Best money I ever spent. I joined my 3rd year of college so I already had plenty of friends but wanted something new. I also had the connections to get the job I have today because of my frat.

OP, don't worry about the idiots pulling out the old 'buy your friends' type cliches. Who cares.

How can you knock something you know little about?

EDIT: to note, many guys in my house my house were guys that thought that they wouldn't join a fraternity going into college. Note I say fraternity and not frat. A frat is something from Animal House.

I'm going to quote someone that I think that has more wisdom and clarity than me

A fraternity is an association of men, selected in their college days by a democratic process, because of their adherence to common ideals and aspirations. Out of their association arises a personal relationship which makes them unselfishly seek to advance one another in the arts of life and to add to the formal instruction of the college curriculum, the culture, and the character which men acquire by contact with great personalities, or when admitted to partnership in great traditions.A fraternity too is of such character that after men have left college they delight to renew their own youth by continued association with it and to bring their richest experiences back to the younger generation in part payment of the debt which they feel themselves to owe to the fraternity for what is gave them in their formative years. Newton D. Baker (Johns Hopkins 1892)

Newton D. Baker was Secretary of War from 1916-1921.

Very good point, my friend always gives me these BS reasons about former members from ages ago. Yet he's basically become a loser, his grades have gone to sh!t, he hangs out with valueless morons, and is hardly seen sober... yea, i'm sure that's the same experience that Hopkins was cherishing.

Yeah, you people who worry about the word frat need to get a life. I call it frat all the time- it's a quicker way than saying fraternity. Now the rushees have been told to call them "chapters." Oops, I mean Potential New Members. The pledges before didn't seem to mind. Oh wait, I mean "New Members." Even though the pledges AREN'T new members, they're pledging to BECOME new members. PC people need to get a life.

Are you really that fvcking dense? *Psst - here's a bit of a secret - you're on the internet RIGHT NOW! ZOMG!*

Oh dear lord. You really are a stuck up douchebag troll, aren't you? You really like keeping to your ways, don't you? You should change your name to "trollslinger."

Let me explain it to you. Insulting people on the internet, and going out of one's way to ridicule an idea or a person is commonplace on the internet. This doesn't necessarily correlate to real life. People love to vent and insult people on the net, some even take it as a sport. Most of the time this does not carry over into their real life, since they see the net of a place to vent and act out of character. Seems pretty simple to me.

And yeah, I got the point.
Nope, looks like once again you didn't get the "point." Plus you had a nice little hissy-fit over it as well. Nice touch!

Let me break it down for you:

1) You make useless, insulting posts about people doing things you don't care about - ON THE INTERNET.
2) Someone makes a useless, insulting post about something you seem to care about - ON THE INTERNET.
3) You call them out for it, saying that it's wrong to do so.
4) You get called out, saying you do the same thing.
5) You declare this to be "The Internet, not real life."
6) A soft flutter is heard as the entire point lazily drifts over your head.
7) You throw the temper tantrum of a troglodytic 3-year-old crack baby.
8) Everyone with an IQ over 85 continues to shake their head and laugh at you.
9) The end.

I love that story. :lips:

Fraternities are dropping left and right here at Maryland.

Beta got completely kicked out of the university and SAM lost their house over the past few months. SAE got completely kicked off campus a few years ago.

fvck frats, is basically what I have to say. as an entering freshman, I am pretty much vowing to stay away from frats as it seems the big frats and sororities are nothing but highschool v2. the drama of highschool is still there, alive and strong... and thats what I want to get away from in college.

How do you know so much about frats and alleged drama when you haven't yet set foot on campus?

Regardless, he's right.

I had similar views entering school as a freshman, and they were quickly changed after I got to know members of the fraternity I ended up joining (Lambda Phi Epsilon). Pledging for LFE definitely was one of the better decisions of my college career.

There are stereotypical greeks, and then there are greeks who would floor you with their selflessness and productivity. As others have said, it's all just what you make of it.

Wow, I read these forums every couple weeks whenever I'm really bored at work and the off topics have always been my favorite since they're a good source of entertainment. I didn't read much of this thread, but I joined a fraternity in college and it was the best thing I did, I can't imagine going through college w/o joining one. I'm alumni now and I still keep in touch and live with my fraternity bros, so saying buying your friends is bullshit. You may be in the same fraternity, but it doesn't mean you're all immediate friends, friendship is earned just like everything in life.

Anyways, I quoted this post because I'm a Lambda too ( Epsilon chapter ). Just thought it was random and warranted a post to see another Lambda on some random forum on the internet.

Peace all.

at Arizona State i'd say about 65% of frat guys are douchebags. Sorta decent guys on the outside, but a beer in them and there's no one more annoying or obnoxious.
