I kind of like the Battle of the Bulge. Command points that can't be taken over and just two flags that are in constant heated battle.

One thing I find very cool about the maps is that some of them are lopsided which is true to history.

Battle of the Bulge - very lopsided to the Axis
Iwo Jima - Allies

And then there are the maps that are very even.

Stalingrad, Battleaxe, etc...

Makes game play more interesting. And if you want a challenge, be sure to play the weaker side for the maps.

I have failed my self-discipline..

Saw 1942 at the store.. and I used my AMEX on it to make it my first purchase..

Atleast I had a gift certificate to offset the cost.. :D

Ah, so that was you. TinyTony here. That game started out really slow. Just me and you at first I think. Great map, really needs good team play though. Anyone considering gamevoice for this little AT clan we're rounding up?

Oh, and what's [D|H]? Are you double-timing us?

Iwo Jima was really hard as Allies. During a respawn the server kicked me over to Axis. I was pissed. (But I took gold in that game.) That's another map that really, really needs good teamwork for the Allies.

It's the T1s.. not the server. It's because of saturation of the T1 circuit you're going through (we have 4 circuits, 2 from each provider, QWest/XNet). Most of the QWest routed people get higher pings around this time of the night because those 2 T1s are used more. Unfortunately nothing can be done about it unless the feed is updated to something like a fractional DS3 (which isn't going to happen) :( If you guys can get someone to host that has a better Internet feed I would recommend that. I ping fine because I go through the XNet T1s, as do most of the people getting the lower pings. If enough people complain about the lag I'll probably have to not be the ATOT host anymore and just do it for my website/friends. There's nothing worse than a laggy server.

Just a guild a few friends and I from town made up a couple years ago. If I wasn't in it, I'd use [AT] for sure :) I've been here for a while.

hmmm

I'll be going to school here in a few days but its a difference of only 100 miles would that change who I'm going through to your server?

Probably not, but it might. The Internet feed the server is on also has some routing issues with certain people who connect to it, and sometimes, all. A better Internet connection is needed, but it probably isn't going to happen, at least anytime soon that I know of.

Edit: Changed my answer.. didn't read your post correctly.

What sort of hardware do I need to run a dedicated server? If it doesn't take much, I can host the server.

Okay that explains why my ping went from being decent (125 or so) to absolute crap (400). Anyone else got the bandwidth for this?

Use hardware sound. I was playing w/o it using my SBLive! card and after 5 min the sound was horrible and crackling.

It's official :this is a very good game. I haven't had this much fun since CS... and the CBF Q3 server before that.

Things I've found:
1. Engineer rules, except when you're getting overrun by tanks in the desert and on the d-day map.
2. airplanes are good for transportation to a tank spawn flag, but not much else. eject and parachute is fun.
3. tanks and flag capture are key to winning the top three spots
4. go where the bad guys ain't and get the flag

I'm considering hosting the server if we can keep it fairly low profile, and if we have enough support to do it.

I already physically host heatware, why not host this as well. Maybe I can get a title as "Offical Anandtech Hosting Boy" :)

geekishthoughts, I couldn't find your server last night. Was it up? Do I have to go to Gamespy to get to it or will it just show up inside the game's server list (are they one in the same?).

This would be cool.... just password protect it and that should keep most smacktards out. Unfortunetly I don't get a great ping on GeekishThought's server so I'm all for another one

I don't know if he has the ports for Gamespy open or not. Just got to add IP and type in the IP and click join and it should find it.

Also remember he takes it down during the day I'm not sure starting at what time though

If somebody has a Slot one Pentium 3, 700 megahertz or better that they want to donate or sell for real cheap, I'll host. I don't think the celery 400 I have is going to cut it.

I'd make a stand alone box that does nothing other than host bf1942.

Not sure, unless if the server process crashes it's usually up every night after ~7PM CST. The BF1942 Dedicated Server executable isn't very stable, it likes to crash about every 12 hours or so. This has been the case for all of the different hardware configurations I've tried (even a brand new Dell Dimension 4500 2.4GHz box, the server now). So anyone who hosts the server will have some fun rebooting it all the time :) For some reason, setting it up as a service within windows and having the service reboot upon a crash does not work either! Err yeah, sorry for the rant. Not sure why you couldn't see the server.
