As of today Avatar is #1 grossing movie of all time.

wooooooohooooooooooo

James Cameron is the man #1 and #2 = over 3.6 billion

now if he didnt have Piranha 2 following him

Sad that we put such a high value on graphics. Electronic games are the same way, sadly.

Yeah what a shame people push technological advances for movies these days. Let's not consider that this movie has more man hours behind it than possibly any other movie made to date with an incredibly strong directer behind it. I wish every movie was another version of The Man from Earth.

And lol @ the people saying this wouldn't happen. Grats on the first $2 billion movie, Cameron.

I saw this film 2 weeks ago in imax 3D. I thought it was a great film and well worth the money spent on the price of admission. I only wish that Hollywood could pump out more quality films like this instead of the continuous stream of trash we are normally subjected to. Congrats Cameron!

You obviously do not watch many movies.

This. Avatar had great visuals, but everything else was average to terrible.

There are TONS of far superior films out there for people who care about good directing, acting, casting, writing, and so on.

Hell, even some remakes are far better. The 2006 film 'The Departed' was an example of what a great movie can be. Or even something small like the recent 'Crazy Heart', with perhaps the performance of Jeff Bridges entire career, and that's saying a lot.

I'm still waiting for it to come out on Blu-Ray so I can rent it from Netflix, because it honestly didn't look that good to me. Sure, it's got pretty CGI, but the plot looked lacking. I'm a pretty avid movie watcher, too... I average 2 movies week on Netflix and about 8 a year in the theaters.

I went to see "Up In The Air" the last time I went to the theaters instead... now THAT was a good movie! I hope that it wins a few Oscars, since it's easy to relate to if you've ever had to travel on business and/or have been laid off.

Yeah... people seem to forget that just because a movie makes a ton of money, it doesn't make it a GOOD movie.

For example, I can't help but remember my experience watching Titanic when it came out. I found myself rooting for the iceberg to show up about half way through the movie, just to bring an end to that idiotic love story between Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet.

Next weekend it should be at $2,000,000,000,000 worldwide. Totally deserves it, best movie I've seen in a long while.

You're making a lot of assertions about a movie you haven't even seen.

I mean.. "The plot looked lacking"?? Did you glean that from the TV or theatrical trailer, who in a perfect world wouldn't try to reveal much of anything about the plot anyway? Give me a break, I didn't want to buy into the hype but in the end I did and enjoyed it more then I could have imagined... in 2D BTW.

My take on avatar:

visually stunning portrayal of an imaginative world
"ok" storyline
hit or miss acting. Ribisi was terrible; main bad guy was meh; man good guy was passable to meh; lead female was pretty decent to good.
