This is the largest patch we've ever released to date. There's a lot of new data being pushed and a lot of system changes as well. We do what we can to anticipate the time it takes, but sometimes additional work needs done to ensure that everything will be working as smoothly as possible once it's all brought live. We would much rather try to err on the side of caution when it comes to taking extra time to make it all work.

Just wondering... Can I turn the downloader off, enable background downloading and pick up from where I left off?

Or are the servers down anyway and you can't do anything..?

As a side note, any other Blizzcon attendees unimpressed with the selection for the closing concert band?

So UI changes... we'll get a built-in spellalert... does it alert for enemy casters?

Is it going to be as cheese-tastic as the built-in damage numbers?

I came home and the patch seemed to work fine for me... given I wasn't here, I had no idea how long it took. Although, looking at the log in Logs\Blizzard Updater Log.html and Logs\3.3.X to 4.0.XWLK Install Log.html, my patch didn't take too long...

Installing Blizzard Updater to "D:\World of Warcraft\" on Tue Oct 12 08:09:54 2010

This patch upgrades Launcher from version 4.0.0.1807 to version 4.0.0.1979. Installing World of Warcraft Update at "D:\World of Warcraft\" on Tue Oct 12 08:28:01 2010.

...

This patch upgrades World of Warcraft from version 4.0.0.12911 to version 4.0.1.13164. Installing World of Warcraft Update at "D:\World of Warcraft\" on Tue Oct 12 08:28:45 2010.
Took about 19 minutes for the entire thing.

I was poking around at builds for my (Enhancement) Shaman and I'm considering...

http://cata.wowhead.com/talent#hbhZffG0s0hRGo:qkRVrdM0m

The only things I'm still unsure about are Acuity vs Concussion and for Major Glyphs: Totemic Recall vs Ghost Wolf. The thing about Acuity vs Concussion is that both don't give a lot of damage per point. Enhancement Shamans cannot get the talent to provide +100% damage on spell crit, so our crits aren't as powerful, which makes Acuity weaker. To provide an estimated benefit of acuity, consider that each point provides (1% * PERCENT_OF_PHYSICAL_DAMAGE) + (.5% * PERCENT_OF_MAGIC_DAMAGE) bonus damage. Concussion will boost Flame Shock (DD and DoT), Earth Shock and Lightning Bolt.

Okay, I don't know if the PTR is up, so I just read my Recount LUA file to pull the data from my dummy tests.

FT = 350178 phys (can crit)
SF = 103159 fire (can crit)
Melee = 1848019 phys (can crit)
LL = 431584 phys (can crit)
LB = 179886 nature (can crit)
FS = 73063 fire (can crit)
LS = 117946 nature (can crit)
FS_DOT = 210459 fire (can crit)
SS = 557327 phys (can crit)
ES = 259272 nature (can crit)

TOTAL:
350178 + 103159 + 1848019 + 431584 + 179886 + 73063 + 117946 + 210459 + 557327 + 259272 = 4130893

CONCUSSION AFFECTS...:
179886 + 73063 + 210459 + 259272 = 722680

722680/4130893 = 17.49%
Given the low value of ~20%, each point of Concussion is only worth .4% boost in damage. So, I guess I should be going 3/3 Acuity and 2/3 Concussion for right now (since I need to hit 81 for my next point).

Well, now that I have numbers, I can also try and factor in how powerful Acuity actually is! But first, when looking over these numbers, it seems we have an odd value. Lightning Shield has an oddly high crit rate as I had 88047 crits out of 117946 procs. I divided melee crits / overall melee attacks and I got 77.87%, which is very close to the 74.65% that I get for Lightning Shield. This doesn't affect the boosted value as it appears to still be 50%, but it's an interesting factor regardless.

Given the numbers above, the magic damage totals 1195483 out of the 4130893, which is 28.94%. So, that means Acuity should give us a .8553% boost per talent point, which makes it nearly twice as good as Concussion.

As for the Major glyphs... we don't have a single Major glyph that is worthwhile to get for DPS. I chose Hex for dungeons, Stoneclaw for helping to mitigate damage and I was considering either Totemic Recall, which I think would work well solo or in dungeons, or Ghost Wolf, which would just be nice for any situation that might require running (given we'll have instant-cast Ghost Wolf and it can be used indoors).

EDIT:

So UI changes... we'll get a built-in spellalert... does it alert for enemy casters?

Is it going to be as cheese-tastic as the built-in damage numbers?

The alert only alerts you to your own procs such as Maelstrom Weapon (x5).

EDIT 2:

Woops, I forgot the Healing Stream Totem major glyph... that one is actually really nice, and I'll probably use that instead.

Can anyone in IT explain WHY it takes so long...they gave themselves 12 hours to do it. Everytime they need to patch, it takes an entire day. Is it the sheer amount of servers or the size of the patch itself. And why can't they ever estimate correctly?

N/M...found out how big the operation is and I can only imagine it being bigger currently.

While it has seemed at times like it’s running on a old TRS-80, Blizzard is using some very cutting-edge equipment to keep us entertained. Apparently, in order for you to be able to log in whenever you want, it takes roughly 20,000 computer systems, over a petabyte of storage, and over 4600 people. Using multiple data centers around the world, this works out to a total of 13,250 server blades, 75,000 CPU cores, and 112.5 terabytes of blade RAM. They even monitor the weather in the areas where the data centers are, just to ensure that the servers don’t go down in the middle of that Naxx raid.

I dunno. Maybe because they're applying a patch bigger than most GAMES while maintaining enough servers for 12 MILLION players. But that may not be it.

Because no matter what, everything in IT always takes longer than originally planned.

Hmm it appears Enh Shamans are supposed to regem all of our haste to Agility and reforge crit and haste to mastery... interesting.

EDIT:

Although one weird thing... when I was on my Warlock on the PTR, it showed him as being hit capped (for spells obviously) against a boss. He only had around +13.98% hit, so he wasn't capped on live without the buff (and .02% more, but who's counting?). I even removed my chestpiece that has hit and replaced it with a piece that has none and he was still listed as capped. But the Shaman posts I read kept pushing the high 17% spell hit number... does anyone know if the information on the character pane just wrong?

Grrrrrr!! I got home around 4:30pm. A little after that, I headed downstairs to start my update. Back and forth several times to check progress, after a few hours, I too found I didn't have enough hard drive space. Cleaned it up. Started again, and now it's 8pm. Still updating. Guess I'll have to wait til tomorrow to listen to the bitchin' in game. I personally am looking forward to a lot of the changes. The biggest being on my Hunter. Of late, I've been leveling my oldest toon, a 4.5 year old Warlock. Hit 75 this weekend. It's actually a joy playing her.

Haha, I forgot to get rid of RankWatch... that add-on kind of has no purpose now.

EDIT:

MalygosCP and Elkano's Buff Bars also appear to be broken... as in they just give constant errors. I got an error with Grid and the wowhead data collector, but that was only one a piece. Does anyone know a good buff add-on to use in place of EBB?
