This is pretty awesome news. As someone who worked for various mod groups back in the Quake/Quake 2 days - it can take incredibly long to get a product out as most people on the project are doing it their spare time...

It may have been something 12 years ago but I first played it probably 6-8 years ago. I didn't think it was that great even back then. Soon as you hit the Alien worlds, straight downhill in my opinion.

The Military stuff was cool but last time I played it (I went through it like 4-5 times) I don't think I finished it, I thought it was dated.

Btw, I thought they already did this hi rez thing? How many times can they reskin a game and pretend it's original?

Valve aint that great, remember HL2? Dumbest AI ever, it made the game so empty when you can run through it on the hardest setting.

Well, see, that's just it. You can't really EVER judge an FPS outside of its prime, because graphics technology advances so quickly, and it's such an integral part of the FPS experience. So unlike RPGs or platformers or strategy games, where the graphics really don't enter into the equation all that much it's a big part of action FPS.

If you played it 6 years ago, that means 2006-ish, roughly 8 years after release, which is like 3 lifetimes in PC graphics, especially back then.

Another thing people who played the game late or after playing later FPS is the sheer amount of STUFF that Half Life innovated or perfected, and subsequent FPS borrowed.

------Massive, varied environments (before it, most all FPS were Quake-esque, with dark halls and bland textures)
--Voice-acted scenes
--Quality story
--Teammate NPCs that could follow you,
--Vast array of weapons (including creative alien ones, traps, creatures, etc. Seriously...has ANY game had anything cooler than Snarks? No.)
--Memorable creature/monster moments (probably better than most FPS games)
--the BEST enemy AI of any FPS of that era
--Some of THE best modding support EVER in a game

...all wrapped up with excellent balance, art direction, and gameplay.

^^^Hey don't forget to add that HL1 had THEE STUPIDEST END BOSS ever seen before and ever seen since.

It was a giant embryo, so easy to kill. That game should have stayed Earth bound. The end of the game should have been when you escaped Black Mesa.

Are you sure it had smart AI? I liked the military but mostly because of the little things you would catch them saying. If valve had it down then.. I wonder why HL2 had the most retarded AI in a game?

You've never played borderlands? I've beaten the last boss standing still a lot of times.

Eh, for the time it was very good. Replaying it now you definitely lose something but mainly because so many games have expanded on what HL did at the time.

I didn't play Half Life until summer 2005 (bought the GOTY edition with Blue Shift, Opposing Force, etc). It was pretty awesome when I played it the first time. To be honest, it was only the second FPS I ever had on PC, Far Cry being the first.

yep, the (alien and human) marines of HL1 had a fantastic AI...(but only them, aliens had pretty much the same AI of the other games)

enemys back then only follow you and fire when they see you...doom like AI
using granades, runing away and repositioning were all brand new and awesome

the combine's AI, is similar to the "militar alien" from HL1, they are very slower than the original "human marine"...yet the AI is the same

So what is this? HL2: Episode III? The final chapter? What?

Apparently it's a remake of the original game, they just modded it with... a high rez pack? I'm going to check it out but been there done that you know.

Stupid Me I think I paid 30 or 40 dollars for the Halo high rez thing and was very disappointed. You can't go back and pretend the game is original.

From the steam greenlight page,

45%? ONLY 45%?? What happened with BM:S fans? ARE U ALIVE GUYS? Where are your votes??

After so many years of hype, we got bored, lost faith the project would ever be released and moved on.

How long can a developer hype a game before people lose interest?

Pretty much. And the fact that it's only the game through the Lambda Facility is disappointing after all this time. Is it going to take another 5-6 years to get Xen out? The people doing this mod must have been working something like an hour a week on it for all these years. There have been way more ambitious mods made in much shorter time spans.

Well, it's far more than a re-skin. It is essentially the entire game rebuilt. Over time it's gone from "HL: HD" to "HL: Directors Cut" to "HL: 100% refinished and reimagined from the ground up".

Half-life has been forgotten by the sands of time.

How much of a chance is there that someone 30 years old or younger has ever played half-life?

I can see responses from the younger generation:

Jim - You gonna play black mesa?
Mark - Whats black mesa?
Jim - Remake of some game that was released in the 1990s
Mark - lulz

6+ years ago half-life / half-life 2 was fresh in the minds of gamers. In gaming years, we are dealing with a new generation.

Since when has IP recognition stopped a games success? Do you think Fallout 3 sold millions of copies because 360 owners were clamoring for a follow up to their favorite 1997 PC exclusive?

You are trying to compare a new game to a remake.
Yes, because it makes no difference in the context of your post, which was all about people not playing it because the game had been forgotten. Fallout 3 sold well because people apparently liked what they saw of it, they didn't judge it on the fact that it was a sequel to a turn based RPG released in 1997, or because they never heard of the first 2.

Black Mesa is enough of a re-envisioning of Half Life in that same way, and I don't see any reason why people would ignore it if they like what they see. If they don't like what they see, obviously they won't play it, but that has nothing to do with it being a remake.

How many 15 - 25 year olds buy doom or quake? Or is it the older crowd playing those games?

Who gives a shit about 15-25 year olds.

I'm playing it. It's free. What else do you want?

Time will tell if black mesa has been forgotten.

If the game had been released 6 years ago, it would probably be getting a lot more attention.
