Saw it last night.

Loved it.
I feel its a MUST see in 3D and IMAX/Ultrascreen.
Loved it.

That being said, and this may sound weird but I thought Zoe Saldana (Neytiri) did a great job in the movie.

You are correct in that theatrical revenues are a rough 50/50 split :)

lol...there is no way exhibitors are getting away with 50% film rental on this

All this speculation about final gross is pointless right now IMO since we haven't even seen the second week yet. Most indications are pointing to a film with some real legs though.

I shall take it upon myself to once again translate the native language of the poster below into English. My previous effort can be located here: http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?p=29028601#post29028601

Sirs,

It is with some urgency that I request clarification regarding the recent cinematic endeavor of one, James Cameron, dubiously christened "Avatar." Allow me to set forth the following musings, and I shall await your responses in kind.

At first blush, our young but tested and woefully tried protagonist appears to have "gone native" as some academians might conclude, for naught but to acquire a position of power and respect among the planet's technologically inferior (though perhaps a hasty and myopic generalization that, given the biological networking capabilities nigh beyond the comprehension of the transplanted human population) indiginous people.

Of course, such lofty goals are not transparent and are indubitably aided by the hero's physical attraction (no doubt hormonally triggered to overcome the barrier of interspecies attraction otherwise lacking in presence) to the maritally available offspring of the native tribe's headmaster and shaman mistress. I humbly submit however, that attendant to obtaining stature within the Na'vi community by securing lifetime bonding with his female counterpart, our young marine may perhaps also recognize the particular devastation to be wrought by his former compatriots in their quest for intergalactic consortium?

Now, one might assume such aspirations of rebellion are doomed to fruitlessness at their very inception given the array of might with which they are confronted. But in studying the issue from a strategic tact however, analogous comparisons may be drawn to the Battle of Endor from which the indigenous tribe did in fact defeat forces superior to them in hardware, technology and resources, albeit with the aid of insurgents of their own. So unlikely as victory might appear, possibility itself is a notion one should not treat as cavalier, else one should prepare to be disabused, expeditiously.

Lest we forget the words of a master, "technology sufficiently advanced is indistinguishable from magic". Given Pandora's self-aware biosphere's ultimate global retaliation to man-kind's un-kind visitation upon her people, the invaders themselves facing such onslought might indeed have stared in wonder and awe even as they were struck down by the seemingly organized and directed local fauna, "what magical devilry is this?"

Are you guys the same type of people who thought Dark Knight was one of the greatest movies ever? If so then I can wait.

Hehe, im with you. I thought DK was extremly boring, I even dozed off a few times. Avatar is a rental at best for me.

Just saw it in IMAX 3D. Amazing. Would see again.

The story was simplistic (same as Pocahontas), but it's so beautiful you don't even care. The 3D was interesting...it doesn't pop out at you. It's more like looking through a window, like you're sitting on-set. You brain registers it really quickly. Seems really sharp because of that. I took Gizmodo's advice and focused on the foreground objects/people instead of the background and that really did the trick. I got no headache from the 3D like I usually do at 3D movies, which was really nice.

The fast-moving action scenes were a little hard to follow in 3D, but it was really awesome all around. Totally groundbreaking. I'm a huge fan of computer graphics and this just took the cake. It's mind-bending how much artwork went into this movie, I can't even how many artists they employed. I totally want a pet dragon now too :D

btw the 3D glasses do fit over eyeglasses perfectly fine. Oh and remember to use the bathroom before you go, it's pretty long lol.

I read the special effects were amazing but the story sucked...meh

Yeah, it's just Pocahontas with aliens. But the graphics are so gorgeous you don't even care :D

After all the gripes about the "cliche" story, I wasn't expecting much but came away very pleasantly surprised. It was much better than I expected with several twists and unexpected events.

Story/Acting gets a 8/10

3D visuals get a 100 out of 10. ;)

This is how I felt. Totally transported.

Yeah, I think my jaw was dropped for most of the movie. I don't understand the haters...it's a movie, not something to analyze like a dissertation. Buy some popcorn, put on your 12-year-old hat, and go enjoy yourself for a couple hours :) The graphics were pretty wild...

For people who felt the plot was a re-hash, of course it was. Read:

Saw it IMAX 3D.
-Awesome world they have created. From the plants, creatures, a ton of detail and thought.
-Too much Pocahontus/Dances with Wolves going on here. Would have appreciated with something more creative.
-Some of emotional parts seemed so forced. Other parts were well played. Mixed bag.
-Unsure about 3D as the mainstay. There were scenes with good depth and a good sense of scale. Others were like, "hey 3d". Some scenes seemed like there were 3 transparency layers on top of another. Like I was looking at an overhead projector, not watching a movie.
-Sigourney Weaver is still cool.

-I was wanting for a good Pixar in 3D instead. I should have seen UP in the 3D.

Yeah, I had a hard time connecting emotionally to the aliens. I've noticed the weak story thing is a trend on many major CGI movies - if you've ever seen "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within" you'll know what I'm talking about. Amazingly amazing graphics, super lame story. Luckily this story was just a re-hash and not boring like FF:TSW.

For better or for worse, 3D is taking off. Starting in 2010, we're going to see a lot more 3D movies. Hopefully it will lead to glasses-free viewing technology, perhaps even holographics...

A shame. I really have no desire to see another 3D film. I sure hope they at least offer things in both 2D and 3D.

Several things that article doesn't take into account

1. Interest
2. Residuals
3. Back-end compensation tied to producers/directors

I'm not saying that the movie won't make money, it's just RIDICULOUSLY HARD with a budget that big. Regardless, only time will tell. 800m WW BO would be the bare minimum the movie would need to come CLOSE to breakeven.

In my opinion your estimates are off. Not so much for costs but income. Right now, after 4 or 5 days, Avatar is at 300 million WW. In terms of ROI its not going to be amazing but its going to turn a nice profit Im sure. BO is going to be 900+, then you add DVD and Bluray and TV rights...

What you failed to miss thought, is the possibility of sequel and how much thats worth. If they make another one, and I suspect they will. A lot of research has been done and investments made that dont need to be done again for the sequel. Less need for marketing since everyone knows what Avatar is by then and little to no risk for the investment. Yeah, its clear that Avatar is a moderate success and time will tell if its a great one...

I remember reading about a year ago that even the humans in the movie were going to be rendered in CG, but unless James Cameron bought computers from 100 years in the future, I'm assuming this statement was wrong.

I really hope 3D doesn't become the standard; it's purty for the first 10 minutes, then my headaches start in. I saw this movie in 3D IMAX and a regular theater, and I thought the effects looked much better in the regular one.
