say what?
school hasn't even started and I am not on the campus yet... so if this 'bid' is in reference to a request to try and join.. then um... yea how could I even get one if I am not around yet.
any 'bid' to get me into a frat will be shot down immediately. i'll have my rotc 'mates to call brothers, don't need some drama-filled organization to call my own. and I sure as hell won't need to belong to a frat to party, 'cuz at Ohio State there is plenty of partying around campus.

In community college I joined Lamda Lamda Lamda I'm pretty sure we were an unofficial chapter ;). In grade school I created Tau Iota Tau Sigma. Frats are nice and all I guess, I just never really got in to it.

My Brother! ESPONDA!!!

My father and brother were AEPi. I started the chapter at my school, since they did not have one there at the time.

For those of you who hate Greeks, like anything else, your time in a fraternity or sorority is what you make of it.

It is too bad that many people do not know of or refuse to see the good that Greeks give to the community and to each other. It is not all about getting drunk (no matter what you might think you know).

i know its not all about partying and that greek organizations have good sides... but I don't like the drama wrapped up around it. its like highschool popularity clicks all over again, arrogant a$$holes and whatnot. i hated that crowd at my school. i've always been the one that people knew, but I tended not to associate beyond simple chats with the 'popular' crowd. hell i never had a crowd. thats what I hated most about highschool and want to stay away from at college, having labels and sticking to certain crowds.

There are certain chapters that are like that. Thankfully, not mine. That's why you need to find the chapter that is right for you, if there is one, through the rush process and doing some research.

We all get labeled, Greeks just like showing their labels on their sweatshirts and beer steins ;)

How do you know so much about frats and alleged drama when you haven't yet set foot on campus?

Excactly, you sure sound like the expert on the topic!

Fraternities are Philanthropies. Ronald Reagan was a member of TKE, now TKE's raise $$$ for the Alzheimers Foundation. Every fraternity raise $$$ for different causes, you just have to look a little deeper than all the TV shows & movies that you base your negative opinions on. TV never shows the guys doing roadside trash pickup, volunteering at the foodbank or etc., carwashes, mentoring and so on.

As for the beer drinking - get 50 of your best friends in one room, what the heck would you do? Party! and the women just follow.

I voted no because I believe the poll was intended to be about Fraternities and Sororities in the college sense. Although I am a member of the Masonic Lodge which is considered a Fraternal organization.

Very true. Those are quite massive generalizations to make about a variety of different organizations when you haven't yet even gotten to campus. I had similar views entering school as a freshman, and they were quickly changed after I got to know members of the fraternity I ended up joining (Lambda Phi Epsilon). Pledging for LFE definitely was one of the better decisions of my college career.

There are stereotypical greeks, and then there are greeks who would floor you with their selflessness and productivity. As others have said, it's all just what you make of it.

*sigh* it went downhill so rapidly after I graduated.

Anyone not familiar with Alpha Phi Omega - we did service projects to help out others in the community, etc.
It's a CO-ED fraternity. Service projects were generally followed by closed parties. Regional conferences were well attended.
Examples: spent a weekend with another chapter at a Franciscan monk retreat... fortunately, we remembered to bring enough alcohol for both chapters. The other chapter (alpha alpha beta, in case any of you know the chapters) ended up quite corrupted :p We rapidly taught them that you can be a service fraternity and still have some awesome parties.

But, belonging to any of the other greek frats on campus simply meant you were subsidizing beer for the freshman class (stupid idea) and any females who wanted to show up at your parties (good idea). Since their parties generally involved 20 or more kegs, it was a waste of money.

However, whether you belong to a frat or not really depends a lot on the particular campus. There are schools where only a small minority of students belong to frats, and other schools were a significant proportion of members are greeks.

Hey hey! APhiO! =)

I'm in Alpha Phi Omega also. I was a service whore last semester, doing 107 hours total, which was the top count in our chapter for the semester...

So I'm wondering basically about APhiO and drinking. I'm guessing it's our region, but the rest of the nation drinks? APhiO is dry in our region, and so we don't throw parties. Everytime we do, it has to be on our own time, and not an APhiO event. Even then, we get a lot of b!tching from our advisor and officers when there's a huge party that goes out of countrol.

I stayed away from that in college, although I did give 'em a fair chance, but they're not really my particular brand of vodka. But hell, if they work for you, don't let ME stop you. :D

I also think it's worth noting that in my experience, frats tend to be more populated with future Republicans of America types than your average group of young people, so ATOTers might want to look into that ;)

So, Blazin, if you don't like deep fried snickers, and it doesn't affect you, why go out of your way to flame those that did eat one? :D

Now, take my hand and kindly climb down off that high horse of yours.
