maybe I'm wrong... I'll try disabling it and messing with the channels and see what combination is best

Different cards put more load on the CPU than others. Here's a link to a comparison of sound cards and quality and effect on fps.

Of course, I'm having a blast with Radeon 64 and Santa Cruz on a P4 2.4.

wow... had no idea it made that much of a difference

I'll have to mess around and see what works best for me

I also just found out that I had my Video Apeture size in my Bios only at 32 instead of the full 64 DOH!! so that should help some

turning off the music and lowering the sound quality a bit did seem to help. Now if only there was a tweak to help my aiming :)

lol yeah but that be called Hacking and we don't want that :p

although really if anyone came out with a hack for better aiming everyone would get it and it'd probably just become a patch

Playing Wake Island demo, my score was 8 - 2 - 9 - 159. What does that mean? It flashes by so quick I can't figure out what the symbols mean.

I bound Tab to showscores. I think it shows Kills Deaths, flag captures, and something else.

RTFM :)

If one team sits around and does nothing, or is really bad, then it will be a short round, for sure. Nothing can prevent that -- increasing timelimits nor tickets will help.

Here's the settings:

game.setServerSoldierFriendlyFireOnSplash 0
game.setServerVehicleFriendlyFireOnSplash 0
game.setServerIP 204.248.53.42
game.setServerPort 14567

If you want one of those changed let me know and I'll take it into consideration...

Edit: The next time the server is started up it will support 36 players, reduced from the 42.. I think 42 is a bit too much for the T1s.

Edit #2: Just rebooted server and am trying 36 players..

I think the ars server has the tickets default at 300. That seemed to make nice long battles. For anyone else wondering, the up arrow lets you out of those little invasion boats on the island maps (took me an hour to figure it out). Mechanic + tank = teh best evar. :)

I'd move it to 300, but for some reason it always DOUBLES what the setting is in the server config file. So even though right now it's set to 100, most of the time it decides to throw out 200 tickets per team (or more for the invading team). I'll boost it up a little bit though and see if that helps any; maybe 125 (yielding 250 tickets).

I might lower the player limit yet again, too. The server itself is handling the load exceptionally well (server FPS in the dedicated console never goes below 30 and is often at 55+ and stays there). The only server that ran 24 players would go down into the low teens in fps since it was under so much load. Feel free to send suggestions via PM so server config stuff doesn't invade this thread :p

Also remember that the server won't be up during the day on weekdays, but it will be up after ~7PM.

In regards to detail settings and lag, I seem to get about the same frame rate no matter what. 1024x768 full detail is only a little bit slower than 800x600 low detail. The changing of sound does seem to help a little bit, though.

Another performance tip for you guys...
If you go into your sound options go to the 2nd page and enable hardware acceleration. Helped out with my sblive! value... kinda funny how sound settings effect video too heh.

I wish this game was OpenGL and not DirectX though... would probably run better. :p

Anybody know if you get points for performing class specific acts? I've been playing a lot as a medic an in battles where I heal a lot of people I accumulate massive amounts of points without even killing more than one or two enemies. Same goes for the engineer.

Also, what sort of points do you get for claiming an outpost?

One more while we're at it :) What do the little silver and gold stars all the way to the right of your scores represent?

Yes you get points for doing class specific acts. The medic gets points for healing, the engineer for repairing. Not sure about the others exactly how they work out. Suspect ths scout gets bonuses for helping out artilery.

You get 1 point for claiming an outpost I think.

The gold star represents having the most points for a single round. Silver is second, bronze is third. They stay with you until the map changes/server crashes or you leave the server.

BTW, I so prefer being the medic. Good gun, get to heal yourself and others. Definitely my favorite.

Yep, medic class for me as well. I just feel like I contribute more that way. I'm kind of a piss poor aim with this game, and my dog fighting skills are pretty weak. With the medic I can try and heal people saving tickets for the team by preventing them from dieing.

I didn't like the way the sniper rifle worked. I never could seem to kill anyone in one shot, head shot or not with it. That, and it seems like snipers have some sort of big sign over their head that says "SHOOT ME". Just never could find a good spot on most maps to stay alive longer than a couple shots. That was mainly playing against the computer in instant combat missions.

Yeah aiming in this game is a bit different than say CS. You actually have to lead people, more so than I originally thought. There is a very obvious "hit" motion the models go thru in the game when you actually hit them. Of course you have to be close enough to see it, which could be a problem.

The sniper rifle is a tad underpowered. I would like to see all torso shots be one-shot kills, along with the already done head/neck shots. I generally can get 3-4 kills with the sniper rifle before someone gets smart and runs at me with an assault character. Certain maps are much better with sniper rifles than others. For example, Stalingrad is too small with too many obstructions for a good sniper rifle. But Battleaxe is good with the long sight lines (just be sure to move around).

this game looks so sweet on the 9700.

We should start a AT clan.

It looks sweet on my GF4 Ti4200/64 so I can imagine it would only be better on the 9700Pro considering that card costs 3x what I paid.

There is no official AT clan. If you want to show that you are from ATOT, just put [AT] or [ATOT] either at the beginning or end of your nickname.

Two questions:

1. When flying, how do I get rid of the cockpit? I want nosecam.
2. As medic, how do I heal myself?

I play as SmackTard, so my nick would change from SmackTard to [AT]SmackTard. Unlike most SmackTards, I'm decent. My last score of 2 kills and 8 deaths was because I sunk both ships singlehandedly, while my idiot allies fought amongst themselves for the planes.

Equip medkit. Press fire button. Hold button down until healed. You have to be on the ground, stationary, and not next to another injured player for it to work.

Yeah, I think I've seen you on the server. I'm on there as MurderDeathKill.

To answer your questions:
1. Hit F9. This will either give you the cockpit view or the nosecam. Hit F9 again to switch between those.
2. Select the medkit (weapon #5). Press "Fire" to heal yourself or the person in your target if they need healing. Same goes for engineer, except the wrench is weapon #6.

EDIT: Oh yeah as vi_edit mentions. If you are standing near a teamate that is injured, you will heal them first rather than heal yourself.

I have been [ATOT]CPA for the last couple of weeks, and I have to say I have been doing the ATOT name some good out there in Battlefield 1942 land :D

I will try to get on geekish's server tonight. Neomits be there, cause I'm going to shoot that plane of yours down.

BTW, has anyone played the Fuji Island map. It's awesome.

Fuji Island map? Which one is that?

My favorites so far: Stalingrad, Battleaxe, Tobruk, and one more I can't remember the name of, but I think its the Market one.

Fuji island is great...but hard! I think all the japanese vs US maps are tough to win. Either its tough for the Japanese or its tough for the US.

Man I felt like Giovanni Ribsi's character in 'Saving Private Ryan' yesterday. I was a medic and was healing a guy who was a tank soldier because he was the only one near by when a huge tank was coming. Right after I healed him from 15% health I walked away and hear him get shot by a sniper. I got pissed and ran at the tank with a grenade and it ran me over.
