Detective - (one of the few bands to record on Swan Song)
Cactus - (Jim McCarty went on to play with the Rockets)
Bloodline - (rock driven blues that came out after classic rock's popularity had dwindled)
Atomic Bitchwax - (lead guitarist from Monster Magnet)

The Penis should have been bigger. Damn it if one bad performance didn't cause them to shrink into oblivion.

Really? I wouldn't say they're huge, but they are a mainstream band. They had a real popular song, "The Middle", in 2001. Catchy song... chorus goes "It just takes some time, little girl, you're in the middle of the ride..."

They were "big" a few years ago...maybe 5 dunno...this was their "hit"

Admittedly this song did get the shit played out of it. Ugh. I wasn't aware of any other songs getting much hype.

They probably did something to piss off clearchannel back then and got blacklisted.

read steve albini's comments on surfer rosa sometime, it's embarrassing.

His production of Surfer Rosa is largely what made his name as a producer, and he later retracted most of what he said. Plus if you let Albini be your guide, pretty much everything and everybody sucks, so what's the point.

I am referring to his comments about the band itself during the surfer rosa recordings.. he said they were absolutely laughable musicians and couldn't even play their own shit properly. I believe he said he had to record some of the guitar parts because they were either too wasted or just not talented enough.

While I agree he is pretty much negative about everything, it's not hard to hear what he's talking about when you listen to that band.. they're just terrible and they get all this praise; it's kind of baffling to me. To each their own I guess.

In Utero is a much better Albini album mix.. probably his best work in my opinion.

Ok, after watching the Electric Worry video about 3 more times it officially kicks ass.

I would have said pixies, but I am from Boston, and they have a decent following here (after all....they are from the Boston area).

Aye. I remember seeing them open for Sepultura and Ministry in 92/93 and thinking they were pretty great, but I never really got fully into them until recently.

I concur! Love that song!

I'm gonna add Ruth Ruth - Uninvited. Shame they kind of disappeared.

Also I'm gonna say 'She Wants Revenge' is pretty popular actually. Been awhile since they've released something which is probably why they kind of went under the radar.

October Project

The United States of America

The Incredible String Band

The Cat Empire -- Huge in Australia, not so much here.

So many others, Jeebus. But, just because I can, I'm going to include the late, GREAT Stan Rogers, and a YouTube link to his song Barret's Privateers, best heard live and drunk, and which I had the great good fortune to hear him and his band sing live just two weeks before he died in a plane fire at the tender age of 33.

If you click on no other link in my post, give Barret's Privateers a listen.

Word.

And how are they on this list? They're legends. Their music is all over the place in movies, etc.

Some good bands on this thread though. Lotsa great indie music.

A good friend mine is in love with these guys and she tried to get me to go the show with her last time they were here (Vancouver), but I ended up being out of town. By all accounts they were very good.

I don't know if they should have been huge, I just know that only one Semisonic song ever made it onto local radio, and it wasn't even the best song on the album. "Closing Time" was played to death.
