ok i found Netflix's blu-ray and HD DVD selection does Blockbuster have any?

I have rented a few blu rays from blockbuster.com...my local store doesn't have either yet...

The sale of PS3 Blu-ray players are counted in this and they should not be because of how the people that buy the PS3 use it for. They use it for games not movies. This is going to be a long format war because of the muscle behind all of the backing both formats have. I have a $200 HD-DVD player addon for my 360 and if Blu-ray comes out in front, Microsoft probably will release a Blu-ray player addon, so win win. We will have to just wait and see.

Another thing, most stores and companies give out free movies with the purchase of a Blu-ray player. That is more heavily towards Blu-ray than HD-DVD, just look in your local retailers ads.

yea, while I think it sucks to have an ext drive, all things considered I think it was brilliant by microsoft to do so.

I think Blu-ray is winning, based on their impressive disc sales and the PS3.
Though it is not winning enough to be secure in winning, I certainly am not convinced Blu-ray will win, and am still waiting to see what format I choose to go with...

PS3s do count heavily in the Format Wars, just not as much as a standalone player.

HD-DVD disc sales were far higher than blu-ray sales before the PS3 was released, but the PS3 has almost by itself flipped that around to blu-ray outselling HD-DVD 2 to 1 so far this year.

Right now there is no good reason to choose a PS3 over a 360 unless you also want blu-ray. The 360 has a bigger library, better online play, and costs less even with the extended warranty for when it dies on you.

Blu-ray is winning.

The PS3 basically pushed a bunch of BLu-Ray players into the market.

Blu Ray software sales have been consistently higher too.

I am a Blu-Ray fan myself, its a superior technology. Its outselling HD-DVD by large margins, and I have need for its larger storage space.

Actually, Toshiba offers 5 free HD DVDs with the purchase of their $400 A2. On April 1st, Circuit City will be offering an additional 4 free HD DVDS with the purchase of an A2. Best Buy has offered 2 BR movies with the purchase of a $1000 stand alone unit, but they also did the same with the Toshiba A2.

I like Blu-Ray to win because of its studio support. They're selling more discs at the moment and they seem to have more blockbusters on the way (Pirates 3 and Spider-Man 3 are coming out this year).

I want Blu-Ray to win partly because of its higher capacity, but in the end it's about movies, and Blu-Ray will have more. Universal is the only studio that's exclusively supporting HD-DVD (so I hear).

I bought a PS3 two weeks ago.

I own zero PS3 games, 3 blu-ray movies, and 2 movies currently rented from netflix. I have been playing God of War 2 these past couple weeks. 🙂

I think blu-ray will win out, and hope it does. HD content desperately need capacity. Four hours of video on a regular dvd uses a 25:1 compression ratio. The same video in hd on a dual layer hd-dvd needs about a 170:1 compression ratio. Dual layer blu-ray will bring the compression ratio down to about 100:1.

It's not about Sony hating or Sony loving, it's just recognizing that hd-dvd probably is not going to cut it in the long run.

I think Blu-Ray is in the lead, but I can't help but suspect that HD DVD will win in the end for it's name alone. HD DVD is obviously a type of DVD, and people will quickly pick up on HD meaning High Definition. Blu-Ray, on the other hand, sounds nerdy and techy and people won't always know what it is.

Just a guess, but if all else becomes close to equal (pricing, availability), the average Joe at Wal-Mart will have a puzzled look on his face as he glances at the Blu-Ray players on his way past to the HD DVD section to buy a new HD DVD player so he can watch high definition movies. On his way home maybe his son will mention that Blu-Ray is high definition video as well. Then later that night Joe will mention to his buddies the Blu-Ray thing, asking/suggesting that maybe it's some HD DVD format invented by the Chinese or some middle east country to compete with the American HD DVD.

So one out of many huh.

hd-dvd and blu-ray will be around for a long time. Buy whichever one meets your needs. Personally, the less money I give to Sony's camp, the better.

Well, the xbox fanboys say "there are no good PS3 games" so if they're right then most buyers must want the blu-ray feature 🙂

I read somewhere on avsforums about a poll where people who played their regular DVD's on a High Def TV responded to the poll that they now had HD DVD capility...😀

they were confused by the name...

But you still have to admit that everyone who has a PS3 does indeed have a blu-ray movie player. And most who have neither hd-dvd or blu-ray are playing the waiting game until one format is clearly dominant.

And that right there is the other reason I'm banking on blu-ray. And if I'm wrong, I'll just take the cost hit to buy a dual format player. But my gut instincts say I won't be wrong.

anyone else find it funny that more people think that Blu-Ray is "Winning This Race",
while there are more people who have "Neither But I Plan To Buy" - HDDVD
