I installed the new motherboard from package2you and it works fine except that when I power down with win98se it doesn't shut off by it self -- I get the message "It's okay to turn off the computer now" any ideas?

poppagene - Go to the Control Panel and click on System and the Device Manager tab.....notice that your ACPI is flagged? Highlight the flagged ACPI and click on Properties....check the box that says Force to Use ACPI 1.0....should work ok after a reboot...pc should now shut off automatically

Anyone needing a replacement power supply or just wanting an extra?

you can get a Gateway Power Supply (Pull) here... Linkaroni for $7.99 + shipping or a new Enlight Power Supply, at the same place for $12.99 + shipping.

Sounds like a deal!

I got one of these from Directron back in December and am experiencing the following problem...

Modem volume is set to off.
When online, the modem will sound off at different times.
It does not disconnect you when online but is more of a nuisance. :disgust:

Any way of fixing this?

Is this a sign that the Modem is going out? :(

I have put together another one of these computers and have not had any problems.

I also noticed that on the Directron site it reads

"One-year warranty, parts and labor."

Would they actually take the board back this late??

Thanks in advance.

I bought one of these machines back in November for my fiances sister. It seemed like a nice decent machine and ran great for me while I had it the first two weeks. She got it early for Christmas and ran it fine until two weeks ago. Now the dang thing won't even turn on. It just sits there. I have checked everything, all is connected right, everything is exactly the same as it was when I assembled the machine. I have tried a better power supply like some of the people did and still nothing, no beeps, no post, no signs of life. I know the second power supply, a 230watt model, works fine.

Anyone had this happen? Anyone have a clue whats wrong with it? I have never had a machine totally refuse to do anything before without any visible signs of damage. I am close to buying a new system to transplant the rest of the parts into but thats an expensive option.

bear42, you mentioned everything but the battery. I had a similar issue and putting in a new battery took care of the problem.

Sounds exactly like the problem I ran into.

Worked great the first week, refused to start a week later.

Try replacing the CMOS backup battery on the motherboard.

That brought my dad's Burbie back to life!
It's been working fine ever since.

Help!!! I got 2 of the POS machines for the niece and nephew and having mucho problems. 1 machine powers up fine but when I go to install software it will not boot. It keeps daying to insert the correct boot disk. I have tried 9 different ones so far and no luck. Any suggestions. Also, when I go to Bios info, the screen flickers like crazy.
Second one is dead, checked the power supply and mobo and no signs of life. Floppy is also dead. E-mailed directron many, many times and nothing.
Input greatly appreciated.

Dea, I had similar problems:

My second one was seemingly dead. The power supply worked as the cpu fan was running, but no other signs of life. All it really needed was a brand new cmos battery. Other people buying from directron have had power supply issues. If the cmos battery doesn't solve your problem, get directron to honor the warranty.

After solving the cmos battery issue, i ran into your other problem. It wouldn't boot. I got the insert boot disk message too. It turned out that the hard drive jumpers were set for slave rather than for master (my bad). The CompUSA branded hdd was a Quantum Fireball LCT20 which I have discovered is known for the confusing jumper diagram which apparently shows the drive upside down. My first fix was to use cable select on the cd and hdd which worked ( although the bios showed the cd as master and the hdd as slave). After more research I figured out the right jumper settings and the hard drive is againg the master of the ide.

Poppagene,

You write...

"I had to rma one of my mboards with packages 2 you and now all is great. "

What warranty did Packages2you have on their Burbie?

I know Directron gives a year warranty.

BTW, I remember that the Modem sound began occuring right after I installed an old 8gb. hard drive.
I reinstalled a 6gb. and have not heard any Modem sound.

Can a Hard Drive going bad make a sound like a modem transmitting?

I'm going to give it a few days before I make a decision to rma the board or not.

As I recall, The burbie has only one IDE channel, correct?

Assuming that's right, would I noticably hurt performance of an 7200 rpm ATA hard drive by using a DVD drive that maxes out at DMA 2 (16.7 M) rather than UDMA33?

TIA, Dave
