I guess that per micro-ounce, spider venom (esp. the more toxic kind) must be the most valuable substance on earth (for what purpose, no idea).
If you could milk those babies for their venom on a large scale- PROFIT!?!

Never looked into that, but I'm sure there's enough anti venom to go around now for a Black Widow bite 😉

Edit2---- Male spider gone. Checked this morning and couldn't find him. I figure the Widow ate him and dropped his body, and then the crickets finished him off. He could'nt have gotten out and he's not hiding anywhere.
.....
Edit4---- (6/20/08)
..... Oh, and I guess the male did get out! I found him dead on the kitchen floor a few days ago 🙁
That is just OH so reassuring. And you're married? Your wife has to be insane =P

HS!

Dude you're gonna get your ass killed.

heres a question, how are you going to know if the eggs have hatched yet when you put them into a container that you can not see through the side walls?

I'm just imaging you frolicking along and opening the cottage cheese container expecting to see 2 eggs, only to be attacked by hundreds of baby black widows

Attacked?

I just think most of you have a phobia of spiders. Do you really think I want to get bitten? I'm careful, no worries mate!

If I were you, I'd be more worried about a Brown Recluse than a Black Widow! Those actually roam around looking for food, where Black Widows stake out a place and stay there. Usually high in a corner somewhere.

when a fully grown male has escaped from your 'cages', good luck with itty bitty babies that can end up a lot worse.

I don't have a fear of wildlife, but I am not going to be breeding potentially dangerous ones in my house. At least get a workshop detached from your home.

folks, we have Darwin live in da house ... get yer popcorn and pull up yer seats, show's about to begin!!!

Give me a break

Most of you don't like spiders, so be it (run away run away), but it's not like I'm going about this like I've never done it.

I've had Tarantulas, Iguanas, Scorpions, Harvester Ants (that actually sting, not just bite), Praying Mantis/Mantids. Oh, I also harvested Lacewings to put on my pepper plants to kill the aphids 😉

first lets scratch off the tarantulas, iguanas, ants, mantis and lacewings. Depending on your scorps, let's you weren't breeding any.

You are actively providing a 'safe haven' for poisonous critters now. in the wild many eggs sacks are pillaged and the spider babies picked off.

What's your control mechanism here? Are you really thinking having a home covered in poisonous spiders is smart? Good luck with lawsuits from neighbors should any get bit and find out your are actively breeding these.

This is what happens when someone isn't tough enough to hang out with the dog fighter crowd or even cock fighters.

'Damn man, I got my ass beat up....YEAH SPIDERS FTW!'

First off your totally stupid. They are dangerous and in the right situations deadly. You think that the female ate the male, but while it does happen it is not the norm, BUT THE EXCEPTION. So one is missing. And in most states it is illegal to keep any kind of venomous creature. And now you have allowed them to breed with no controls at all. Quite frankly you should be reported to the proper authorities. What you are doing is a danger to yourself, your family, and the public. Here is a couple of quotes about black widows

Black Widows

"Adult male Black Widows wander in search of females but do not feed or bite. Females may occasionally kill and eat a male after mating but this is more the exception than the rule."

"The venom of the female black widow spider is 15 times as toxic as the venom of the Prairie Rattlesnake. Only a minute amount of the toxin is injected in a single bite by the spider however, so they are rarely fatal. By comparison, the relatively large amount of injected rattlesnake venom results in about 15 to 25 percent mortality among those bitten.

The bite itself is often not painful and may go unnoticed. But the poison injected by the the Black Widow bite can cause abdominal pain similar to appendicitis as well as pain to muscles or the soles of the feet. Other symptoms include alternating salivation and dry-mouth, paralysis of the diaphragm, profuse sweating and swollen eyelids.

Persons with heart conditions or other health problems may require a hospital stay. (Heart and lung failure may result in death.) A physician can evaluate the severity of the bite, and give specific antivenin or calcium gluconate to relieve pain if necessary. Healthy people recover rapidly in two to five days."

All I can say is that there is a serious lack of fire in all these pictures.

kill them all.......now. You are one ignorant person OP. Heres hoping there are no small children around that house.

OP, you better pray to God you don't black out for no reason when you open one of those baby jars. Whatever happened to getting a dog or cat as pets? Shit, even pray mantis would be better than this crazy shit you're doing.

And you plan on releasing the babies? Have you lost your fucking mind?

Ps. I'm sorry for you wife, you're fucking insane.

I would imagine you could make a pretty penny selling these, assuming you separate them, they should stay alive. I bet you can make $50 per spider. 50*150= New HDTV

This is of course assuming it is legal in your state.

Oh, and they're not black when little 😉 And yes, these are Black Widow eggs.
1 Egg has hatched!

that's a lot of f'ing spiders !

a friend of mine got bit by one, lost a chunk of flesh about the size of
a golf ball.

what if one of them bites you in the privates ?

Yup, I know if I was his neighbor Id be freaked out and run for my life

If you wanna get killed that badly go ahead, but dont get anyone else involved

Well as a So. Californian who is still has a dimple in the back of his thigh the size of a quarter from a female Black Widow bite. I say to you good luck with that.

The overnight hospital stay was not fun while they tried to stabilize my blood pressure. The ball of blood and fluids was quite impressive. Now I have this aversion to sitting out side in short pants if the wind is blowing. I think something is crawling on me. If you get a good solid venom injection like I did then I am sure you will see the light.

Surely there are better ways to convince the wife that the garage does not need cleaning.
My washer dryer is in mine and the wife would have a fit if I told her that I was going to release baby black widows in it just for S and G's. Orkin was my immediate solution which also took care of those pesky wasps in the overhangs. After that my own tank sprayer gets regular use.

we can only hope.

anyone hear from the OP recently...I am hoping he smarts up and torchs those spiders or dumps them outside of town.

Most spiders never reach maturity as they are wiped out massively during the egg through birth stages.

This guy nurturing them to a viable lifestage to release them in drove on their own property/in a neighborhood is going to be causing a population bloom that will put pets, children and adults at risk.

Maybe the spiders got into something and have grown to be about 4ft tall and are rampaging through the house as we speak...

Why the fuck are you breeding black widows..why...can't you get some other kind of spider..one that's not venomous

Well, I asked my wife to ask all her friends for about 10 small baby food jars. I'm going to be putting 4-8 baby spiders in each one since they're just starting to go Cannibalistic and eating eachother. The other egg in the pic still has not hatched and she has laid 2 more since 🙂 I'll update pics as soon as I can. Not sure what I'm doing with the rest yet. I may get a 10gal aquarium and put some fine mesh over the top and let them battle it out...... Just want to make sure none get out........ Oooooooh, CATASTROPHE!!!!

I'll put up new pics within' the week!

My education is heavily in zoology. I have been around venomous things. You are insane to be breeding these in a house with improper training and enclosures.

The black widow is the most venomous spider in North America. While bites are rare and not usually fatal, they are not without event.

You basically looking to have 100's of these on a property may set someone up for multiple bites.

I have no fear of spiders...I am just commenting on stupidity.

That said what you are doing may be violating laws in your area.
