Thanks for the memory tests. I was wondering if memory was the casue of a BF2 slowdown that is ocurring on my system.

The problem: On certain maps when I look in a certain direction the framerate drops to almost nothing (completely unplayable). At all other times the game is running VERY smooth. If i look away from that direction the framerate goes back to normal. This problem seems to be intermittent, meaning it doesnt always happen on a given map. Im thinking amount of players on the server at the time may be the factor?

All settings are on high ( except shadow thingy, which default to medium)
1024 x 768, 2xAA

AMD 64 3400+
asus av8
6800gt
1 gig ram, kingston

Well, it turns out I bought a defective motherboard. No testing for a few more days until I can get one that works...

some results:
=========

I upgraded from 2x512 Kingson Hyper X ram 400 mhz to 4x512 all of same ram. Put this with a 3.2E p4 and ABIT IC7-G Board. Video is 6800 GT AGP 256 MB (OC), the ram definitely made a BIG difference for me. I also am using the trick to play the game at 1280x1024 resolution on 4XAA and 4xAF on the "high" overall setting. FPS went from probably 25-30 FPS to about 40-50 FPS and much smoother, loads faster. In task manager it reports BF2 is using about 770 MB of ram on my system.

One other thing I did was a trick I read to delete all of the shader files in MyDocuments/Battlefield2/mods/Bf2/cache (i think that was folder) that seemed to help too.

shecky: that sounds alot like stuff that was happening on my system before I upgraded the ram in my machine. it effectively removed any trace of that behavior from the game for me.

i dont know how accurate this is but i have ... well see my sig .. and have no problems what so ever running 4xAA and 8xAF at 1280*1024 with all eye candy maxed out ..

the only problem is when i exit the game ... now that takes a toll on my RAM, as the background music still likes to play even though the game has fully exited, i can solve this by keep pressing F5 .. weird

I retract my previous statement, about my 7800GTX getting rid of the stuttering. I got the full game now, and it stutters pretty badly for the first 30 seconds or so when I join a new game. Then every so often it does. Like zooming in, it will pause for a second, then zoom sometimes.

Ill be adding another gig, as soon at monarchpc gets my ram in stock again. Hate to lose 1T, but Id rather have smooth gameplay.

You guys with two sticks of 512 or just going to have to bite the bullet and get two sticks of 1GB. I ran into the same situation and it wasn't worth running at 2T. I could run the RAM at 400MHz Dual Channel but couldn't get around the 2T which was a big bandwidth hit. Also, if the two sticks of 512 have good timings then you can probably get a good price for them on ebay. I sold my two 512 sticks (Corsair 3200LL) for $150 on ebay. That was a lot more then I thought I was going to get.

Also, going from 1GB to 2GB did increase map loading speeds and smoothed out the laggy menus. No increase in FPS as some have stated.

Cant do it. There are no 1gig sticks that can run DDR 500 (250fsb) at Cas2 2-2-6-1T. Which is what my 2x512 sticks are doing right now. Ill lose 1T, and still run Cas2 2-2-6, with 4x512. When they come out, Ill get 1gig sticks.

I hope you guys worried about 1T vs 2T are Intel users because there are threads all over showing that on a AMD64 system, that the differance between the 2 are like 2-3% with benchmarks. If all you really care about is playing your video game not looking like a Slideshow or flying a plane and hitching and waking up dead, then GET 1.5 or 2 gigs!
It is by far the cheapest fix vs getting a 7800!
I haven't tested and Never will test 'framerate' Your human eye cant detect anything faster than 30 fps...all that really matters is that 'I dont appear to lag' I dont care if im 80 fps or 31 fps....it all 'looks' the same.

If you dont wanna loose 1T on a 64 system so you can compress RAR files .5 seconds faster than me over a 2 minute period, be my guest. Sometimes you gotta forget the stats and just realize, "does my game 'lag'" and spending 79$ online for a gig on Corsair Value select is by far the most effeciant fix for us BF2 players..

Oh don't open up this egg again...

I'm thinking of biting the bullet and snapping up another gig for BF2... Damn DC and it's atari graphics... put it plays so nicely... OMG frogger is shooting me...

I would be interested in that macro if you still have it.

I might be interested in the macro too, if I can ever get a motherboard that works. I just received my second ABIT Fatal1ty AN8 SLI today and it isn't posting either. I think the Fatal1ty is the motherboard. GRRRRR!

Here's a template file including the macros and a custom toolbar (only works when the file is named MemMonGraph.xls though).

Right click, save target/link as...

Then open it in Excel and enable the custom MemMonGraph toolbar (embedded into the xls file) if it doesn't show up for you already (tools->customize). First click the MemMonTable button and specify the MemMon-outputted log. Then just press MemMonGraph and it will present to you a graph of the data. If you have any problems let me know. The macro is set up for Win2K/XP only for this moment (it puts page file in to the table, not virtual memory (à la Win9x)).

I'm running a 2700+, 1GB Corsair Value, and a 9700 Pro - no lag, no stutter.

Actually I read a lot of reviews of it and talked to a lot of people before buying. The good reviews is one of the reasons I bought it. And I just found out if wasn't the motherboard that was the problem. It was the video card (a BFG 6800GT). I thought it was the motherboard because it wouldn't post. I talked to a lot of people over at the ABIT, including some Moderators. They all said I had a bad board. Unfortunately I didn't have a spare PCIe video card to swap in to check to see if that was the problem. When the second board arrived with an idential problem, that's when I got suspicous, so I had the local computer shop try another video card and it worked fine. They put my card into another rig and it wouldn't boot. So I've RMA'd the card and should have a replacement by Tuesday.

Glad to have this one figured out finally.

I think the worst problem I ever had was one with intermitten memory. It would fail about every two weeks. I finally tracked it down when I ran a thorough memory test for several days. Very annoying. Took about a month to find.

Well.. ordered another gig of Redline PC4000. Had to go with newegg though. :( I hate to use them anymore. Monarch was out, and Googlegear didnt have the gig pack, just the single sticks. Which probably would have worked just as well, but I like the packs better.

Why do you hate to use newegg?

I dont hate them, just dont use them nearly as much as I used to. I think they've gone down hill. Because they charge shipping on most everything, when they didnt used to. $4 shipping for a cabele? C'mon now. Their prices are not as good as they were. And they gouge on items that they know are good sellers. But the biggest reason is, they now charge tax to TN. We have a 9.25% rate, so any thing over $100 or so, is never cheaper there. They were a full $25 more than Monarch for me, because of shipping, and tax.

I have to use them (NewEgg) or zipzoomfly

They charge shipping to Hawaii which kills me, like my Lian Li case and memory, but Zip didn't have it.

They are top notch tho, got my stuff within 3 days.
