New build, the 1TB HDD finally returns to last years pricing, albeit with the help of a promo. The Samsung 830 128GB also makes its triumphant return!

New build. The 830 has shot back up to $125, so its back to the M4. HDD prices also went back up. There is a nice deal on the TX650 though.

Hey Mfenn, the samsung 830 on newegg is 103 currently, so I'd do that over the m4, at least for now...who knows how long that would stay.

Good to know! In case anybody is wondering, you should always get the 830 over the M4 if the 830 costs less or is about the same price.

I like your topic but all price is in US dollars.

So when I check them in Canada, no free shipping and up to $10+ more.

damn you Canada prices.

New build, back to the Samsung 830! There's also a Gold rated Seasonic PSU and a 2TB HDD in there this time. Oh, and a 7970 GHz Edition.

ugh Canada prices. That power supply is $105 and no free shipping in Canada.

I know Seasonic is the best... Why does newegg do this. our dollar is on par.

I've been lurking here for a while and have really been appreciating this thread as I'm a new learner and will be building my first computer soon. Thanks for keeping the OP updated. :)

I have to ask though, how would this build fare at 2560x1440 res? I've got my eye on the Shimian QH270-Lite 27", but I have no experience playing games above 1920x1080 res. Would it be wise to pair that monitor with a $1000 computer budget or should I expect a noticeable performance hit on current games? I'm not looking to max things out, but I'd like to play at reasonably high settings without suffering in FPS for it.

It's Cyber Monday/Week, I wonder how the rig will look this week? intel + pro4 combo is out of stock.

You're not going to be able to run at 2560x1400, max out every single setting and still get 60 FPS with any single-GPU system, the 7970 included. However, it will hold its own if you don't mind turning down things like AA and SSAO.

Shows as in stock for me?

Good to know. I've always played with things like AO disabled/lowered anyway, so that's no loss for me. My current setup usually allows for medium to high settings. I just want to bring that experience to a larger monitor. I do a lot of Photoshop work and could really use more screen space.

Thanks for the response! I'll definitely be referencing this thread when I order my parts next month.

It's amazing you have a rig for under 1K with a 7970 in it. If we take out the SSD and some things here or there, you can build a great gaming rig for $800-850. I am going to use this as my LAN PC setup....

I just read your updated guide. Very nice.

I live 5 minutes from a Microcenter. I can get the 3570k and AsRock Pro4 mobo you suggested for $230 + tax. I assume you and the others in here will support that decision? I game (BF3 and Planetside 2) and do video encoding. But I log a lot more hours gaming than video encoding.

I just did some benchmarking on the rig in my signature.

BF3 low settings average of 62.54 FPS (about 80% CPU usage, 75% GPU usage). Ultra settings 29.84 FPS (70% CPUS usage, 100% GPU usage). Could I expect either of these to increase with the new CPU? Basically I think my current CPU is holding it's own, so don't know if it's worth the $230 to upgrade.

TYIA,

You'll get the best response if you post a new thread with your question. This thread is mostly for discussing the midrange build.

To your question, based on your experiments, your CPU is good for about 60 FPS. You'll see the most improvement at Ultra with a new GPU. However, you would need something in the ~$300-400 range (7950, GTX 670) to get a substantial upgrade over your 6950.

Actually, with a infinitely fast GPU, would get somewhat less than 60 FPS because Ultra settings are more CPU and GPU intensive, but that the CPU is not as big of a factor as the GPU.

New build. I thought I was going to have to drop the 7970, but thankfully Sapphire came to the rescue with $360 price on one. The 200R for $40 is very nice too. It omits the drive cage in front of the GPU, so you should be 7970 in there. There are also the usual deal-chasing SSD, HDD, and PSU changes.
