One step closer to virtualizing my environmental control server! Been meaning to do that for a bit. The server keeps loosing the network stack, and it's also the DNS server, so it means my whole network goes down when it does that.

Virtualizing it may not fix that issue if it's a software issue, but I'm trying to virtualize as much stuff as I can now anyway so it's one less physical box drawing power. The OS boots up and everything, I'll deal with the USB passthrough stuff for the actual controller another time, so physical host is still on now.

I also need to setup a secondary DNS server, and I should have done that first, I was twirling my thumbs while it was imaging since my internet was down.

It's always exciting to make new changes, this is all stuff I have been procrastinating on and finally getting done.

Tomorrow if all goes well I'm also getting a new truck. Well, new to me, it's a 2010. My current truck is on it's last legs so time to say good bye. Going to miss the long box though but I might actually end up liking having a back seat too... good place to put tool boxes and stuff I don't want to get wet.

I'd say life is good right now TBH.

This is a bold move, equivalent to doing an IT change on a Friday.

Just finished virtualizing my home automation server, I moved the USB devices over to the host and setup pass through to see if it works in the VM. Was actually fairly easy and it picked up properly in udev so device names didn't change. Then I have a set of 12h day shifts so if something goes wrong well I can't do anything.

The hvac controller seems to be working great so far, the arduino that monitors environmental stuff seems to die after a while so I will need to deal with that. That one is less critical and I can live without it.

I have to keep the physical box running because it powers the sensors, but I wlll buy a DIN 5v PSU and throw that on the DIN rail and rerun the power that way then I can shut down the server. I may even just wire in a 5v adapter and call it good. I'll have to measure the draw but don't think it's much. The hydrogen sensor does have a heater in it but don't think it draws more than like a watt.

I'm suspecting maybe the Arduino is failing due to power, maybe the USB port on the host is not delivering as much power as the other server did. So I will deal with that after my shifts. Long term goal is to actually build new sensor/controls that use POE ethernet instead anyway so I don't need to rely on USB or pass through anything.

We just had the Temu version of killdozer, not much info about it other than a few pics from one of the victims. Apparently they hit up quite a lot of buildings at that end of town.

Seems the serial stuff is really not playing nice with pass through. Think I'll have to move my home automation back to the physical box. The hvac controller is starting to have issues now too. The connectivity just dies after a while. I plan to redo everything so the controllers are ethernet based anyway so may as well focus on that and keep it physical for now.
