Sad that we put such a high value on graphics. Electronic games are the same way, sadly.
it isn't a video game.
it's called effects.

I saw this film 2 weeks ago in imax 3D. I thought it was a great film and well worth the money spent on the price of admission. I only wish that Hollywood could pump out more quality films like this instead of the continuous stream of trash we are normally subjected to. Congrats Cameron!
wtf?
this was not quality.
production-wise, it was a behemoth, and was extremely impressive. but as far as quality film...a truly laughable, unoriginal, unshocking, truly forgettable boom boom kind of flick.
fun one way through, but not really worth a second visit. Even if watching movies is your thing, which it doesn't seem to be for you. (otherwise, you would have seen enough movies, and varied your experience, to understand how truly mundane this picture is as a film)

I really liked the movie, but I don't understand why people so passionately defend it. If you enjoyed it, what do you care if someone else didn't? You guys remind me of the people who passionately side with either nVidia or ATI and defend them to the death. Weirdos.
Ah yes, you certainly contributed a lot here. What the hell are you douchebags all crying over again?
You're mad at what now because Avatar made a lot of money?
It was visually stunning and imaginative. It was a beautiful movie to watch, and thats why it made money. Sometimes its nice to watch something different.
You homos crying because your favorite movie of all time Brokeback Mountain isnt #1?
If you dont like the movie, dont see it. And the shut the fuck up.
avatar owned, i plan on seeing it a second time in the theatre before it is taken out of the theatres.
This. Avatar had great visuals, but everything else was average to terrible.
There are TONS of far superior films out there for people who care about good directing, acting, casting, writing, and so on.
Hell, even some remakes are far better. The 2006 film 'The Departed' was an example of what a great movie can be. Or even something small like the recent 'Crazy Heart', with perhaps the performance of Jeff Bridges entire career, and that's saying a lot.
And how many other people saw it multiple times?
How many people saw it in 2D and then saw it in 3D (or IMax)?
Add in the fact that there are far more theaters and screens in the US plus the fact that movie tickets have far outpaced inflation, there is no way you can compare sales against older movies.
Sales are all relative. Microsoft has sold a shit load of XBOX 360s but how can you compare that to sales of PS3 when the XBOX has (had?) a 50% failure rate...
Hell these days most won't even bother to see them in the theater, they'll just wait for them to come out on DVD or BlurayStupid arguement.
Avatar is in no way the best movie of the year. That belongs to Inglorious Bastards.
But..it isn't hard to see why it is the top grossing film of all time. I'd never watch Inglorious Bastards, Godfather, Raging Bull, or most other things more than once in a theater. All of those moview are over 9000 times better than Avatar yet I've seen Avatar twice in 3d.
<-- still haven't seen it.
