

Okay, I finally unpacked my Burbie tonight. I have a nice C500 I got from a guy in the For Sale forums and I was all ready to go. I crack open the case to discover....

No motherboard.

Nothing.

I have the Enlight PS in there, extra fan. One CD and one floppy. That's it! So, now - I'm left with the question. Do I return it or just buy a FlexATX mobo (cheaply) that will fit in there and give me the ability to just drop a P3 on it from the get-go? Decisions, decisions. I just thought you guys would find it funny that there was NO MOBO! I know I did.

Just sharing my experience. :)

The Motherboard should have been packaged separately as they are not installed. It comes wrapped in bubble wrap. Check the shipping box. If not, give package2you a call as they might have missed it.

The Golden Orb does look to fit this box perfectly, but I had a hard time finding it forsale, so I end up just picking up a cheapie HSF from a local shop, $9 and works great.

Hmmm, one word here....

Doh!

Seems I missed it. The box is long since gone as well. Oh well. Sometimes you win some, sometimes you throw some away.

IR, check back on page 3, I believe habraham might have received an extra MB, maybe he'll sell it to you? Check it out. As it might be hard to find a MB to fit this system nicely.

Good Luck.

Press and hold F2 after turning it on to get into the BIOS.....sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't....I think because the USB drivers are legacy and sometimes don't get initialized until it is too late.

I'm posting from my Burbie, Directon sent me a 64MB stick instead of 128MB :| I have the random reboot problem but I replaced my CMOS battery while buliding it. I'm thinking maybe the CPU is overtemping, I'll have to check that when I pull it apart to replace the RAM :| I painted the case flat black today and it looks factory good.
