oh come on... pixies??

that's easily the most jerked off over indie darling ever.. and for what it's worth I think they're fucking terrible hacks.

read steve albini's comments on surfer rosa sometime, it's embarrassing.

His production of Surfer Rosa is largely what made his name as a producer, and he later retracted most of what he said. Plus if you let Albini be your guide, pretty much everything and everybody sucks, so what's the point.

Word.

And how are they on this list? They're legends. Their music is all over the place in movies, etc.

Some good bands on this thread though. Lotsa great indie music.

The band itself never made it huge though, imo. They played clubs for the most part, then after Trompe Le Monde they opened for U2 on the achtung baby tour (? I think it was that one), and broke up. I don't think any of their albums ever cracked top twenty, never got much mainstream play (Here comes your man might've made the top twenty) they never headlined an arena tour or anything.

Sublime...they had a couple hits but nothing like a little death to hold you back from really making it big.
Who knows what would've happened had Bradley not died, but IMO Sublime is pretty damn big.

Sublime is huge. If I'm turning to popular radio stations and still hearing your music 8 years after you put it out there then you are huge. Both Jimmy Eat World and Sublime shouldn't be on this list.

Oh and the list that I made are all fake names. All of them.

The point that I was trying to make is they would have been even bigger/more popular if he hadn't died.

Are you kidding me? they have reached uber like status now....

We must listen to different radio stations.

They were ahead of their time, the world was not ready. Are they even still together?

One of my favourite bands ever. I believe their last album was The Argument about 6 or 7 years ago; brilliant album BTW!

No, Ian is working on a side project (The Evens) with his gf Amy. Joe and Guy are doing a solo tour. They have said a reunion is likely, just don't know when.

I still kick myself for not seeing them. They were at a club I went to all the time on what might've been their last tour (I'm not really sure when it was). I have no idea why I didn't go. :(

Shame. I saw them in 91 shortly after Steady Diet came out and it was one of the best shows I've ever been to. If they do a reunion tour I will definitely be in attendance.

They got pretty close a few years ago, not sure what happened. I wish I could have seen them live, I hear it's one of the best shows to see.

Really? I had no idea. Nobody I know has ever heard of them.

KT

In the early 2000's they seemed like they were getting fairly well-known. All of my friends knew who they were and for a while put them on the same level as The Strokes as far as popularity goes.

um, what?

They got mildly popular based on one of their worst songs of all time, which was part of their weakest album, then (as far as I can tell) faded back into obscurity. Hell, the local rock station just played something from their new album during their "edge of the X" session. Which means the Clear Channel-owned station considers JEW an up-and-coming band on the fringe of becoming well-known.

Or are you arguing that they shouldn't be big because they aren't good? If that's the case, well, you're entitled to your opinion.

to say they never hit it big is quite a mis-statement.....

They had 1 hit, if I remember correctly. Not exactly "huge".

clarity will always be in my top 20albums of all time. I haven't liked anything since except the stay on my side ep

from wiki/billboard.com

The band found itself receiving much more attention from its label, who released a video for "Lucky Denver Mint" and featured the song on the label's soundtrack to the movie Never Been Kissed.

Despite their lack of a label, the band decided that they wanted to push into Europe. The band purchased copies of Clarity at-cost from Capitol and shipped them to stores in Europe. Upon arriving in Germany for a short European tour, the band were surprised to find a packed house waiting for them, despite not having a European label. Having already cut ties with their management, the band used the experience as motivation to start working for themselves to build an audience.

The band scouted for a new label. The result was a short bidding war, with interest coming from several major labels, including, ironically, Capitol Records.[6] The band eventually signed with DreamWorks.

The album's second single, "The Middle", became the band's biggest single to date, reaching #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The video for the song received significant airplay on MTV, including on Total Request Live.

Futures was released in October 2004, with "Pain" serving as the lead single. (By this time, Dreamworks had been acquired by Interscope Records.)

Subsequent months saw the release of "Work" and the title-track as singles. Having already toured the U.S. alone and with Taking Back Sunday, the band signed on to tour in the summer and fall of 2005 with Green Day.

Futures was released in October 2004 and debuted at number six on the Billboard charts, eventually going gold on the strength of the Top 40 hit "Pain."

Lets see,

couple major record contracts
platinum and gold album
touring with popular bands all over the U.S. & world.

I think that qualifies as being a little bit big : P

My vote would go to:

At the drive in...although somewhat moot b/c they would've blown up/been huge had they not called it quits right as they were getting popular.

Bah, I thought the sarcastic responses were covered a few posts ago and we had moved on to serious responses only.

Jimmy Eat World has multiple new songs in regular rotation on both the local Clear Channel rock station and the local independent station, and three or four older songs in occasional rotation on the same stations. Their last album was produced by Butch Vig, who is probably one of the top five most expensive and most respected producers in rock music (Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Garbage, etc). They are headlining an arena tour and have Paramore opening for them, who are already a wildly popular MTV and radio staple in their own right. Hardly obscurity. They aren't up there with U2 or Dave Matthews Band, but they are comfortably in the next tier of fame.
