Today I slept in a little, and went for a long solo highway ride in the warmest part of the day: http://app.strava.com/rides/8907144

121 miles @ 18.4mph average
87% complete on my Strava distance challenge, with 189 miles left to go before May 31st

That was a good ride considering I winged it on two bowls of breakfast cereal and no lunch. I ate three energy bars, four energy gels, and four quarts of Gatorade throughout the ride (plus some water), but for a ride that long, a couple of PBJ sandwiches actually would've been great to have along :D

Took my 17 year old nephew out on his first organized bike tour, also his longest ride so far - 41 miles. He did really well. If he keeps up his training, I may be in trouble!

36 miles tonight. Pretty slow... it was threatening to rain, and eventually did start to sprinkle. Time for the wool sweater and tights. I also shot some video to answer some folks's questions on taillight performance, so in case anyone has an interest...

81 miles tonight @ 17.6mph average.

That puts me 95% complete on the mileage challenge, with 73 miles to go by May 31st. I'm doing a team 24-hour mountain-bike race on Saturday, so I'm debating whether to knock out the last 73 miles on the highway tomorrow, or rest tomorrow and race Sat/Sun and then finish up my final few miles next week. I should probably do the latter option, if only because I'll need those hours to get all my race stuff organized the night before the race.

So anyway, 81 miles plus 1 mile on the way to work puts us at...

1 mile to work, plus 19 after work to go register for my race tomorrow, so +20. I'm 54 miles away from completing my 1479-mile challenge, so if I race four laps Saturday/Sunday, that'll finish it :) Otherwise I'll wrap up the final miles next week.

Hope to work on the bike with the advice mech has given me, over the long weekend.

Four laps in the 24-hour mountain-bike race, for 57 miles. I blew away my own previous best on lap 2, then blew THAT away on lap 3. I'm still about 15 seconds off the course record on Strava, but for a 42-year-old has-been...? Not bad :D

That also finishes off my May distance challenge, with 1483 miles in 27 days (goal was 1479 in 31 days).

I do exactly 6 miles round trip for my commute. 6 + 6 for yesterday and today.

I had my mountain bike for more than 10 years and it's kinda heavy. I'm contemplating getting a lighter bike like the Trek FX series.

I've put 17 miles on my bike since I bought it.

As a side note: what do you use to keep track of your mileage? Phone, GPS? Any decent universal mounting brackets?

You can buy a bike odometer for less than 10 bucks on amazon.com and attach it to the handle bar.

Thought about that, but I really like they way the programs Endomondo, Strava, and SportsTracker, record stats. (any one have any personal preference?)

I like Strava a lot. I have a Garmin GPS; since I don't need map functions, I use the Edge 500 model, along with another company's heartrate sensor. One of my bikes also has the optional Garmin GSC10 sensor to read cadence (crank RPM, like a car's tachometer).

The Edge 500 has up to three customizable screens. For road rides, my primary screen shows speed, heart rate, cadence, distance and average speed.

26 yesterday, 26 today. Temps in the mid-90's both days so I've been getting out early and keeping them short.

I also use a Garmin Edge 500 with a HR monitor strap, but I use the Garmin online web tool. Strava is really nice, but I find the Garmin interface more suited to my basic needs.

FYI mech, Garmin released a new version of software for the 500 last week that adds 2 more pages and some other tweaks.

I do have quite a few friends who use mapmyride.com on their iPhone and android with pretty good results.

I usually post in the runner's thread, but I wanted to do something different. Got out my 1988 Specialized Rockhopper (the only original parts are the cantilever brakes). I had fitted 1.5" bald tires on it couple of years ago, but never rode it much. Did 24 miles today-average speed 16.5 mph (is that good?). I haven't biked that long for a long time. Cardiovascular wise was a piece of cake, but there are some muscles that are letting me know that they don't see regular use while running.

16.5mph is decent for a mountain bike. If you want to pick up a bit more speed, you can use a narrower hand position, particularly in a headwind or at higher speeds where air drag starts to stack up:

Obviously this puts your brakes out of reach, so use prudence.
