Depending on how you split them up, its either 1 book or 6 books. The publisher came up with splitting them into 3 total books. I think Tolkien wanted 1 big book.

I never did read the whole set. Starting with the Hobbit, I read through the series twice, and bailed halfway into the last book. I really need to read the whole thing :^/

I dunno, I liked how it showed not everything could be under Sauron's power, albeit that shows he isn't invincible (minus the ring + volcano dealy), unsure if audiences like that.

correct me if i'm wrong but he and the river daughter actually supply the hobbits with sting, not aragorn? it's been 10+ years since i read it, but i really enjoyed the "supernatural" aspect of tom bombadil and the river daughter in the books

I believe he represented all natural life on the planet, or nature itself. He existed outside of any of the God's control and wasn't subject to their power.

No, he was a character created outside of Middle-earth entirely, never meant for the story. That is why he doesn't fit and the ring doesn't affect him. It really is that stupid.

The world that he'd offered in his works so many years ago still has life and a heart in it....

One of the best adventure / fantasy books ever written. However there are some who would like to consider it along side works of "literature" as in 'higher' literature. As good as it is it doesn't play in that field.
