Hey, it was my first attempt at pouring a beer... all the other times I drank from a can/bottle. Gimme a break. :p

Just hold the glass at a 45 degree angle for the first half of the pour, so that it goes down the side. Then pour the rest straight in.

Beer will make you whip out your fleshlight at a party. You shouldn't drink.

I looked at a place about block away from my apartment (Hawthorne's Cafe) because I know they sell growlers. No luck on your Pliny the Younger. That place does have an awesome beer selection though, so there's an upside. :p
I was in Philly over Valentine's weekend with a friend to visit a couple of her friends. By chance we were walking past Hawthorne's on the way to get brunch. The window display convinced me to drag my friend in for some beer. I picked up a bottle of a personal favorite, Chimay.

I had never been to Philly before. Funny coincidence seeing the cafe mentioned just a week later. Cool place. Great selection of beer.

No offense xanis, but you might want to look up how to pour a beer. :p

If it's something like a belgian strong ale they can be quite ornery to pour. Doesn't matter how graceful you are...they'll still froth up.

The place is pretty awesome. Good beer selection, good food. Had I known I could have dropped by and said hello... I live about 3 blocks south on 11th, so the place is pretty much within spitting distance of my place.

EDIT: This is inspiring me to set up an ATOT Philly Meet. :p

Here's my current beer fridge.

You cant really see them, but in the far back left, I have some dogfish head 120min IPA from 2007.

Oh! Sam Smith's oatmeal stout. Nice choice. Dogfish head is aight. I've been to their brewery a number of times and they have some crazy sh!t on tap. Last time I was there, they had one "beer" (more like barley wine) on tap that was 23%. Wanted to buy some to take home, but they do not bottle it.

If you like brown ales, hard to go wrong with Gouden Carolus Grand Cru

Just wait. There's more out there than most people can even conceive of! The only problems are price and availability. Beer snobbing can be an expensive hobby. (but totally worth it)

Agreed. I went to Martys (Boston) the other day and dropped 70 bucks on 8 bottles. They are all quality, mind you, but still.

Oh, if anyone likes imperial stouts, try Ten Fidy. It makes Guiness look like it has a light tan.

I also picked up this one on the recommendation of Marty's owner:

Quick question, since this thread is now "Everything Beer" :p :

Me and my roommate are having two of our friends over tomorrow. I'm going to need to make a run to the beer distributor, so what should I get? Something decent, but not too expensive.

Just like wine, if you don't like Cabernets, if you drink the best Cab in the world you won't like it b/c it ain't your taste.

If you like that style of beer from Brooklyn, try other inetrpretations. Go to beeradvocate.com and look at their "Best of" list for your style of beer.

Also try to find a great local bar serving a multitude of craft beers. Tasting a great beer on draft at a bar is loads BETTER than bottled. It's worth the trip to the bar!

Cheers!

There are LOADS of bars in Philly that I can go to, so my only limitation is my wallet. :p

I've been recommended a few bars so I just have to go and try them now.

Do we have an official beer thread? If not, I might see about starting one.

I made weekly ones for a while. One thread isn't enough. I'll start one tomorrow :) I've been stocking up on Goose Island Bourbon County Stout for a while now. Got a handful stocked away, maybe I'll actually drink one tomorrow.

2 reasons why I hate ATOT beer threads:

1. Everyone here hates on any macro beer. Say you drink one let alone like one and you get reamed.

2. Everyone posts beers that looks so good but are all local micros that I'll never be able to taste which really sucks cus most of the micro beer bars here in LA area aren't that good.

#1 Wasn't much of an issue when I did the weekly threads. I put a disclaimer at the top.

I think I'll actually have a bottle of Founder's Porter as I settle in for bed.

Damn you people and your good micro's.

I visited Oregon for a couple days and the amount of micro's you could get at the local supermarkets was insane. I wish LA was like that.

Here is my list of beers that I have tried. The lower-case vs upper-case is LC = bottle UC = Draft.

They count different, because they taste different.

http://johntolliver.com/beerlist.html

Man that's awesome. I wish I had a list like that. Do you keep a log of what you liked most / what kind of taste you got from a specific brew? I did when I started but I never kept up with it and now that I've also tried hundreds of beers I find myself at a loss to describe many of those that have gone by. I remember drinking them, but I can't remember what half of them really did for me. I suppose if I really enjoy/disliked them, they would have a more profound memory, but eh.. I just wish I had written more down. Totally agree with the bottle vs draft. I really enjoy Young's Double Chocolate Stout but the differences between bottle, nitro can, and draft are night and day. Draft >>>> Nitro Can <<<<<<<<<< Botle IMHO.

I looked at a place about block away from my apartment (Hawthorne's Cafe) because I know they sell growlers. No luck on your Pliny the Younger. That place does have an awesome beer selection though, so there's an upside. :p

Never been to Hawthorne's, that place looks pretty sweet, though. I might have to take a trip next time I visit my parents' house.

Mmm... Ten Fidy. Love it. Also enjoyed Old Chub and Dale's Pale Ale both from Oskar. Best beer in a can you'll get. :)

I've heard good things about Hoegaarden... I'll have to try and get it next time I'm out.

Meh, it's mediocre as far as Belgians go but not a bad drinking beer.

My favorite wheat beer is Franziskaner, I like them better than Paulaner, Erdinger, and Augustiner for example. Man, I wish I could find a proper liquor store here. Sure I can get Erdinger at the market but damn I want some proper Belgians. I may have to resort to this: http://www.belgianbeer.com.hk/ . But it is only worthwhile if I order $100 USD worth of beer at a time and it is rather ackward ordering process since they are a wholesaler.

Perfect post. Whether or not you like La Fin Du Monde will be a good gauge as to where to go next. As long as we have a beer thread .. look what's hiding in my fridge!
If you like the St. B have you tried the Delerium Nocturnum yet? Its another Belgium dark but it doesn't have so much of the aftertaste. I far prefer it.

Was in LA a few months ago and stopped at a Ralphs/Vons/wutevathehell to pick up some beer and was shocked that newcastle was the best thing i could find. The budweiser section was quite volumous tho :awe:

you need to drink the DFH 120s. 3 years is about the limit before they become uninteresting syrup (all the hop character goes away)

I had 6 from 2005, I've drank one a year since. I think they're best at around 18 months.

Try Paddy's Pub. Watch out for Charlie though, he'll bite you right in your neck bitch. ;)

Yeah, I've had the Nocturnum and didn't care too much for it. I still much prefer the St. B. I do enjoy the Delerium Tremens though.
