He is one hell of a good speech giver.

But once you get into the details there were a lot of things that you can question. Need to find a copy of the speech and then can break it down, but there were perhaps half a dozen to a dozen things he said that can be out right questioned.

There are always "things that you can question" in a candidate's speech, particularly when you don't like him.

and it is always "effing amazing" if you love him.

I watched the speech...wasn't amazing to me...

His speech is not what I think is important...anyone can read a speech...it's the off the cuff remarks, it's the question from a non-planted town-hall questioner or a question in a debate...that's where Obama is weakest, and that is what people will remember long after this speech has been forgotten...

^ it is going to come down to the debates for sure.

Obama might have won some people over and made people feel ok about voting for him tonight. But it is going to come down to the debates before they really decide. And that might not be so good for Obama based on the way he performed at Sadleback. He is just one "that is above my pay grade" type remark away from losing.

After 8 years of watching Bush bumbling through a speech, that was quite amazing. Reagan demonstrated the power of effective communication, and I think that in itself is one of Obama's greatest strengths, and will be his most effective political weapon.

What was the deal about gays and lesbians not being able to visit there partners in the hospital?

They're not married so they don't have that right.

it's true, they can't if they're not married... but obama doesn't support gay marriage.

It was pretty damn good.

As for specifics, I counted something like 20 specific policy decisions. Did I hear the exact legislature as it will be presented in Congress? No, but I know the direction he wants to take the country.

I also like how he turned most of McCains attack against him and threw them back in his face. He finally threw some punches. Bravo.

Heck no, the Koran takes a poor view of that kind of stuff.

I'm confused. Are you saying that only married people can visit each other in the hospital?

Actually this is to a great degree missing the point.

Its because they often lack the legal right to do so, which is basically always provided by Civil Unions, which Obama does support for gay people.

Yes. If the injured party is in the ICU or in limited contact w/ the outside world for some reason.

Not his best speech, but powerful nonetheless. I liked the way he tossed down the gauntlet about patriotism.

What are going to be the "specifics" in McCain's speech next week?

"I'm a PEE-OHH-DUBYA..."

"My five years in a VEE-ATE-NAM-EASE prison camp..."

"My friends, it's time for some STRATE talk..."

"There will be MOHR wars..."

If some of you are praying your lord-and-savior John McBush will bring specifics next week, don't hold your breath.

Its often only legally married people who have a legal right to visit each other in the hospital.

This means in some situations hospitals have outright denied a gay partner access to their partner in the hospital, which in some situations means the partner ends up dying alone.

Civil Unions recognized in the state at least almost always provide the legal right to visit their partner in the hospital, which is something Obama definitely does support for gay people.

You know I agree with you on pretty much all the important issues, but McCain doesn't have a southern accent. You seem to be mocking Bush more than McCain. Be fair.

This most certainly wasn't Obama's best performance-- it's not in the same league as Clinton and Reagan, not even close. In fact, his jilted, halting delivery tonight at times reminded me of--dare I say it-- GWB himself. At least Obama doesn't have a funny squint or have a problem pronouncing difficult words like "nuclear".

Clinton brought the house down the other night, and I believe made a better case for an Obama presidency than Obama did himself.

But that opening video was still pretty awesome...

My 32 year old cousin died of aids in 1991 and I could tell you of horror stories about his days in the hosp and how his family blocked his partner of 10 years of seeing him or even being mentioned at his funeral. It was like his partner never exisited to the family. I havent spoken to any of them since. Yeah... laws are badly needed and long overdue.
