Are Apple/Android flame wars the new 3dfx/Nvidia?

You young people probably have no idea what I'm talking about, but I've been reading the Apple 5s reviews today, and the comment sections give me a chuckle. People arguing back and forth over which is better, who did what first, who has the best specs or the specs that actually matter, and whether the reviewer is paid by whichever side. Reminds me of the good ol' days during the heyday of 3dfx, right after Nvidia came along and all the nerds retreated to their camps and drew their battle lines. The difference now is it seems not alot of iphone owners seem to be engaged in the debate, so the comments are just android fans shouting into an echo chamber. What do you guys think is the psychology behind this that makes people care so much? Is it an anti-conformity zeal or something? Is it some innate human desire to form clans and groups, no matter how mundane the common draw is? Is Android the redoubt of former computer nerds who used to be downright insulted if someone owned a computer and didnt know or care what kind of processor it had? I used to be that computer nerd, but then I grew up and had more important things to worry about.

I don't think so. I think it's just an extension of the Mac vs PC argument. As far back as I can remember anything Apple releases gets attacked.

I think the shame in it all is with 3dfx/nvidia both used the same technologies but engineered better ways of implementation...

At that point it wasn't who offered the prettier product, and the prices were pretty much comparable. Now its like a silly status symbol of apple charging infinitely more for a similar product and people buy it in order to be part of the "Mac" crowd. Sad really, I applaud Apple's marketing strategy and yes they've made Billions - but they're not fooling me. Not at these price points anyways, especially the sad excuse that is the IPhone 5c.

All flame wars are dwarfed by the mothership: PS/Xbox.

Epic threads inundated with PS and Xbox fanboys screeching at each other are some of the best reads on the internet.

Yes but there's a special place in everyone's heart to attack Apple. My first computer was a MacPlus and everyone was like "Why no PC". Then of course they used my computer and wanted one. That trend has continued, mostly, until this day. Apple is a drug for many for some reason.

I've noticed you are the one guy that has responded so far that appears to have a dog in the fight I mentioned, apparently in favor of Android , and are coincidentally the one guy who has a list of computer hardware and specs, tv's, routers, and even router firmwares in his sig. Perhaps we have established a bit of correlation here?

Use what you like and what interests you, the need to force everyone to follow your mantra strays a bit too far into the almost religious dogma side of things for my taste.

In my opinion, they're completely different things and meant for different users entirely.

i take it you never go into the video card forum

Correct. My video card is like 3 years old, and even worse I cant remember what the name of the chipset is, though it still plays the games I want it do. I'd probably be prescribed suicide if I were to visit.

Not the same. Video cards plug into the same port and run the same apps. Smartphones are more personal preference, they run different OSes. I agree with Anand that a lot of people don't cross-shop Android and iOS.

Maybe it's because every time an apple user posts they can't help but point out how superior apple products are and that if only everyone tried them we would all see how superior they are?

Maybe it's just an internet thing but I've never had anyone push an Apple opinion to me in real life. Actually, the only time I've heard a real opinion on either one is an Android user trying to prove how much more superior the Android phone is over an iPhone.

I personally come across 10x as many rabid android fanboys as apple fanboys, I use an old iPhone 4 and really don't care either way. It's just a fucking phone, and as far as tablets goes I'd rather have a win 8 tablet.

the whole android vs iOS thing is just the uninformed masses (who thinks they're experts) fighting over which brand provides them with the best yoloing swaggot device.

I haven't been excited about a phone since the S4/HTC One release. There has been tons of cool stuff since then. The 5c/5s, Note III, Moto X, etc.
I'm not totally sure if I'll ever get excited about a phone again.

They all are just stupid fast for everyday apps and general responsiveness.
And none of them have exclusive features that make me clamor for something else.
