I have had enough of my brother-in-law's slip me the pinky that I feel like an honorary Sigma Chi.

(yes, I am aware how dirty it sounds, but it's a handshake thing...)

Is this another one of your jokes?
No, it's just that whenever I hang out at a gathering of his college buddies, they try to give me the secret handshake.

I bet they do

Really don't keep in touch with many of them now that I am out of college. Had alot of fun in college though.

Same here. Especially since I moved 5000miles away for a while, at least now I'm back on the same continent.

Almost went to the Grand Arch Council this year though, just didn't have the time.

No! It's too much of a hassel.
I dislike haze.
I don't want to buy friends.
I don't want to go through rush or drink loads of beer and become unaware.
I don't like to be forced to do something in order to fit in.

But! If money wasn't an issue, I would join one.

Alpha Phi Omega... only a service fraternity, but we had the most greek-like chapter in the region.
*sigh* it went downhill so rapidly after I graduated.

Anyone not familiar with Alpha Phi Omega - we did service projects to help out others in the community, etc.
It's a CO-ED fraternity. Service projects were generally followed by closed parties. Regional conferences were well attended.
Examples: spent a weekend with another chapter at a Franciscan monk retreat... fortunately, we remembered to bring enough alcohol for both chapters. The other chapter (alpha alpha beta, in case any of you know the chapters) ended up quite corrupted :p We rapidly taught them that you can be a service fraternity and still have some awesome parties.

But, belonging to any of the other greek frats on campus simply meant you were subsidizing beer for the freshman class (stupid idea) and any females who wanted to show up at your parties (good idea). Since their parties generally involved 20 or more kegs, it was a waste of money.

However, whether you belong to a frat or not really depends a lot on the particular campus. There are schools where only a small minority of students belong to frats, and other schools were a significant proportion of members are greeks.

The only reason I even thought about fraternity was to get a room in a cool old-style mansion instead of a cookie-cutter dorm room.

I spent a summer in one and decided I had better things to do than drink and cheat my way through college, and make myself look like an ass at every party.

And although the Greeks at my school were mostly cheats and drunks, they were perhaps the most sociable and charitable folks (with regards to raising money for good causes and volunteering) on campus-- so I have to commend them for that.

Frats: some good guys, some complete and total douches. What percentage decides the reputation of the frat. At my school: ZBT's are about 90% douche. Kappa Sigmas are about 25% douche. Sigma Alpha Epsilons are about 35% douche.

At the very least, even in the lower percentage douche ones, anyone who tries to have fun without drinking is pressured into drinking and/or made fun of. I sure do wish I could pay to have friends who didn't care about my well-being or personal choices.

And to the one guy saying frats "work" for some people. What do they do? You meet people and party. Can't you do that without being in a frat?

I can honestly say I know frat brothers who are like that: brothers. True friends. But a lot of what I see is not brotherhood but fake friendships between 2 people that don't relaly care about each other.

That was me. I agree with what you are saying. Unforchunately there are a lot of douchebags out there in frats, that ruin the image for the rest of them. A lot of the philanthropies and community service, as well as things frats and sororities do for the community.

Yep and people who don't like drinking aren't in frats. No surprise there. As I said, it isn't for everyone. Just like constant partying and drinking isn't for everyone. Aren't there plenty of "fake" friendships in the real world as well?

Uh.. kinda like 90% of every post in ATOT, including some of yours - made today?

So, Blazin, if you don't like deep fried snickers, and it doesn't affect you, why go out of your way to flame those that did eat one? :D

Now, take my hand and kindly climb down off that high horse of yours.

No I dont have to buy my friends, I can meet them on WoW just fine.

I love when people say things like this. Just to confirm, you have never:

1) chipped in with friends to buy a keg/12 pack/bottle of alcohol
2) chipped in with roomates to buy a piece of furniture or food
3) given someone some money to cover gas who gave you a ride somewhere

??

How is pooling money to pay for rent/food/parties buying friends when fraternities/sororities do it but ok when anyone else does it?

you have to pay just to start pledging. i know that covers their costs, but some of them are like $500+! i'm sure its warranted given how much they do, but at the same time, you *have* to pay and then suck up to a bunch of frat/sorority people just so you don't get kicked out of pledging. pretty weak IMO. friendship is earned, but not in the manner of "i want to get into your club so i'm going to suck up" earning

Alpha Epsilon Pi here. I went to a tech school, so we're all nerds to some degree. Also, at my school, there aren't many of our (*ahem*) people attending. Finally, a cousin of mine was already a brother, so he's the one who brought me over there. I wouldn't have rushed had I been left on my own. Also, it is policy not to haze, and I would not have tolerated anything less (which is not to say that there aren't some things you have to do that you otherwise might not do---I personally wouldn't label those things "hazing" per se).

fvck frats, is basically what I have to say. as an entering freshman, I am pretty much vowing to stay away from frats as it seems the big frats and sororities are nothing but highschool v2. the drama of highschool is still there, alive and strong... and thats what I want to get away from in college.
