Are Apple/Android flame wars the new 3dfx/Nvidia?

I don't think so. I think it's just an extension of the Mac vs PC argument. As far back as I can remember anything Apple releases gets attacked.

People who don't like Mac will criticize Mac.
People who don't like PC will criticize PC.

PCs for the masses.
Mac for the elite. (or at least they think they are superior)

I always look at my requirements and how to best meet them. I loved my iphone, but eventually my requirements became unlocked phones I can use on any GSM carrier. Then google said "Nexus 4 is powerful and cheap". I now have a nexus 4.

Maybe it's just an internet thing but I've never had anyone push an Apple opinion to me in real life. Actually, the only time I've heard a real opinion on either one is an Android user trying to prove how much more superior the Android phone is over an iPhone.

Oh my god my brother is worse in real life than any person on the internet.

What's funny is like a month after a big debate with the rest of the family he sells his iphone and goes and buys a Galaxy S4 lol. He also eventually went back to PC's because he wants to game.

Since this thread lives, I'll give an intelligent opinion:

iOS is always going to have its dedicated users. Its what they are used to and they like it. They are happy with their purchase and that's that.

Android has a diverse base. Some have it because it was cheaper than an iPhone (mostly prepaid customers). Others have it because they wanted a bigger screen or more features than what an iPhone offers. Then there are the ones that like to hack and mod their phones and Android gives more options as far as that goes.

So basically you have people that are happy with having old technology and outdated hardware (iOS) and then you have everyone else.

No, phones are handhelds so these are simply a continuation of the epic PalmOS vs Windows Mobile flame wars of the early 00's.

All flame wars are dwarfed by the mothership: PS/Xbox.

Epic threads inundated with PS and Xbox fanboys screeching at each other are some of the best reads on the internet.

i dont know

AMD/Nvidia may be bigger

And those two pale in comparison with way older crap like Ford vs. Chevy, etc. Nothing new at all, just different corps. people are willing to sell their souls to in defense of said corp, which couldn't give a rat's ass about you while you toe their company line.

Why would you suggest Apple has old technology and outdated hardware? I think it is quite obvious by now that Apple's stated goal is to minimize the hardware in order to maximize the experience. If my IPhone doesnt have 3gb ram and 4 cores, should I care if it runs all my apps flawlessly. If my phone doesn't have twice the pixel density than my eyes can perceive, should I care? I think Android device makers are in a rat race with each other to see who can print the most wiz-bang features on the side of the box, regardless of whether it's a well implemented feature, whereas apple is obviously playing a different game, and that seems to drive some Android users nuts.

Because they use old technology and outdated hardware.

NFC? Multi core processor? Are they even using an up to date bluetooth version? How many generations did ios have to wait through to get blue tooth? ios, is features and hardware are outdated.

I've noticed you are the one guy that has responded so far that appears to have a dog in the fight I mentioned, apparently in favor of Android , and are coincidentally the one guy who has a list of computer hardware and specs, tv's, routers, and even router firmwares in his sig. Perhaps we have established a bit of correlation here?

I enjoy products and services which perform up to the standards expected and are fairly priced. To me that doesn't mean being a 'fan boy' of a specific manufacture or name-brand. I am loyal to those products which meet my expectations and are fairly priced. You get what you pay for... but only up to a point, the very reason I do not choose to own or have an Iphone, they're simply not worth it in regards for what you get vs what you paid for it.

Oh come...its only $700 to get a 4" screen and 8mp camera. Thats awesome!

Bwahwhwhahaha and now all these iPhone users without expandable storage can't download iOS 7 unless they delete all their shit!

They're behind in some technical aspects because they don't release anything until it works according to their standards. Android manufacturers seem to release a ton of new features like someone throwing mud at a wall and then seeing what sticks. Apple releases new features like someone who has already figured out what will stick and then makes sure it does. You can usually count on apple releasing something that does what they say it does. You can count on android to release a lot of stuff that is buggy alongside some stuff that works. I'm no apple fanboy. My favorite tablet is the new nexus 7. I still see this clearly. If you don't it's because you aren't paying attention.

Lmao

That's a lie. Apple Maps?

Name one Android feature that sucked that bad. Hell...name one instance that proves your "throwing shit against the wall" theory.

Everything. Everything android does started out as a relatively poorly implemented idea and then some of it eventually evolved into something that worked well over time. Most of the stuff apple did worked as advertised when they released it. Apple maps would be an exception when compared to current google maps, except that google maps started out worse than current apple maps and evolved over time just like everything else google does. Google had a significant head start there. I'm not necessarily saying this is a bad thing for google. It might eventually win out if they keep at it. Apple has just consistently released a more finished product upon first release, and there's something to be said for that as well.

Again...name one instance in Android that proves your point

Early google voice was rudimentary compared to Siri. I know google caught up eventually, but Siri ended up setting the bar. Apple didn't do anything with voice until it was clearly a working product. Google threw out an early version that wasn't any good until it was challenged by Siri.

Google Voice is not Siri. Google voice is a voicemail/2nd phone number/etc.

Siri and the likes is a fun thing but I find it annoying personally.

You're right. What I'm calling google voice is really "google search through voice" or general android voice recognition capability. The real "google voice" is awesome and has no match from apple that I know of.
