Well, it's far more than a re-skin. It is essentially the entire game rebuilt. Over time it's gone from "HL: HD" to "HL: Directors Cut" to "HL: 100% refinished and reimagined from the ground up".

I hope this is a trend, I would love to see so many games done over, System Shock II for starters.

Indeed. I love System Shock 2, and Thief 1.

I'd love to see remakes of them but one word of warning, I believe the low polygon, possessed doll marionette looking humanoid characters were crucial to the freakiness.

Still, would love it. Or SS3

Didn't Valve themselves make a Half Life: Source? Whats different about this?

Half-life source is half-life ported to the source engine, but does not use any new graphics.

black mesa is supposed to be a total rework.

.

Are you sure about that? I thought that was the whole point of source was to upgrade the graphics. I'm downloading it on steam right now just to make sure lol.

i think the improved graphics were the effects and models.... but the levels look exactly the same.

I remember playing it a bit when it was released and i got this feeling of half the stuff looking good and the other half looking like shit. It kinda felt worse than a coherent crappy looking game haha

but check it out again, im not sure

Source has realistic physics and ragdolls, where the original half-life engine does not.

Yea the hl:source was just the original game in the source engine and if all you do is change the engine you get better physics, particles, sound propagation resolution and ability to run on recent OS, interface with steam etc but in the end that isn't much.

Black Mesa represents MUCH more

Half-life has been forgotten by the sands of time.

How much of a chance is there that someone 30 years old or younger has ever played half-life?
Well, considering Half-Life came out 14 years ago, you're asking what are the odds that someone played it when they were around 16 years old... I'm guessing the odds are pretty good. My nephew has played through Half-Life and he was 2 when it was released. I think you're underestimating the resolve of gamers to play games from previous generations. Pac-Man came out before I was born, but I still managed to play it. Fun is fun.

Fun is fun, but people have to be willing to give it a chance.

When Fortress Forever came out, people discredited it without even playing the game first. Most of the comments were along the lines of "its just TFC:Source".

Its that closed minded attitude that helped kill the FF community.

The question is, will people find some excuse not to play black mesa like what happened with Fortress Forever, or will people give it a chance?

Fortress Forever was released right as Team Fortress 2 was coming out. Team Fortress 2 was basically the same game but with significantly improved graphics and new gameplay modes. If Black Mesa Source were being released on the heels of Half-Life 2, I'd say it would be a complete failure because everyone would want to play the newest game. But the last Half-Life game came out 5 years ago, and that was just episodic content. People who are clamoring for a Half-Life fix don't have anything on the horizon; why not get nostalgic and run through Black Mesa again?

I plan on playing black mesa, there is no doubt about that.

The fortress forever example was used to show how quickly people discredit something without even giving it a try. People just said fortress forever was tfc:source, and never bothered to play the game.

I put several hundred hours into fortress forever and its nothing like TFC.

I hope people play black mesa, and I hope people like it. But I am concerned about the masses discrediting black mesa without even trying it. Once an impression is put into someones mind, its difficult to change their opinion.

Maybe there will be a HL3 reveal or reference at the end of the mod :hmm:.

So it's okay to remake one 'dated' game but not another? I never played System Shock II, but I dug Bioshock (1 and 2) so I'd be interested in checking a re-make of System Shock II out as well.

For what it's worth, the first time I played HL1 was when I pre-purchased HL2 on Steam, and I played the bundled version of HL1 prior to HL2's release. I wasn't really much of a gamer when HL1 originally came out, it was already dated by the time I played it, but it's still a fun game.

I might just be booted out of here but I want a remake of Capitalism II. Heck, at least wide screen for starters.

So it's okay to remake one 'dated' game but not another?

What I meant was that everyone seems to have played the hell out of HL1 including myself. I went through it about 5 times, same with Far Cry actually.

So if you redo HL1 these people might have the same experience I had with the recent Halo redo which I also played about 5 times. There is only so many times you can play these linear shooters (even far cry) before you get bored. When I played halo I think I realized that I'm so used to high rez graphics that they didn't impress me and I was literally just playing halo again and frankly, I got bored fast.

But System Shock II.. I remember I played it about 100 hours worth but only as marine. That game is infinitely replayable (bit of an exaggeration).

I'm thinking I'll get bored of this Black Mesa, hope I'm wrong but I did get bored of the source version. I only played that till the alien world crap.

It's gonna be on Steam too: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=94128543

I'd also expect co-op support to be added shorty after on either Synergy: http://synergymod.net/ or Obsidian Conflict: http://obsidianconflict.net/ Unless official co-op is added later on. As both mods currently allow you to play HL2,EP1 and EP2 as well as HL1:S. While I am talking about co-op mods I should also throw out Sven Co-op which is still being updated: http://www.svencoop.com/

Can't wait for the release and also can't wait for co-op to be added. :D
