Wow I like how you can really see the whole moon even though it's crescent. I've done that before but not to that extent. Pretty cool.

It's called earthshine, sunlight reflecting off of the earth illuminates the dark portion of the moon. Sometimes you can spot it with the naked eye but it's a lot easier to bring out with a camera. You just blow out the crescent and expose like you would for stars. It's fun to play around with.

Here's a larger 250mm example from 3 years ago. Maybe I should try it with the telescope some time..

Dammit Mike. I spent like a grand upgrading my glass over the last couple of months and even though I'm pretty jazzed about it, you've got me itching for an FX body in a bad way.

Anyway, here are a few snaps of a fawn I caught up on Whidbey Island today.

Mike I know you use Auto-ISO, but what are your constraints? I max mine at 2500, and change the minimum shutter based on my lens, but typically try and use 1/320....

I have no constraint; I set it to use "the highest you can pick."

If I screw up and have shutter at 1/500 and f/8 and it's dusk, then the camera will pick ISO 25,600 and I will get the shot.

With that said, the more I use a setup like that and the more shooting I'm doing, the more I'm thinking, "OK, I've got my 24-120 on, ergo I should never need more than 1/160" so I make sure to ride the SS to the ~ 1/focal length. As light goes down, maybe I'm also thinking about opening the aperture (depending on DOF).

These days, about the only time I manually set the ISO is if I'm shooting from a tripod.

Couple more that caught my eye, so many interesting and unique looking mountains:

Super moon! I find this lens is hard to focus just right though, I find it's a bit blurry but it's best I could do. I need to figure out a better tripod setup so it's not shaking all over the place as it would make it easier to do fine adjustments.

It's so bright the shadow could be mistaken for a street light or something:

Tonights super-moon presented a bit of an issue as it rose an hour after dusk - ergo, hard to get an exposure.

I ended up shooting up at Mission Peak - I'm shooting at sea level, Mission Peak is 2500 feet and maybe 2 miles away.

I ended up shooting this with my 200mm on FX with my 1.7 = 340mm.

I got a couple in the image who had hiked up to the top of Mission Peak that appear as small ants in the lower left.

Cypher, that is a gorgeous fall shot! Wow!

Cute baby, luv2liv! Are those real leaves, or some background?

Mike, that must rank as one of the best moon shots I've ever seen. What were your A/S/ISO?

Thanks for the compliment !
You should have seen the dozen ones I flubbed.
Not sure why it says -4/3 compensation = maybe it thinks i'm 1 1/3 stop underexposed?
To be clear, this is a 100% crop from the source image.
