Chem sprays have some small range, and can be used for other than lethal results (allowing their use more often). However it takes a little training, you'll hit yourself as well (guaranteed), and not everyone is equally affected by them (or sometimes at all).

Every other weapon or combat option has similar pros and cons.

Uhhhhhh, IIRC almost every state allows you to carry some sort of knife. Switchblades are universally banned, but beyond that laws vary from state to state. In VA I could carry a 6" combat knife legally without a permit.

Delaware on the other hand only allows 3" folders.


Also, if you get a folder for defense, look for one with spring-assist. Meaning you have to open the blade 30 degrees before the spring takes over. They're technically not switchblades/automatic knives, but they're just as effective. Obviously fixed is best for defense, but it's hard to conceal unless you have a thick jacket.

In any case, get some training if you're going to use a knife. Otherwise you'll probably just end up cutting/stabbing yourself in the heat of the moment when you can't afford to think about what you're doing.

How do wands rate?

Well, being the prince of them I have an unfair innate advantage.

Man i dont think youre a pussy for being afraid of the city. Better safe than sorry I say. I say carry some pepper spray, and a regular ole run o the mill big 5 pocket knife. I carry a pocket knife most of the time, and I dont even live in a "big city" type setting. Also with pepper spray, I would say you cant go wrong. Very effective, and cheap, and completely legal. Use that first if you have to do anything.

Clearly you'll need an arsenal. Get nunchucks, a chainsaw and a bamboo cane for melee combat. Have a claymore and halberd with you for more midrange stuff, and be sure to travel with a 24 foot trebuchet for ranged combat. Shurikens make good projectiles, and there's no beating antipersonnel mines for setting booby traps. It would also be adviseable to get a pet that can come to your assistance when needed. I recommend a tiger (you may want to investigate local permit requirements on keeping a tiger for personal defense purposes).

Most murders in the city are drug or gang related, not a result of being mugged or something that you have a gun on you on the streets is going to help.

Plus, this isn't the movies. If a guy steps out of the shadows and puts a gun to your head, chances are you're gonna wind up dead if you try to pull your gun on him. Give him your wallet and call the cops, that's a lot safer than trying to shoot him.

Try reading the thread. I lived for 5 years on the border of one of the worst neighborhoods of Philadelphia. Last time I checked, Philly doesn't have a reputation of being a cupcake town. I grew up just outside of a small city with among the highest per capita murder rates in the nation. Don't tell me I've never been to a rough neighborhood. I also currently live downtown in another (admittedly safer) major city.

Obviously random acts of violence occur. However, they are RANDOM, they are EXTREMELY RARE on a per capita level, and as I already described above, having a gun on you usually won't help you anyway. The best defense is prevention, as I and several others already described.

I realize you're from Texas, and most Texans seem to think there is someone with a sniper rifle constantly pointed at your head, just WAITING for you to be away from your gun so they can kill you. So nothing I say is going to change your asinine, paranoid view. Not my problem, I'll continue running through the ghetto of west philadelphia at 1am with no weapons on me, and I'll continue surviving. That's all the proof I need.

oh, and before you start another tirade of links, remember that smaller city I mentioned I grew up in? My uncle was beaten to death in a random act of violence when he was 19 years old in that city, so again....don't preach to me like I don't know what I'm talking about.
