Standards can be good things...if used appropriately.

But..just how does an education department go about implementing grammar and language standards to its teachers...that is what I would like to see.

And, do these teachers get a chance to meet these new standards? maybe test into it? Or are they just handed a pink slip?

The story indicates they will be allowed to improve.

This works for me. You shouldn't be teaching if you cannot speak english clearly enough to be easily understood by a native english speaker. Teachers whose accents are so heavy that they are to difficult to understand, do not have a RIGHT to be teachers. Students however do have a RIGHT to be taught by someone who speaks the language fluently with good elocution. There is nothing more frustrating to me than to listen to someone whose accent is so bad that it doesn't sound like english when they speak. That is not the listeners fault. It is the speakers. The speaker has the responsibility of making themselves understood not the listener.

Only in America. The rest of the world deals easily with the accented because they have to every day. What a bunch of babies.

Dude both my parents are immigrants one is a retired university professor. Guess what they speak perfect English - constantly reminded us growing up of improper grammar and my mom won university professor of the year twice in California (a record). Don't give me this shit it's discriminatory. People are just lazy and have no standards today.

Too bad no one told you about punctuation.

Isn't the word English capitalized and someone is singular so wouldn't it be he or she instead of they? Also the speaker has the responsibility of making himself or herself understood. Just saying. Otherwise your words were completely incomprehensible as anybody who has an accent can tell you. One has no trouble all over the world, but come to insular America and all you hear is Huh? Huh? Huh? Huh? You poor sad babies have no idea how ridiculous you are.

No kidding. Americans have a disease called lazy ear and lack the standards to pay more attention. I can't tell you how often I've seen folk who won't watch English movies because they can't understand what is being said. We need to ban English teachers from teaching English. They have a fucking accent. And let's get rid of teachers with Southern accents because they sound like morons when they speak.

See Moonie, the reason why all those other people are called "the rest of the world" is because they aren't the USA. We're the brand name, the big kahuna. We do what we want, and the rest of the world does what it want's. In most of "the rest of the world" (those people we don't care about) you can throw a rock across two country's. They have to deal with accents because EVERYBODY has one.

I know this wouldn't be an issue if I knew how much I hate myself, but I haven't figured that out yet. I'm still stuck liking most people, and thinking that I'm a pretty good fellow. I may never outgrow this phase. Just yesterday I went flat out crazy and hired a guy that isn't white and has an accent, I don't know what the fuck is wrong with me, I just can't hate.

If these kids are going to work in the high tech field, they need to learn to understand heavily accented, grammatically incorrect English.

Where does it say that they will only remove heavily accented teachers?

From the bolded part it would appear that a teacher who speaks ebonic would also be removed.

Teachers that Speak "Ebonic" should be removed as that is not a language ( or anything close to one). Can you say gibberish.

funnily enough, I have an easier time understanding my colleagues in Asia than my colleagues in England... but 99.9% of our communication is written anyways.

like that article wasn't meant to be polarizing?? this is not new news, it has been talked about locally here for a bit w/ no protests, nothing. you guys are slow on this one :D

and no, az doesn't want to be white, it won't be white, we have a large hispanic population and also native american, no problems, but in the schools regardless of color, you need to speak understandable english.

would you like to be taught from a person that you can not understand?

I too thought this had to be an Onion article, I am disappoint that it's not.

Anyone Defending this is deluding themselves at this point. Anyone thinking that the recent Immigration Law was/is just dealing with Illegals after this is also Deluding themselves. What's going on in Arizona is far deeper than just wanting US Citizens/Legal Immigrants and no Illegals. This is now becoming an issue of Cultural Superiority and a Fear of other Cultures. I suspect there will be more Laws/Actions along the same vein.

How many of you are Anti-Big Government, yet support this?

As an English speaker I can quite definitely assure you that the rest of the world is that part of the world you aren't in. The rest of the world includes the US when you are in, oh, say England. And my point is that because 'they' have to deal with accents because everybody has one, was just the point I was making. They do so by paying attention and listening carefully. They bring something to the table instead of that American entitlement feeling that everything has to be easy and how they like it. Any you hate plenty, but you don't know what you feel. Even the notion that you hate your self galls you because you needed to bring it up.

being in bc you just get a nice view of the situation. i believe in your country illegal immigration is taken care of through the healtcare system? no id, probably no healthcare and deported? shouldn't throw stones when you live in a glass house lib. your thoughts are just like mexico's - look at their immigrant situation/laws and you will see the US is, even now (even though it is just a old fed law being enforced) is much more lax than mexico's. but i doubt you have read the AZ law let alone the Mexican ones.

the teacher situation isn't about any particular accent, basically all. in your opinion it is ok to teach even though you can't speak the correct language in a manner in which people can understand you?

i believe AZ is also in the process of not making biz give info out in languages other than english - i am sure you will have a problem w/ that too

I had a Professor in my college days in an environmental geology class that had such a thick eastern european accent that most of the technical nomenclature was gibberish. I avoided any of his classes thereafter. If you can't understand what the instructor is saying, then how the hell can you be expected to learn from them?
