Also, this whole discussion is incredibly stupid given the "Use Cellular Data" setting.
Not only that, there is an option to disable Data Roaming.

Still not covering it, sorry. All I'm looking for is a statement that Apple can force you to acquire items in your itunes account without your consent. Should I just keep asking?
Keep asking, but if the terms of service and the picture of the software that says "Automatically download new purchases (including free) made on other devices." isn't enough for you then you are hopeless and I'm done trying to answer.
You realize that to acquire free content on itunes you still have to elect to acquire it, right?
I'm asking a very simple question.
Actually, as evidence of the U2 album, you don't.
Which brings up the question, can you gift albums on iTunes? And if so, if I were to gift you an album and you had automatic downloads elected, would you get a download without "consenting"? Sounds like you're just trying to rules lawyer your way into an Apple hate party.
Is your argument that by enabling automatic downloads Apple can place whatever it wants on your phone at any time? Child porn? Missile secrets? If so, this is a rather extraordinary power that's been granted.
Oh god I just realized that my PC has automatic updates enabled, I hope Microsoft hasn't decided to start using my home computer as a storage server, as apparently that's within their rights.

You did, when you accepted automatic downloads. App updates work the same way. You elected to acquire them when you selected automatic updates.

The delivery mechanism amounts to nothing more than spam with forced downloads, and nothing less than a completely indefensible expansion by Apple beyond its operational purview... It has, demonstrably, no competence in the sort of social and cultural thought that should have gone into a well-orchestrated version of this same gimmick, like, say, a free album as a birthday gift. It also certainly has no business forcing files of any sort onto my computer without my permission.
For the people out there who have no interest in checking us out, look at it this way the blood, sweat and tears of some Irish guys are in your junk mail, says Bono, missing the point in a letter on the bands web site. Nope! Not in the junk mail, but instead in a position of unwarranted prominence on the expensive device I use to organize and execute almost everything of importance in my life, including work, friends, communication, and especially music.
Forcible dissemination of a trinket that statistics suggest is useless to 498 million of the 500 million people who received it is a simple demonstration of privilege: U2 is among the few bands with the grandfathered-in industry connections to get accomplish something so absurdand have Apple pay a nominal fee for each copy, no less. Apple, in turn, can leverage an uninterested and unwitting audience that is unlikely to do much about the transgression, given that it has no real recourse nor alternative.
Meaningful power has by now largely disappeared from the music industry...
No, it means at some point he had to purchase/install the app from itunes.
And it was automatically downloaded if he had that setting selected. Download is separate from install, don't conflate the two.

This "outrage" is perhaps the most "1st world problem" I've ever seen.Seems pretty self explanatory. If you've selected content to be auto downloaded, it will be auto downloaded. That means anything that Apple wants to consider content as well, such as app updates, or in this case a free album.
Perhaps a picture will work better?

Whatever helps you sleep at night.
In past, everything free I'd had to redeem. Until now, nothing free has just been given without user action. If you don't remember, pull up the christmas rewards apple did. This is the first instance of Apple auto-downloading music (shitty music at that) on to people's phones that I'm aware of.
Except mine. Because iOS8 was so busy hard-locking and requiring a force reboot that it forgot it was supposed to download some shitty music for me....
...because some people will potentially have gone over their data cap? I couldn't care less for me - I have unlimited data still. But for people with smaller capped plans, Apple is a bunch of tools for doing this to them. Before this incident I believed only songs I purchased and app updates below 100MB were automatic.
Because, see the language isn't "Automatically download new purchases made on other devices and new free items"
It's "Automatically download new purchases (including free)" - translated, that means you will download purchases whether they are free or not. PURCHASES. That implies user action.
The U2 case falls under the first statement - I did not purchase the U2 album for free. It was added to my library without my consent or any action on my part.
LOL, OK. Like I have trouble sleeping over what a bunch of dumb fuck Apple customers are whining about. Good one.![]()
Figure of speech ... anyway, you're apparently the only one that is unable to grasp the concept of people being upset at content showing up on their devices without having first "purchasing" it. Your semantics about the auto download feature are bullshit. If that were really the case then every piece of "free" content on itunes would be on the devices as well. It's not.
I grasp it just fine. I just find it utterly hilarious.
Keep thinking its just semantics and users electing to receive automatic downloads means something other than that.
It means they elected to receive automatic downloads of content they've "purchased". Where are all the free apps they haven't purchased on their devices?
