Waterspouts coming on land in east florida near vero beach. I hope Dapunisher is doing ok.

Local news would be best to get warnings but I like this youtuber. He and others do a good job calling tornado warnings. Sometimes they call them before the NWS does. He has another guy with him named Andy Hill and he is a tornado savant.

And Massive Fires.
Yep. When I lived in San Diego I knew no fewer than three people whose houses had burned down, which when you think about it is a lot. It included my ship’s XO.

I also remember the day where it was raining ash from the sky like snow. That was weird.

Although San Diego responded to those fires in a very smart way and buried most of their power lines. The rest of California did not get the memo.

Was a bad idea to build in all the canyons and also plant an incredibly flammable tree literally all over the place.

It was, and maybe it’s luck, but since the 2003 fire (source of the houses burning down and raining ash) San Diego has not seen another like it. From my understanding downed power lines are a big contributor.

Smoke allows power lines to arc, starting more fires.

Yes, much less of a problem now. The system was also redesigned to cut power to smaller chunks of problematic areas in the event of high wind/fire situations. I don't think any other power system has such granular control.

I live in Jacksonville and right now when I step outside I can feel the cold air from the front which is not how it was two weeks ago when Helene rolled up the coast. It was hot, super muggy and oppressive outside so this front is definitely saving us for now but fueling those monster tornadoes to the south.

Tampa it is.

...NORTHERN EYEWALL OF MILTON STARTING TO SPREAD ONSHORE ALONG
THE FLORIDA GULF COAST...
...700 PM EDT POSITION UPDATE...

The northern eyewall of Hurricane Milton is beginning to move
onshore of the Florida gulf coast near Tampa and St. Petersburg
where an Extreme Wind Warning is now in effect. Please shelter in
place as these extremely dangerous hurricane-force winds overspread
the region.

Yea looks like they’re getting more of the impacts from the wind then the surge.

Was projected at 10-15 feet. That’s a very consequential reduction.

Is it an expected phenomenon that Tornados spawn in the nearby areas ?

Been through a lot of these storms, and while it's expected to have possible hurricanes in the outer bands, I don't recall it being like this.

For one thing, I think any tornadoes are expected to be lesser ones. And maybe most were. But a couple I saw on vid were the wider wedge kind that you don't normally see. Scary as hell. The big one in St Lucie county had some kind of big debris circling it way, way off the ground... The met on the stream I was watching isn't from FL and said for that type/size of tornado, you need to get underground. Unfortunately, here there is no underground.

Tampa is hopefully avoiding the worst. Still, they will have intense winds and a lot of rain.

Just another crazy person. As is every "God told me to do X" person IMO.

Not any more crazy than the "THEY control the weather!" or "Bill Gates made covid vaccines to depopulate society" conspiracy morons.

You reap what you sow. He’s lucky the wind speed and surge numbers came down a bit. Something tells me if this remained a cat 5 at landfall, this dumbass would’ve still stayed.

I seriously wonder how many rabid football fans in Florida are desperately hoping that their Sunday game can still be a thing. This notion is based on some of my football fanatic friends being institutionally worthy in this regard.

Lt. Dan is a crazy dumb wanker.

Hopefully nobody risks life and limb for him if dumb luck--because that is what it is--decides his ass gets in peril. Or not. As far as I'm concerned, if he wants to stay, let him stay. Worry about people who might want to leave but find it difficult.

Not worth a story about it, or even this brief posting about it. There's nothing noteworthy about an idiot like that, certainly not anything laudable. All he might do is cause other people stress or potential harm when they do their job to maybe try to save him after he acts like a crazy selfish fool. Hopefully they don't.

Football "fanatics" answers your question. If the game is called off they'll rage at whoever.

Our power went out about a half hour ago. We’re in west Hernando county. Our whole house generator kicked on and we’re ok so far.

What kind of generator do you have? We’ve got a Generac plumbed for natural gas.
