I'll do like I do with every other movie.
Wait till it comes out in rental/pay per view

This email was sent to a good friend of mine, from one of his good friends who does Visual Effects for major Hollywood movies:

"Dear Asshole,

Holly and I just saw an early industry screening of Avatar and I must say it is truly amazing. Ground breaking. Pioneering. I haven't seen anything like it and feel rejuvenated as a Hollywood VFX guy.

It's a complete picture and more. 3D is the way it should have always been. Not gimmicky and it's not going to make you sick. You are truly inside the movie. Also, the story is pretty strong. You are concerned for the characters and they're CG creatures half the time. The VFX is astounding. From someone who does that for a living I was in awe.

When you go it is imperative that you see it in IMAX 3D. Don't settle for anything less."

I wasn't big on seeing Avatar, but now... maybe I will see it.

Nope, but I'll probably see it this weekend if I have the time.

I have Alexis Bledel as my home wallpaper right now. Such a hottie.

Yeah, being called an asshole sealed the deal for me.

Unless I hear from someone I trust with excellent film taste (this means YOU KeithTalent!) that it's a legitimately good MOVIE and not just an FX extravaganza wrapped around a blah story, in which case I'll skip it till cable or whatever.

Haha, I'm getting suckered in by all of the good reviews. I was so not interested for the longest time, but now I feel I need to see this in the theatre. 😱

Just reserved my tix for Sunday at 12:20PM for Imax.

$17.50 per f'ing ticket!

Oh well, I see maybe 4-5 movies a year in the theaters.

Maybe it's different on the big-screen, but in the previews the effects look lame and cheesy and the plot is, at this point, a rehash of several other ideas that seem far better implemented. I probably will pass on this thing.

I can't wait to see it but it won't be tonight.

ill probably see it this weekend in IMax 3D. $15.00 a ticket is not bad at all.

The price is a large reason why 3D won't become mainstream anytime soon. Good article on Avatar and 3D movies in general in last months WIRED magazine.

I guessed for 125mm opening weekend. I'm sure $15-$20 ticket prices will help my cause

I'm guessing you're about 50 million high on that estimate 🙂 I'll BM this, but bet that it will do 60-80, probably about in the middle of that.

It's actually entirely missplaced and makes me wonder if the same i love you who wrote the e-mail review actually even wrote that a**hole intro you're so enamored with.

no no its not. He did write it. And that's simply a term of endearment.

Just came back from the Midnite 3D show - was awesome. My first 3D movie. Didn't think the effects were overly done - it was enough just to submerge you into the movie.

Also, Avatar is pretty much FernGully, but that's not a bad thing.

Definitely worth seeing.

Just got back from seeing it in Imax 3d. Amazing movie. A work of art IMO. Only issue I had was my seats could have been better... and I had to piss so bad since it was really long but I couldn't stop watching it so I held it 😛

I'm just going to say that was the most amazing experience I've ever had with a movie. It was my first 3D movie, and I'm definitely going to see it again. The technology behind the whole thing is very amazing to me, and I couldn't believe how fast 2.5 hours went.

I just got back from a regular showing of Avatar, no 3D for me. It was a very very good movie, and the special effects did not feel contrived to me, rather they had a reason to be there in order to serve the purpose of the story. I might see it on IMAX 3D as well ....

Are you guys the same type of people who thought Dark Knight was one of the greatest movies ever? If so then I can wait.

i don't know. while it looks like the movie will be beautiful (the effects and everything), isn't this basically Pocahontas with aliens?
