The answer to this question has evolved into what resolution you are running.
1080p / 1440p / 4k

So that range can be quite big... and very big at that.

$400 - $500

RTX 3050 is priced below that and would be considered high end for 1080p, while the 3060 is for 1440p.
So no.... you need to look at the resolution in your pricing.

While the other extreme, at 4k midtier starts at a 3070 which is way more then 500 dollars.

Price has never been a viable way to describe the various ranges of cards, because it goes up with every generation.

It more shifts with every (refresh rate / resolution) evolution.
Which is why i said we need to look at resolution and refresh rate your asking for that for.

A Honda Accord is a "Mid" Tier for most people, but then you got Benz and BMW saying its the 5 series / E class.

IMO, mid range is dictated by what the average person is willing or able to pay for what is essentially a computer toy for playing video games, and that's around 2-$300. I think for most people, the traditional pricing structure still holds. It's just that Nvidia has capitalized on the willingness of the insane to pay 4X what a high-end card used to cost. It's easy to spend money that isn't yours, and they know that.

I mean, a "real gaming PC" has SO much MORE functionality than a console, when it comes to non-gaming tasks, but a console for strictly gaming? Not a bad idea.

Also, when you can get an Aya Neo hand-held Steam-deck clone for $300 to play Steam games locally... why have a PC again? I mean, primarily for gaming.

Consoles have always been cheaper than a PC. Nothing has changed here. In the early 2000's, a GPU was the same price as a PlayStation 2. Yet tons of people still bought GPUs.

So as long as a console is still cheaper than a PC everything is fine? Here's to hoping the 4070 comes in at $1500. They'd probably still sell out anyway. I'm telling you man, remove credit cards as a purchase option and global sales of GPUs would drop by 90%.

For me it is all about price/performance. I expect next generation to be very fast, so for me to buy one of current gen right now, the price would be at least 40-50% lower. Otherwise I'll just wait and see what happens.

I think $800 would be about right, for either that or the 3080 12GB, which are very similar in performance. They both benefit from the 384 bit memory bus, but the extra cores on the 3080Ti don't make much difference to my understanding. AT deals posted a 3080 12GB on newegg for $799, but I think it may still be back ordered. IDK what is going on with that, but the price is about right if it were available.

It's funny, there are already people fire selling 3070 and 3070 Ti cards in Kansas City. I picked up a Gigabyte 3070 Ti for $550 a couple of days ago. Found an open box 3060 Ti at Micro Center for $430 after taxes for a buddy too recently. I think there's a lot of open box items at Micro Center due to buyer's remorse. I figure some folks are hoping the 4000 series will be cheap and plentiful. I hope that too.

For things to become valuable they typically need to start off rare (which usually means very expensive) or you need to keep them beyond how long any reasonable person would keep it. Yeah. Those are gems, no doubt. I had the Voodoo 3 3000 AGP. Had to sell it to upgrade to a Geforce 2 MX 400. Never got to try the Voodoo 4 or 5. Man, how I wished to get my hands on the Voodoo 5 6000!

$800 right now? Not a chance. The MSRP would have been OK at $800 and by now there should be big discounts and game bundles to clear inventory. I'd rather wait to see what $800 can get me from the 4000 series. I expect $800 to maybe buy an RTX 4060 with 3080 equivalent performance.

I had a Voodoo 5 5500 AGP back in the day. Traded it for a GeForce 2 Ultra, which was a good deal at the time.
