Not at all, I just wanted to trick him into admitting Windows 7 is just a glorified service pack for Vista. And he walked right into it :D
How did he "walk right into it"?

Here's how Microsoft versions their OS.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-u...y/ms724832(VS.85).aspx

Ans as far as service packs, I believe its versioned by the third number, e.g. 5.2.xxxx.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M...on_Number#Service_Pack

The leftmost digit, .x000, is the service pack release number (for example, 2.00.1239.2000 denotes Service Pack 2). By default service pack 2 will contain all of service pack 1. Microsoft documents all components of each service pack on their website http://support.microsoft.com

This convention has changed slightly with Windows Vista SP1. With Windows Vista the build string is shown as 6.0.6001.18063 with the last digit (x) of the 600x number representing the service pack (ex: 6001 = SP1, 6002 = SP2) and everything after as the exact build number.

Somewhat funny although XP has been a great OS for the vast majority of people who use it, myself included, so great i have no intention of getting 7 until it becomes free or i buy a new pc with it.
They'll stop throwing the toys out of their cot soon.

The excellent compatibility is a result of Windows 7 being a glorified service pack. But, hell, if I had the Vista name to live with, I'd do the same thing.

I was reading an article today that said that MS doesn't plan on seeing a ton of people migrate from XP to 7, but rather, that all new PC's will be shipping with 7.

I know I've seen adverts where there are comparisons or they throw in a competitor's name at the end, but nothing comes to mind where the focus is on devaluing the competition.

Yeah, politics... it's what they do.

Irrespective of Windows 7, this commercial is typical for Apple: trying to make Microsoft look bad, without mentioning a word about their own products.

Did they forget that Snow Leopard is still just a polished turd, and OSX was a major POS before Tiger, and the entire Macintosh OS has massively sucked hard for the last 25 years?

For every BSOD a Windows PC may have had, there were 10 of these.

Apple wants you to remember how bad Windows ME was, but they won't dare mention anything prior to their intel macs now.

This drunken rant was brought to you by Sam Adams

Christ, there is nothing new in this ad that Apple has not used since 2006.

Lame.

This thread is why I keep on coming back to ATOT.

A thread about a mac commercial has turned into semantics about windows 7 version numbers. Pure nerd gold.

Hey smartass, if you think Apple is so great how can you explain an entire genius bar full of retards making fun of my GF for her laptop problems by not listening to what she was saying and just saying "its impossible for that to happen under OSX" It took me having to go in there and threaten to take all of their names down and spam corporate till all of their asses were fired for them to actually look at the damn thing and figure out the logic board was toast.

Wow, it's pretty obvious that you haven't used Vista or Win7. It's a different OS. I guess if your definition of a SP includes XP being a SP of Win2k then it works but then you should use a different term.

Meh. I have leopard and xp on one machine and snow leopard and win 7 on the other. I was most comfortable in xp but after a month I prefer 7. Its stable and fast. I feel very confined when I use a mac os.

That being said I freakin hate the mac guy. I mean really hate. I find the PC guy funny and pleasant.

The commercials suck.

Win 7 is much peppier, like Server 2008. It's nice, I like it!

Read the Verizon Droid thread: http://forums.anandtech.com/me...id=38&threadid=2343317

There's even a funnier nerd fight between Chris and Codewiz arguing about Java.

Oh yeah, Ive been reading that one as well. Glad to see that someone else loves these fights as much as I do.
