ATOT, let's decide on the Mohammed cartoons - POLL

Hi there,

As a journalist, I'm both intrigued and concerned by this entire controversy brewing over the so-called "Mohammed cartoons". I admit openly that I firmly belive in freedom of speech, and that I see nothing more dangerous than curbing it for any type of religious reasons, regardless of which religion invokes them.

For those who haven't seen them yet, the cartoons are here:

First batch
Second batch

I'd like to get as many of you to participate in this poll... I am really curious, and we can also learn something from these results. ATOTers of Muslim faith are especially welcome to post their opinions.

PLEASE KEEP THIS CIVILIZED!

and, most important:

VOTE TRUTHFULLY and SHOW YOUR REAL THOUGHTS.

For the last time, this isn't a free speech issue. It's a "You deliberately offended a fourth of the world and now they're angry" issue.

Yes the newspaper had every right to satirize aspects of the Muslim religion in cartoon form. In a free, open, democratic society people should be able to mock or otherwise criticize any religion without fear of being killed.

For the last time, this is a free speech issue. Your second statement is also a free speech issue.

It *is* about free speech.
The cartoons were made because a writer could not get anyone to make drawings for his children's book about Muhammad. Viewed by themselves, some may be somewhat offensive. Together with the original article, as intended, they are not.

Your right, it's more then just a free speech issue, it's a free country issue.
Something Rotten in Denmark?

Something Rotten in Denmark?
by Daniel Pipes and Lars Hedegaard
New York Post

A Muslim group in Denmark announced a few days ago that a $30,000 bounty would be paid for the murder of several prominent Danish Jews, a threat that garnered wide international notice. Less well known is that this is just one problem associated with Denmark's approximately 200,000 Muslim immigrants. The key issue is that many of them show little desire to fit into their adopted country.

Danish editor tests right to violate Muslim taboos

COPENHAGEN ? When Flemming Rose heard last month that Danish cartoonists were too afraid of Muslim militants to illustrate a new children's biography of Islam's Prophet Muhammad, he decided to put his nation's famous tolerance to the test.

THAT is free speech. You think these are the first political carricatures ever? Open up ANY newspaper in the world, and you'll see similar ones.

Bin Laden Artwork Now Hanging In New York

Morry Alter

(CBS) NEW YORK Is that who we think it is in that picture?

Our interest in this story was sparked by an angry email sent to us here at WCBSTV.com. The writer wasn't angry at us, but rather about what he'd seen at the current National Black Fine Art Show in the Puck Building. This is the 10th anniversary edition of the show which features galleries from across the country selling the works of America's top African American painters, sculptors, and photographers.

But the writer had big problems with a painting by Harlem artist "Tafa". It depicts an upside down Christ-like figure with a face strongly resembling Osama Bin Laden. The email read in part, "This is outrageous. This is an attack against my religion. How can an artist go so low? Most people are outraged, most Christians."

On the phone with me, the artist declined to do an on-camera interview, telling me the work speaks for itself, but adding, the resemblance to Bin Laden was no accident.

The art show's producer Josh Wainwright, insisted he hadn't even made the Bin Laden connection. "Knowing what you know now would you have barred the painting from being part of your show?" I asked. "Absolutely not," he replied. Wainwright says he's a military veteran and despises Bin Laden, but he added, "I don't think it's anyone's job or vocation to limit the expression of artists."

While some at the show did recognize the Bin Laden face on the Christ body, we found none who were offended. Instead most defended "Tafa" the artist's right to speak his mind. The painting is bordered with hand lettered expressions and names including "mujahadin," "McCarthyism," and "Amadou Diallo," a man killed by New York City police in 1999.

You could take the painting out of circulation, or not, for a mere $12,000 and change. You can see the painting, or not, by visiting the show which runs through Sunday. Daily admission is $15.

The difference between Muslims and Chistrians is that Muslims resort to violence and Christians do not when faced with this sort of stuff...

Well let me put it this way, many prominent figures in your religon openly promote attacks on other people, criticize others way of life and existance and constantly threaten their existance.

The second someone mocks your way off life (through words and pictures, but not bombs and AK-47s) and this is what they do? Doesn't this strike anyone as a little bit hypocritical?

And they proved the cartoonist right by acting like tribal savages in Syria, rioting, firiing guns in the air and burning the Danish embassy.

The Muslim world tolerates lies, slander and terrorism against Israel and the West. Since those who don't act seem to approve of those who do as long as they "only" kill Westerners and Jews, the cartoonist expressed the impression that Muslims have created for themselves in the rest of the world.

Exactly, they proved the artist right by doing what they did, and the sad part is that they don't even know it...

you think these Islamic countries that burn flags of other countries is not offensive?? I have posted this several times in the other threads and have yet to see reply how this is not the same as the cartoons (that being freedom of expression that offends another group)...

The Danish flag that is being burned also has a cross on it. So I guess that's not only offensive to Danes but also Christians.

What I am wondering is if today it is for example a black being mocked, will there be equal support for the newspaper? I mean in the US, religion is open to criticism or mocking for whatever reason, but race is more offlimit. And I don't want to get into why that is. but in other country or culture, maybe it is the other way around. Maybe religion is off limit.

So is it so surprising that some people feel extremely upset and feel the West is abusing the freedom of speech to insult and humiliate them?

Perhaps if the Muslims wanted to show us that the cartoons were not an accurate satire of their religion, they wouldn't be acting like a violent and murderous gang of thugs in response.

Go away back to the troll threads you babbling twit.

Perhaps Muslims should appologize for their common depiction of Jews as murders, 9-11 conspirators and Hitleresque. Perhaps they should put so much energy into denouncing one of thier own popularly elected presidents who insists the Holocaust is a fiction and Zionist plot, and its grounds for Isreal's destruction.

Perhaps they shouldn't glorify the "martyrs" for intentionally murdering women and children, and then hand them the keys to the government.
Their violent oppression of women offends me. Where is my apology? Please CC my wife.

Perhaps Muslims would be better served by protesting against their own people that advocate and act out such behavior instead of joining in and validating such a negative view.

Freedom of speech baby, freedom of speech.

Most definitely free speech, & this just serves as a great example to the world that we're not dealing with sane and rational people here.

I was raised Christian, & you can make all the satirical drawings you want. In fact I'll probably find a lot of them funny.

And if I don't I won't torch your embassy.
