OP, you seriously need to relax. If stats are your thing, you should look them up for violent crumes committed per capita. You're not in danger!

I live in downtown St. Louis, its like worst than detroit.

Think the key is watching your back and detecting what can possibly turn into a bad situation and avoid as possible. Ex: don't walk through an alley if you see a bunch of people screwing around or smoking etc, go up the next block and go around. They may not be a threat, or they may be. But don't take the chance. And avoid walking alone at night, specially in big violent cities. Where I live I could get away with it but even then I avoid it. Then there's those random gun situations. you can have the biggest gun you can think of but if someone randomly takes out a gun and shoots you or someone snipes you from a building you're screwed either way. But at least you wont feel it. :p

I think it's better not to walk around in the city. Better choices would be an Armored Personnel Carrier or a modified SUV or limo. Bulletproof windows and drive flat tires are a must.

Don't forget the crazy powerful elevator and enormous office that would be required to go to work without leaving the APC. I wish you people would be more serious about this and try to help the OP like I did with my suggestions.

The OP is asking what weapons he should arm himself with to go out in public. I cannot take that question seriously.

How much do you plan to spend on a weapon? $20~30~50? save your money and carry a wad of singles around instead, if there is trouble pull out the $$$ and throw it and run for your life.

Should work, once you drive over your assailant a few times you can tase the corpse just to watch it twitch.

If you really need to, just carry without a permit. I don't know where you are, but if you are caught it might not be a big deal. Here it's not. And if you get caught carrying after you've had to use it, then it's not a big deal.

"Q: I was arrested four years ago for unlawfully carrying a weapon and the judge gave me deferred adjudication. Is this considered a conviction even though the charges eventually were dismissed?
A: Yes. The concealed gun law states that deferred adjudication will be treated as a conviction."

I believe it's a felony to carry unlicensed in Texas, at the very least it's going to affect you trying to get a CHL in the future. Please don't be ignorant about our laws, it's not a slap on the wrist.

That's dumb. Do you know how many times a city dweller hits the streets? A whole lot. I'm not carrying a gun around with me everywhere I go for the EXTREMELY unlikely chance I get mugged. Most murders in the city are drug or gang related, not a result of being mugged or something that you have a gun on you on the streets is going to help.

Plus, this isn't the movies. If a guy steps out of the shadows and puts a gun to your head, chances are you're gonna wind up dead if you try to pull your gun on him.

Throw that "true blue" crap out, I'm not anti gun, I'm just saying that having a gun on you while you walk the city streets is not going to raise your life expectancy.
You're full of shit if you think being prepared and ready to protect yourself is a waste of time. By your description of things you have never been to a truly bad part of town. Go take a stroll down MLK Blvd or Malcolm X Blvd in South Dallas. If you look like your avatar you're going to get:
A. Robbed
B. Your ass beat down
C. Killed.

Where I work now employees a large number of people for the not so nice areas of Dallas and they wonder why the # of cars getting broken into or stolen has sky rocketed and why the general crime rate of the area went up.
Dallas that even the beat cops won't go unless SWAT is with them.

Random acts of violence
Watch the video and learn These people are real folks. Believe it or not, there are people out there that do not care about you, your life or your family. They do not live in the happy go lucky candy coated world you live in and they WILL kill you given the opportunity.

Try reading the thread. I lived for 5 years on the border of one of the worst neighborhoods of Philadelphia. Last time I checked, Philly doesn't have a reputation of being a cupcake town. I grew up just outside of a small city with among the highest per capita murder rates in the nation. Don't tell me I've never been to a rough neighborhood. I also currently live downtown in another (admittedly safer) major city.

Obviously random acts of violence occur. However, they are RANDOM, they are EXTREMELY RARE on a per capita level, and as I already described above, having a gun on you usually won't help you anyway. The best defense is prevention, as I and several others already described.

I realize you're from Texas, and most Texans seem to think there is someone with a sniper rifle constantly pointed at your head, just WAITING for you to be away from your gun so they can kill you. So nothing I say is going to change your asinine, paranoid view. Not my problem, I'll continue running through the ghetto of west philadelphia at 1am with no weapons on me, and I'll continue surviving. That's all the proof I need.

oh, and before you start another tirade of links, remember that smaller city I mentioned I grew up in? My uncle was beaten to death in a random act of violence when he was 19 years old in that city, so again....don't preach to me like I don't know what I'm talking about.

So I don't understand why then you would think it's a bad idea to carry. If you know someone who was randomly murdered that could have saved themselves with a concealed handgun why wouldn't you get a license and carry?

Because restraining a person after he surrender because you pointed a loaded gun at him is easier to articulate than shooting and killing the subject. It'll also makes your life less complicated.

Already addressed that. I mentioned my personal experience to show that I'm aware these things can happen. However, I still realize that it's extremely random, and as I said above - in this situation, having a gun on you ain't gonna protect you.

I have no interest in detaining him/her... I want him/her to go away when I point a gun at them. Either leave the area or spirit intact or shrug off their mortal coil, their choice. I wouldn't shoot someone who is willing to leave voluntarily simply because I couldn't restrain them.

There is a lot of talk about randomness in this thread... risk is probability multiplied by consequence. While the probability is pretty low that you'll be involved in a situation of a truly random act of violence, the probability climbs higher when you consider being targeted for a robbery (or assult, or rape, etc). Even still, the probability is very low. That being said, the potential consequence is extraordinarily high. What is the chance that someone is going to walk into your home at night? Pretty low. So why do you keep your doors locked? Because the consequence of getting robbed, beaten, raped, and murdered is so high that it necessitates locking the doors.

Some people want to live with the probability, some people choose to give themselves a fighting chance if the situation should ever arise. Fortunately, we live in a country where both courses of action are protected by the Bill of Rights.

when i lived in SF, i found one of the best way to deal with aggressive
panhandlers was to ask them the BIG question - "are you a Mac person
or a Windows person ?"

i swear, it worked - most of the time.

admittedly, there was the one time i did get mugged, but
A/ i didn't see it coming (snuck up on from behind)
B/ never got a chance to get the question out !

A swordfish is the ultimate weapon; it works as a club for bashing, a sword for stabbing, and it's edible in case of emergency. There could be no better weapon.
