Depending on how you split them up, its either 1 book or 6 books. The publisher came up with splitting them into 3 total books. I think Tolkien wanted 1 big book.
Hard to recapture those moments reading them as a young highschooler. The Earthsea Cycle by Ursula Le Guin is another great series.

A character that has no actual point and isn't relevant to the story. Even Tolkien himself admitted to it.
Bombadil was a force of nature - not controlled, nor bound...
I believe he represented all natural life on the planet, or nature itself. He existed outside of any of the God's control and wasn't subject to their power.
No, he was a character created outside of Middle-earth entirely, never meant for the story. That is why he doesn't fit and the ring doesn't affect him. It really is that stupid.
