After 5 hours of playing (where tf did the time go?) I'm back to report... the hitching is gone! Did not affect my frame rates (still 70avg), but there's no skipping anymore. That said, I did get this new error message a couple times: There is a problem with your network connection... it would freeze up completely for a split second. anyone know what that's about? Do I need to fill it with 2gb? ;)

Conclusion: 1.5gb ram >>>>>> 1.0gb (for these settings: 1024x768, light & shadows to low, everything else medium. 2x AA)

i read an article, your eye doesnt pick up past 60 i beleive but they still argue it cant for 30 and beyond, what you notice in game is dips below 30, so if it averages 40fps, it means nothing if you dip below 30.

I get the same problem, but im blaming this on my ISP, but since your getting it, could it be someting else?

im sure some programmer can do it.

You would have to take into account that the calculations would have to be done on every single frame. Adding a massive amount of overhead on an already contrained processes.

One of the benefits of buffers is being able to draw one frame in a buffer and draw the next frame in another and swap out when the final rendering is complete on the 2nd picture. As opposed to rendering one frame, deleting it, and rendering the next frame from scratch. Adding a motion blur would require a third set at the minimum. That would have to determine the motion differences through some sort of algorithm, and fromt he comparision draw out a third frame to be processed. Set it as the next frame, and draw another frame, compare, inject... etc.

It seems like you would accomplish 30%+ more overhead just so you could possibly get a picture that should be able to run at lower FPS with a similiar or degraded IQ.

I personally get headaches when I look at monitors at 60Hz or lower. Once I put up a refresh rate to 70Hz+ I don't experience any discomfort.

I know early on when I first started to get into 3D games, I went from a Stealth III to a TI4200 I noticed a big jump in FPS and the percieved jerkiness in the game went away.
Though that's just observations on what I can determine. I'm fairly sure certain people have more or less sensitivity.

I put in another 1GB of Corsair Value (2x512) for a total of 4x512mb and the game seems smooth to me....

The funny thing is I thought my memory speed would go down to DDR333 with all memory slots filled on my A8N-SLI and my Winchester 3000+ but according to my bios and cpu-z I am still running at DDR400... Go figure

I get it too. On every server. It's messing up my stats, cause for some reason, kills and deaths count when you disconnect, but your points don't. Oh, and it counts as a loss too. :(

I'd like to blame it on my ISP, but it's been happening all day long for the past two days. It really sucks. :|

EDIT: Is there a reason why the highest res I see is 1280x960? I forced the game to run at 1280x1024, but is there a way to check if it's actually running at that res? (via a console command or something).

Thanks.

Nice work but the I think thats just a poorly written game. 2gb of ram needed is a joke.

^ I too have been getting connection problems. Twice, its told me there was a problem, once when we had 3 tickets, to their 2. HOW ANNOYING. None of my stats got saved, after a 45min map. My connection was fine, I loaded up a diff server right after that. Its happened to me three times, and I get dropped from the server. But none as annoying as the first time.

Yup so its not just me then, for some reason every time when i have that problem i ALWAYS die because i have nooooo clue whats going on and i die.

I cant fly planes, or helicopters. sometimes the black hawk since it lumbers so doesnt crash straight away. So im missing out half the game.

So guys any ideas why this is happening? Ill go post on other forums and get back to you guys.

That is fine, all BF games have been like that. No worries.

There's a memory leak hotfix, does this fix any memory USAGE issues? or is the game just that much a memory hog? I just bought 2 gigs of memory with my new PC, I hope it didn't go to waste (although when I get an X2 some day it certainly won't be wasted :D)

Hi Guys,

what about this, the servers we are connecting to are under spec'ed and the dam things are slowing down the works. From what i have seen any server that allows 64 players seem to on a regular basis have spikes in the game! There are very few i have played on that never spike.

I have 2 gig of ram and a x800 video card, average frame rate is about 70 -80

I don't think this game needs 2gb of RAM to be quite honest. I play with only 1gb of Corsair ValueSelect in 64 player servers and it's fine. When I initially get into the game, I don't really do anything other than let it start loading stuff up. It will hitch for maybe a minute at most, then the game runs perfectly fine. I also make sure I don't have any memory hogging applications open in the background before I play. My system specs are:

A64 3200+
Asus A8N-E
2x512 Corsair ValueSelect
BFG 7800GTX OC
74gb WD Raptor

Thanks.

The way I checked to make sure if I was running 1680*1050 was to take a screenshot, then look at the properties of the screenshot file.

I felt the game was very playable with only 1gig, I added a gig today during lunch break. In the short time I had. It seems to be a little faster loading, nothing substantial. It did feel all around smoother to me, but it could just be the 2GB excitement high. The biggest different I noticed was when I quit the game, I no longer have a garbled screen for those few seconds.. exiting was almost instantaneous. If I learn anything new I'll post here later. Contrary to sig, I'm currently running 4x512MB of Corsair XLPT at 2-3-3-6 @ 225 (more OC'ing later). CPU multiplier @ 16 resulting in 3.6GHz.

ok guys now the question is...set af from the bf2 menu or the control panel? I hear if you set it in the control panel it will not perform as well?
Anyone confirm this? cause i could crank up the AA as well then from that menu.

running specs listed below, currently i am 1280x1024 via launch prompt-2xaf via menu in game. i assume any hitching is server related because it runs very VERY smooth. frames are usually 40+ wish i could average around 60...

I dont know how thats true-all of my chugging went away with an additional gb of ram-those are also AVERAGES, so it may not display how it can chug when only using 1gb of ram?

I experienced first had a much smoother performance. I am super anal and could tell right away.

Been following this thread and similar ones on other forums and thier all about having two gigs of ram. I never had a problem with the demo so I went and tested it again the other day. I'm playing at 1600x1200,4xAA,8xAF, everything at high except lighting(medium). I played a couple 64 player games and it only hicuped twice, ounce just after starting and then a minute or two later, after that it ran great. Hicups were just a split second, nothing major. PC configurations all being different, two gigs is what some may need. I don't have a problem with my one gig, for now.

I'd just like everyone to know how my BF2 experience has changed now that I've gone from 2x512@238DDR (2-3-2-10) to 2x1GB @ 186DDR (3-4-4-10).

With just one gig, I would get stuttering anytime there was lots of action, spawning at new area, etc.

Now with two gigs even at much slower ram speeds (both timings and MHz), I am COMPLETELY smooth (even on 64 player) and my load times have dropped almost in half!! (which allows me to get vehicle of my choice) ;-)

This is my $.02 on the subject of 1 or 2 gigs for Battlefield 2....

BTW my system is as follows:

A64 Winchester 290X9= 2.61GHz
2x1GB OCZ Value (OCZ4002048V3DC-K) <--- crap BTW
MSI NF3 Neo2 Plat
eVGA 6800 GT 397MHz/1.13GHz

Not quite.. The other day My RAM usage exceeded 1.6GB after a game. It typically only goes to 1.4 for me but it apperently can go highier.

BTW I am running 1920x1200 everything on high 0x AA. Sound at medium quality. I also turn every other program off as I possibly can.
