And did he really say "When you have no record to run on, you make people afraid to vote for your opponent"?

I know he meant this as a jab at McCain, but since he mentioned this after spending the first half of his speech doing nothing but attacking McCain, it seems it is more applicable to him.
Yea, that is going to be thrown back at his face big time.

The biggest one was social security for me (as i am 25 and won't get a penny):

something along the lines of "gambling on retirement" on McCain's and Republican's goal/idea to opt-out/privitize social security. Well if you call a 401k and an IRA a gamble then I want to gamble on my retirement. The only gamble, and against the house, is for young people like me to pay into a system that wont give me a damn penny--SS.

Why is it that:
Social security costs me 12.5% of my wages should be ca. 26% of my retirement income and
10% of my wages put into a 401k/IRA provides the rest of my retirement income.
FYI Those numbers are taken from Fidelity's retirement planner.

What is the TRUE gamble?

He promised everything besides a new born puppy for every American tonight. Great speaker, but I don't see him even meeting 10% of his promises.

What are going to be the "specifics" in McCain's speech next week?

"I'm a PEE-OHH-DUBYA..."

"My five years in a VEE-ATE-NAM-EASE prison camp..."

"My friends, it's time for some STRATE talk..."

"There will be MOHR wars..."

If some of you are praying your lord-and-savior John McBush will bring specifics next week, don't hold your breath.

you've got to be in the bottom five posters in P&N... seriously, just insane. wtf does that have to do with anything other than your usual hackery? McCain doesn't even have an accent.

I thought it was a solid speech. Most of it was similar to past speeches, but he did go into some specifics on energy policy, which I think is going to be the most important federal issue in the next term.

Watching a few hours of the PBS coverage tonight, I have to say the highlight was when they invited some 'average Joes' to the podium. The woman from North Carolina was entertaining and really effective.

That would alienate the vital cat-lover voting bloc.

You don't realize that Barack Obama is secretly Albus Dumbledore.

Even the cynics, who will tear down all of Obama's ideas, can't tear down the fact that this rookie senator is a better politician than a 26 year Washington veteran.

McCain will struggle to fill the seats for his VP announcement tomorrow in Ohio. I heard they are organizing buses to bring people in from other states. He can't seem to rally his base, and that fact alone will sink McCain in November.

Obama has a 50-state campaign that is hell-bent on signing up record numbers of new voters. McCain is struggling to get Republicans out of bed on election day.

After 8 years of watching Bush bumbling through a speech, that was quite amazing. Reagan demonstrated the power of effective communication, and I think that in itself is one of Obama's greatest strengths, and will be his most effective political weapon.

This most certainly wasn't Obama's best performance-- it's not in the same league as Clinton and Reagan, not even close. In fact, his jilted, halting delivery tonight at times reminded me of--dare I say it-- GWB himself. At least Obama doesn't have a funny squint or have a problem pronouncing difficult words like "nuclear".

Clinton brought the house down the other night, and I believe made a better case for an Obama presidency than Obama did himself.

But that opening video was still pretty awesome...

Are you kidding? He had maybe 3 little hiccups in a long speech. He's not Jesus H. Christ.

Generally speaking, most people don't have a problem with civil unions that would provide for visitation rights being mentioned, and which Obama alluded to tonight. And if it stopped there, people like me wouldn't have a problem with it.

But it doesn't stop there. The gays want me to accept "marriage" as meaning one man+one woman AS WELL AS two men, or two women which is a violation of natural law, nevermind the religious component that I have a problem with as well. This will in turn eventually lead to adoption of children by gay couples which I absolutely oppose in every sense.

There is the slippery slope to consider here and if I could be confident it would end at civil unions, I might be more amenable to a compromise position.

Tell me, o wise one... if Barak clearly outclasses McCain, and McCain is just the second coming of George W. Bush-- who is clearly the most unpopular lame duck president in modern history, then why are Barak and McCain in a dead heat for the presidency? Shouldn't Barak be ahead by 20 points at this point given the circumstances?

So, you're criticizing Obama on the fact that he won't realize 10% of what he promised. That's the case for every politician.

I don't see how he can sell his ideas if he doesn't add a little bit more than there is.

Honestly, I busted out laughing when I read his post. It is such blatant trolling I couldn't help it.

No, I'm not kidding... I'm not referencing his "hiccups" or miscues, but rather his overall purposeful but somewhat slow delivery.

And Hitler filled the Beerhalls...what's your point?

I'd rather hear a speech about ideas and policy that has 1 person in the room than another of Obama's vague "change...change...no details...blah blah blah...change...hope" speech that he has given time and time again with 85k cool-aid drinking lemmings in a stadium

Sorry, but which "Natural Law" does that violate?
At the end of the day, ALL mariage goes against "Natural Law"...meaning that marriage is a function of culture and is not part of any inherent instinct.

😕 How many Republicans were in that election?

My God, why didn't you say so? You'll be right at home watching the Republican convention next week.

a few thoughts

Obama has done nothing? How many people are a party's nominee for President after such a short time? Beating Clinton? No small feats. What had GWB accomplished before he was president?

All national convention acceptance speeches are full of promises, and in the end many items are not delivered on - nothing new there.

His speaking form reminded someone of GWB? You are either horribly racist or completely ignorant if you think that. You could play this speech backwards and it would sound better than just about anything W has uttered.

It's going to come down to the debates prof john? Please - if it came down to debates in any election your boy Georgie wouldn't be in office right now.
