I'll play the trial version if one exists. If combat is like KOTOR, I'll close my account. I HATED combat in the KOTOR games. I want to twist and turn my mouse and jump around and swing my saber in different directions with different styles like Outcast and Jedi Academy. Or I want to switch between a sniper rifle and E-11 leaning around corners and tossing grenades. I liked the KOTOR games, but combat was nearly insufferable.

this is going to be the one and only game that has a shot at some of WoWs audience.

Bioware is an amazing company.. and having known several of them playing in other MMOs they know what works and what doesn't.

this could be huge.. and putting it in this time frame means there were a ton of Jedi in the world still so that opens up alot of fun things in the story line with Jedis.

Seriously. This has the potential to be absoutely amazing. I think people just read "MMO" and knee-jerk all over the place

Same. I just hope there's a ton of single player content. If it's like... go into the room and start killing Sith over and over to gain experience, I am not way in hell playing it. If it's like, join up a mission to defend against attacking Tie Fighters (say later on in the game) then I'd be all over this.

The key to go a good MMO to me would be to really focus on single player content, with some multilayer content here and there.

For example, one mission would be single until a certain point, say a battle. The battles can be scheduled so that IT COULD be multiplayer. (instead of you versus the CPU, it could be you and a bunch of players). If somehow there are no other players, you just fight the battle on your own with computers that you have limited control over. Either you all win, or lose, and then you each continue back on a single path, until you hit the next multiplayer point (which would vary from person to person depending on what occurs in single player). You can also schedule multiplayers parts on your own with invites so you can get friends into it if they're at that same point in mission.

You can of course throw on the usual boring MMO parts, which would completely optional, and other than gaining experience, would have little benefit.

I have never played an MMO and I never will. Period. Therefore, I will not be playing this game. And it's too bad, because I really liked KOTOR. But I simply don't find MMOs even slightly fun. I played for about three hours on a friend's WoW account a few years ago and it completely sucked.

KOTOR is an RPG... so it's not too surprising that it uses RPG combat and not FPS combat.

Whats with all the crying? FUCKING BIOWARE IS MAKING THIS GAME!!!

I would be hesitant if any other company were making this as an MMO, but Bioware has proved themselves time and time again. This MMO is going to be awesome.

Because they are owned by EA now. Because the EA greed will affect them. Because their last few games were among the shortest games out there.

I wonder how many activations will get with SWTOR?

They've said there will be more story content than EVERY game they've put out so far COMBINED: BG1, 2 expansions, NWN 1,2 expansions, KOTOR1, 2, jade empire, mass effect and possibly a couple others like sonic dark brotherhood ;) I doubt the game will be short or lacking in content when they've had 12 writers working for YEARS.

This is the best time for this kind of experience. The MMO market has gotten stale, with most games being very similar to each other (WoW-clones or WoW in space). A really story-driven MMO in space would be a nice change. There are a few that claim to be story-drive but are really just grindfests like the rest :|

Why couldnt they make Republic Commando 2?

The first was excellent but it was half the length that it should have been.

Lucas Arts hasn't made or published a good game in forever...

Also, I don't have high hopes for a KotOR MMO. The MMO gametype requires a removal of everything that made KotOR good.

I told people right at WoW's release that this would happen, and nobody listened or believed me. Now we have an entire generation of MMOs trying to mimic WoW while MMOs released before WoW self destruct by trying to emulate WoW.

I don't find TOR that interesting, it comes off as a 'Me too!' grab. Bioware has talent for making good RPGs, but they've definitely slipped in their last couple of titles. Jade Empire and Mass Effect were far below prior efforts.

Dragon Age is Bioware's most interesting title in development right now.

K, so here's the promo-"trailer" thing they released:

http://www.gametrailers.com/player/43649.html

I didn't see or hear anything that sounds much different from other mmo's that I have no interest in playing. I'm starting to hope it flops horribly and they decide to never ever bother with an MMO again and go make a proper kotor3.

Pure fallacy. I have a very busy life, yet I still play WoW. I only play about once a week (sometimes not even that), but I have my character up to 64 and I've had fun, for the most part, doing it.

It's not the MMO's fault if you cannot play it without detracting form the other parts of your life, I would say that is more a character flaw than anything else.

Same. I have a couple friends who play WoW a lot. They used to play way too much, but in the past year or so they've taken on a totally casual play style that lets them play for fun without it taking over their whole life.

On the other side of the coin, I have another friend who got so addicted to Warcraft 3 that he had to basically stop playing all computer and video games unless he's doing so with friends in person. He's never played an MMORPG yet he got so into War3 that it had a similar effect on his social life.

I don't avoid MMORPGs because I'm afraid they'll dominate my life. I avoid them because I've tried playing them in the past and they just weren't fun. Not a single aspect of MMORPGs in general appeals to me, though obviously I understand that a lot of people love them. I like single player RPGs.

I have faith that Bioware can make a good game, but I have zero faith that the gaming community in general can form a Star Wars MMO community that you'd want to take part in.

I was a hardcore SWG player from launch up until their first attempt to copy WoW in early 2005. The game had its flaws, but the overall community was the worst part because their behavior took a dump on any kind of immersion you might have in a Star Wars themed MMO. The pull of a Star Wars MMO is the theme, so you don't have to be a role player to get a little turned off when that theme is ruined.

Am I the only person who dislikes all forms of multiplayer? I'd much rather play a good single player game with a good story.

I used to be that way until SWG came out. My first MMO. ... :brokenheart: I left after the NGE. I did eventually come back, though, primarily for JTL. I still  my Tie Advanced

LOL. True... But you probably don't even need the "Star Wars" qualification.

Like what?

Having a great impact upon the world (I.E. killing almost everyone one planet A or killing the god of people on planet B).
Having detailed relationships with party members (such as turning them evil or convincing them to fight you barefisted in lingerie)
Managing a whole team of abilities via the ability to pause and que actions

The whole thing that made KotOR great was feeling as if you were a great jedi with whom no one could mess with and the world was yours to manipulate. None of this is possible in an MMO.

But they see Blizzard with it's gold-shitting pet ape known as WoW, and companies realize that they want a pet ape too.

Right on.

Here are my problems with MMORPGs:

1. They all involve grinding. If I have to grind for even one minute, F that, I'm not playing. TONS of RPGs allow you to get through the game by just playing, without having to worry about getting enough XP.
2. They all focus way too much on loot. If I have to pay money or run a boss 100000000 times just to get decent gear, F that, I'm not playing. Nearly all RPGs allow you to easily complete the game using just whatever loot you happen to pick up along the way.
3. They all require you to party up with a bunch of people in order to complete everything. If I can't access the entire game without trying to figure out all this other stuff, F that, I'm not playing. Maybe I DON'T want to join a clan, or maybe I'm just not good enough for anyone to want me tagging along. I don't have endless free time to devote to figuring out exactly how I'm supposed to be part of a party, especially when the people judging me are probably a bunch of 12-year-old losers who will start furiously typing incomprehensible abbreviations at me when I don't do exactly what they want me to.
4. For that matter, if the game requires you to play online in order to play at all, F that, I'm not playing. I played Diablo II for a couple years without ever setting foot in an online room, and I liked it okay. Yes, it has a loot system and a grinding aspect to it that I don't like too much, but at the time I enjoyed it. And at the very least it allowed you to play offline if you wanted.
5. By their very definition, they have to be able to support hundreds of people in the game world. Therefore, the things you do are no longer the extraordinary things you'd expect from a video game character, but rather menial, everyday tasks that everyone is doing. Isn't the point of a video game to sort of escape from the daily grind of being exactly like everyone else? Why would you go home just to control a little virtual avatar of yourself collecting turkey wattles or Gnoll scrotums just like every other worthless loser in the world?

Did you watch the video? Looks like you get one well-developed companion.
