because they are poorly written.

well, I wouldn't really say poor. It's Steven king level. nothing interesting at all about the writing. plus, all of the characters are flat, one-dimensional caricatures.

the relevance of the story is achieved through the various themes and plot lines--not the characters. They are simply playing along.

much of this was fixed with Peter Jackson's excellent adaptation.
 
The sword which went to Thorin was Orcrist, and Sting was named by Bilbo. Anyone want to try me on Hobbit-Lotr-Silmarillion trivia? Only rule is, you have to know the answer without looking it up. Ready- go!
