The inclusion of the BF2 expansion packs in that patch is probably one of the best, and rarest move that I've seen EA do in years. It should rejuvenate the interest in the game by "ex-players", and should also keep the current ones happy. The down side is obviously for the consumers who bought those packs, they surely feel cheated now, but they shouldn't have expected anything else coming from EA, it really is one of those circumstances where the misfortune of some do the happiness of others.

It's not the first time though, of course, that content from expansion packs are made free in patches coming months or years after that content, but it's not common. I think it will be the same with Fallout 3 when the GOTY Edition is released, which should include all DLCs and will be priced at $50, too bad for those who bought all five separately plus the game itself. Patience truly is a virtue isn't it.

Really glad I don't have to use a CD/mini-image for this mess any more. I wonder...does Special Forces still require the CD?

It shouldn't , but I bet you will still have the separate shortcut. SF launches basically like a mod. So if the base bf2.exe doesn't require the disk then SF shouldn't either.

The only decent EF map is the Great Wall, the other one's are airfests. The AF maps are really good and I enjoyed playing them.

I bought both Euro Forces and Armored Fury and I would be shocked if even a single person that bought them would be upset about this. There aren't any servers running those maps anymore, so all of us owners of the booster packs can't play them anyway. Including them as required downloads means we'll get renewed life out of them.

Also, it's been years since they were released... For Halo 3, you buy their map packs for $9.99 (which is just three measly maps, nothing else. The BF2 packs had new maps and new units/vehicles/weapons/factions). But then the Halo 3 maps would be made free for all users only a couple months later. But again, that never bothered me since making them free (and Halo also made them required) means that you actually get to play them in the regular rotation of maps.

This is a great move by EA.

Wow, I'm surprised. Great move by EA. BF2 is still one of my favorite games, and I'm looking forward to playing the expansions maps... without having to get the DVD out first.

Mate, i dont mean to sound an asshole but Call of Duty's weapons are railguns disguised with WW2 models and skins.

The whole point is to spam and let you hit everything. Weapons have no real balance and it makes gameplay a horse fuck frenzy.

Also makes it easier to shoot with a gamepad.

Hopefully this patch won't cause an epic memory leak issue, that will force the whole community to reinstall the game to install the replacement patch... again.

I am very impressed.
Good work EA! Yay!!!!
I have always liked this game, and they kept releasing free maps and patches. Good support. And all free. Including the servers.
Wow.
Best value I have ever had from a game.
Still playing it since release.

I'm re-installing BF2 right now in anticipation. I don't remember the last time I installed a game from CDs. It seems a lot slower installing from three discs than one.

You can extract each CDs and place them in folders as Disc1, Disc2, Disc3 and run the Setup in Disc1 and it will work. Thats how I have it (I too have them on CDs and took forever)

I bought the CD version.. but downloaded the DVD version. Burned that copy, and just used it instead. Didnt want to pay the $10 price difference.

Luckily for me I got the DVD version, I will install it tonight. I think I haven't played BF2 in nearly a year, if not actually more than a year. I might end up uninstalling it a few days later though, but coming back at it for some time is certainly something I will appreciate, and it will allow me to try the content of the booster packs which I had never tried nor bought.

So quick question on the install...

Is this patch an add on after 1.41 or a totally fresh patch?

At work and can't check

Thanks,
Lee

You must patch to 1.41 first. If you have everything BF2, the full install order is now:

Install BF2
Install Special Forces
Install patch 1.41
Install patch 1.5
