Winds up to 155 mph.

NHC calling for a cat 3 landfall, but cat 4 or even 5 seem plausible. Storm surge will be terrible in areas just hit by Helene.
May barely get hurricane winds on coast - does look to weaken greatly before landfall in Florida, but still looking at 10+ foot storm surge which will mess up coastal areas. For reference, Tampa and Clearwater average about 50 and 30 feet above sea level respectively, so just problem mostly just on lower lying areas.

I certainly hope so. But this thing’s intensity seems well ahead of schedule.

This is totally going to head from "we're not taking calls from the Biden/Harris regime" before the storm to "WHERE IS JOE BIDEN BESIDES STEALING HURRICANE MONEY TO GIVE MIGRANTS SEX CHANGE OPERATIONS AND BUY THEM BMWS?!?!" after the storm.

People say it is bad to wish for bad things to happen to bad people but I really don't care anymore. Done humoring such harmful bad faith bullshit.

There are few people on the earth I actively wish harm to. Desantis is one of them. I'd quietly celebrate misfortune visiting that pile of shit. He has spent a career doing the same to others.

This fucking sucks. I doubt anyone here including me will be getting any work done this week. Nothing but a feeling of impending dread and I'm 2 hrs inland from Tampa in a relatively-new house. My son is staying in Tampa though he's nowhere near the ocean. He doesn't have any big trees over his place so hopefully he'll be ok. As the saying goes, flee from the sea, hide from the wind.

My list is growing rapidly.

I mean why would the Vice President of the United States and one who is running for the President call the Governor of a state about to be nailed by second major hurricane.

Refuses to take the call? What a damn child. The Republican Party is now a cult of the willfully ignorant and pure evil. It is not about politics but about lives. It is sad watching America in 2024 have 40% of the population wanting to return to the 1500s and who are so gullible.

Yep. Just the most awful evil ghouls are showing their faces each and every day - they literally go lower and lower every day and have zero morals or decency. There is a long list of Trump Party members who deserve a whole lotta shit.

Again, we go back to '05.

Currently, Hurricane Wilma is the strongest Atlantic hurricane ever recorded, after reaching an intensity of 882 mbar (hPa; 26.05 inHg) in October 2005;

It's almost like some people weren't alive before '06.

Oh, and Allen '80 hit 190MPH sustained.

Any storm remotely comparable to Wilma is incredible. Any season remotely comparable to ‘05 is incredible.

Easy ad content there. Just show logs of the rejected/declined call followed by images of whatever devastation Milton leaves in it's wake followed by one of the many clips of DeSantis laughing like an awkward hyena.

Yeah Wilma was quite the storm, incredible in every way. 2005 itself was just something to behold. Katrina at 175mph at peak, Rita at 180mph at peak, and Wilma at 185mph at peak.

And indeed people seem to forget Allen (190mph) and Gilbert (185mph). It’s not like peak intensity wasn’t reached before… Labor Day in 1935 got to 185mph (at least, would’ve been a really interesting to have recon back then). Seems like people have memory holed Irma (180mph), and already Dorian (185mph).

I’m wondering if we’ve seen the peak intensity for Milton at 175mph. There’s some evidence that it could be a bit higher, but that’s not quite supported by flight level winds. It’s a shame we won’t have the hurricane hunters in until three hours from now, will be very interesting to see what the pressure is at that point.

Saw this picture that was really interesting:

I saw somewhere that the current/recent wind speed readings were coming from the NW side and not the strongest sector.

Why is poor Camille so often left out?

Winds were estimated to be 190 or higher but the instruments were destroyed and there has been some doubt about the numbers since.

Hurricanes are a Chinese Hoax and Biden is controlling these to hurt innocent sweet republican children. Remember, DEMONRATS eat and drink the blood of babies. Your graph is fear mongering and fake news. Everyone, should go to Tampa bay and hang around on the beach as this fake storm goes quietly by.

Fake news and even if it were real news it is biden’s fault.

Yeahhh, I’ve seen the reanalysis that lowered the peak wind speed to 175 mph, so I do go by that. That was definitely bad though for sure; definitely nothing to sniff at.

Edit: I forgot Mitch in 1998! - 180mph.

Lol I thought it was climate change that is the hoax perpetrated by the Chinese.
Just that statement alone is disqualifying for a presidential candidate. I can come up with a list of probably hundreds of things that would be disqualifying that this dumbass said.

That QAnon shit has gone mainstream with this party. It’s wild. Up is down left is right. Truth are lies, lies are truth.

Milton is giving Katrina a solid run for new storm of the century.
Anyone near Tampa / west coast of Florida needs to flee.
The aren't even close to comparable in size. Katrina was a giant, Milton is quite small.

Yes, different storm but comparisons are understandable imo.

This storm still has a lot of time to expand its wind field as it weakens.

Considering the storm surge potential in a high population area, I can understand why people are making Tampa Bay/New Orleans comparisons.
